Hi Bob, curious how did Ernie construct his exacta tickets was he keying , part wheels with a few horses or did he box it?

Exacta key boxes. He did some hedging. But basically he looked for overlays and keyed the overlay with a few horses in exacta boxes and hedged the bets.

Dornoch is the best 3 year old in this crop and he just proved it. The excuses for Mindframe and Sierra Leone are valid but they were beaten by a superior effort from Dornoch in the Belmont. Dornoch took on Sieze the Grey and ran him into submission and still had enough to look Mindframe in the eye and put him away. Dornoch was still running strongly at the end of the race and the gallop out shows that he clearly was not letting anyone pass him. It is going to take another effort or two just like it in the Haskell or Travers to get the respect he is due.

We'll see. Dornoch did get some lucky trips. For instance, in the Remsen last year, the track was very speed favoring and he wired the field. Then in the Fountain Of Youth, all of the good horses were scratched and he beat a very poor field. So basically he has won good effort, the Belmont.

Scrutiny of the elapsed times between calls makes me consider that the track was playing very much slower than the raw final times or Beyers. If so the horses that ran the hardest will need longer recoveries or may never be the same, and the runners who gave in to the difficulty thus reserving themselves may prove this whole day to be a multiple super key race day. A great day in all respects much waranting review. Thanks Bob.

Mindframe ran a Huge race - *BUT I believed in Dornoch when most "experts" didn't. Just b/c a horse doesn't fire in main prep race (Bluegrass) before the Derby and has a bad trip in the Derby, doesn't mean he can't regain his form back. Birdstone and Lemon Drop Kid are good examples. Had the Trifecta w/ DORNOCH. Dornoch showed fight and grit at the end holding off Mindframe.

I saw that. He seems like a nice guy. My knock on Dornoch coming into the Derby was twofold. 1). When he beat Sierra Leone by a nose in the Remsen, it was a speed-favoring muddy track, and 2). His win in the Fountain Of Youth was against a terrible field, he only beat 4 horses after several horses scratched out of the race. He set a slow pace and beat nothing. Then he ran out of the money in the Bluegrass and the Derby.

BOB, was the horse scratched when the race came of the Turf? or did it run in the slop ? I thought he ran on the slop and if so i assume we draw a line thru that race.

Yes, I should have mentioned that she ran, which was surprising considering her pedigree. She went off at 12-1 and didn't handle the slop at all.. The race is a throw-out for sure. I had my picks for DIRT in that race and picked 15-16 and it came out 16-15 and the exacta paid $44.20.

MD Was Closer to The Pace in Southwest & Derby and Won Both...The Race Between Then He Was Near The Back of The Pack in The Ark Derby and Came on For 3rd...Muth Was Also up Front in That Race...Really Not Sure How MD Will Perform But Perhaps He is Being Underrated

Yes he can certainly be forwardly place and he probably will in the Preakness because there's not much early speed. Mystic Dan is the morning line favorite and at anything lower than 2-1 odds, I'd say he's probably an underlay.

Good analysis Bob. I went with Sierra Leone, Forever Young, Honor Marie, Catching Freedom. They finished 2, 3, 8, and 4. I kept Forever Young, early pace horse, in the mix because of his consistency, and threw out Fierceness, another early pace horse, thinking that he would fold when challenged. Sierra Leone was a reluctant pick for the win because a come-from-behind horse has so much going against him in such a crowded field. But he closes like death and taxes, so I went with him. I try to visualize how the race will unfold, and then pick horses based on consistent effort, because this race is, above all, a gut check. Who knows? It’s a hard race to handicap. I completely overlooked the winner, Mystik Dan. I shouldn’t have. I liked his name…
