I’m watching this for the first time, almost exactly ten years on from the recital date. A fine performance, whether on disc or television, always makes me think of the story of W H ‘Billy’ Reed, accompanied by the composer, giving the first private performance of the piece. Wonderful treat indeed. 19:37

As i said i havent played in months. I think if i remember i was.having gripping problems with my bow hair. Im pretty sure that was it! So I quit playing trying to figure out what i was gonna do. Buy a new bow or clean one of my other bows and just be happy. Ive been watching bow makers on my.cell phone, so maybe thats whats holding me.back. because i know i was all gung ho about Peter Oistrach and his deep bass he gets with holding his violin up to his head. So i reached an impass. And yes your right its never linear. Your absolutly right! Your very wise Nicola. Thank you! Bye for now.c.e.usa 11 16 24 😮

Thank you for the vibrato tips Nicola. I like to warm up with Simon Fischer’s Warming up exercises.I find the best vibrato on very high notes comes when I don’t fully depress the strings. Also I like to do his trill exercises before the vibrato ones so that I have good control of the vibrato speed.

Great interview Nicola. I appreciated the way you quickly adapted your questions that matched the way Sheku expresses himself. Sign of an intuitive interviewer. I love the giddiness and appreciation you have for music and each other. ❤ Love his sweetness and humility.❤

Well you had me at Salute de Amore, I had wanted to play this just to satisfy you as my instructor, I waffles, had great difficulty disciplining myself to play it. Then I went on to play other things. Finally, month ago, you were playing Salute de Amore and it clicked, I was matching you on the first several bars and I was I heaven. I just copy chatted you and was pleasantly stunned. I am so greatful I mentally challenged myself to try and learn this song because I respect you and wanted to make you proud of me. I had some health problems recently and was not playing every day, as I had hoped. But your correct, learning the violin is not a linear progression. I apologize to you for not being consistent. I also have been pencil drawing and this is a great love of mine so I divide my time with art and violin.when get frustrated with one discipline I jump to the other to passing myself.. thank you for these precious videos Nicola! I'm so very greatful for you leaving them posted! . I learn so very slowly, there is no other way for me to learn violin, other than for me to copy cat everything you do. I have great difficulty understanding writer music. I remember being in the kitchen with the music stand my mother bought for me? And I soldered on with Go tell Aunt Rodey or what ever it was and the pressure from my mother was intense. I did not come from a musical background other than my dad played the harmonica and my mother had once played piano. It was my dad's dad that played ukele banjo, violin, and my two aunts who played piano but never bothered to encourage me on piano So my grandfather sent up a crated violin around 1970 approximatly.. I remember the beauty of its dark complexion and mystery. This was once my great grandfather's instrument and I now was it's custodian. Sorry to ramble on Nicola. I am at pleasant in an artwork phase, I hope to come back to the violin in a couple of weeks. I feel like I've let you down. I'm sorry. I have to have this time to create my drawings, I am both right hemisphere and left hemisphere, and right now I'm in an art phase. I will never forget the joy I felt when I copied you playing Salute De Amore! It was a wonderful feeling. Please excuse my wandering off for a while. Bye for now, yours very truly, c.e. usa sep. 19,2024 ❤

Hi! Nicola! Been busy with artwork, last time i played was about a month ago. At that time was working on the theme from The Avengers. I was amazed how well it sounded. Would have liked to have you in backup with harpsichord to balance. Have been down with health problems. Trying to find good reliable drinking water. Love to you,c.e. usa.❤

Your videos are just amazing! Informative, well explained and just really motivating. You're a brilliant teacher (and musician, obviously). I started learning the violin less than a year ago and instantly joined a folk orchestra so I can stress myself out. 😂 The other musicians have been incredibly helpful, and I'm now at a stage where I can (more or less) play a few songs but not the violin. I'm really enjoying learning some very necessary techniques with you, thank you. ❤

Hi Nicola! 8 28 24, from c.e. usa. This is a big step for me. I am faking Salute De Amore along with you. You had asked 45 minutes of us students. I am practically able only for about 15 min. I don't know why but I am relaxed today. I have quit drinking fluoridated, chlorinated water from the tap. This is big stuff for me. I thought I would never get around to Salute DE Amore. And with my health improvement I am doing opening bars of your syggested Salute De Amore. I'm gobsmacked. My intonation is there, I have been working on it from a tinkering point of view. It sounds wonderful, I'm dropping Sibelius for the moment and will try to pick up Salute De Amore! It' sounds sweet already so am hoping for good things from this. Your loyal slow poke c.e. usa ❤😅

Hi Nicky! 8 20 24. C.e.from usa. Worked on the visitors by abba. I skipped the vibrato exercise and focused on listening to the beat. My bow needs cleaning and inthe.cooler weather doesn't grab the strings as well. I'm blowing F# behind the bridge at D string so my intonation must be close! I think it sounds great! I'm amazed a student instrument sounds so mellow! I have of course modified my bridge. All for now.😅

A little while ago I ran through Wrap your arms around me by Agnetha Faltskog. I brought myself to rears with Once Burned Twice Shy, by her as well. My violin is moving me to tears now! In a sweet way. Thank you very much I think you have turned me into a violinist. I still have incredible stage freight, but at least I'm enjoying what comes out of my violin. Yours very truly c.e. usa,8 19 24 your humble student. Wonderful lesson bye for now.😢

Hi Nicky! From c.e. usa.8 18 24. This morning i played a delightful Strause Waltz. It was not note perfect but very convincing! Im using a special technique of a certain application to the strings. Im using D adarios Prelude, and at first they seemed awkward but after this special technique i am growing to love these steel core strings. I much prefer Evas though! Bye for now.😅

Dear Nicola, I can remember back to 4th grade when I was of the opinion that if I could learn vibrato then I could make up anything on the violin and it would sound good. My instructor held off vibrato instruction untill the entire class was ready to read music and had a repertoire of learned songs. I love these "747," double and triple stops you make. Your loyal student c.e. usa.Aug. 17,2024😅

Hi Nicola! It's c.e. from the states. I knocked back my bridge to 334mm and it seems to be working, I'm pretty well matching your tambour. ITS just my student instrument but seems well to emulate dare I say your Strad. Was wondering what the vibrating length was on your Strad, but am guessing somewhere near 334mm vibrating length. Great lesson I m amazed at what an inexpensive violin can do! I'm sounding like Dark Shadows now! It's kind of eery! But also kind of cool! I'm sure I must have had my great grandfathers violin off by a mile on bridge location. Wow! It's taken in excess of 40 years to finally figure that out! Bye for now. I'm starting to love my sound.😅

7 24 24 Hi Nicola. I have been down with bacterial infection in my right jaw, so have not played much over last several days. I picked the violin up a few minutes ago and ran through the vibrato exercises with you on vidio. Sounded pretty good. Yesterday I drew your hands on scraps of paper at the county library. Im anxious to resume lessons again. Brain has been on fog from bad tap water so Im on antibiotics and feeling a little better now. Well enough to get practicing again. Great lesson and I agree, more is not more! So i have been brief here with my lesson. Hope your in good health and enjoying summer! Bye for now. Your usa loyal, c.e.😅
