Across 3 weekends from 23-24 April, we will journey to different traditions led by guest artists incl. Aly Bain, Phil Cunningham and Jenna Reid (Scotland), The Ayoub Sisters (Egypt) & Timothy Chooi and Laure Chan (East Meets West).
What can I expect from The Global Sessions?
This year’s tune, written by accordionist Phil Cunningham, will be given its first outing played by Nicola Benedetti. It will then be passed round the musicians over 3 weeks. Each violinist along with colleagues will make it their own. They will change rhythms, twist notes, rewrite corners, add instrumentation and colours and effects - and along the way, teach us how they do it!
Technique, sound, rhythm and melody will be taught and explored, but these sessions have a deeper story to tell. We will embrace our similarities whilst celebrating our differences.
Everyone taking part can then choose as many versions of the tune as they wish to record and send us their playing. Your videos will be weaved together to create a unique final performance.
Who can take part?
Everyone is welcome - all ages, all levels.
Saturday Sessions are open to all as we discover more about the musicial traditions.
Sunday Sessions are for violinists and will focus on exploring and playing the new arrangements of the original tune.
Make sure to register your spot by the end of the day on 21 April to receive the information ahead of the first weekend.
