I am glad that Challenger locomotive UP 3977 was preserved for display, 3977 is one of 2 surviving Union Pacific rr "Challenger" locomotives with the other being the famous UP 3985. Challenger 3977 has a spectacular looking paint scheme which is described as the "two tone gray" scheme which debuted on the Union Pacific passenger train equipment back in 1946.

I was on the tour back in April 2015 and I've seen Preston Claytor doing the PowerPoint presentation during the tour. He is such a friendly fellow, and I didn't know he was the son of Bob Claytor who was responsible for 611's popularity. Too bad, Preston left the group due to his disagreement of having 611's "Spirit of Roanoke" moniker inscribed underneath its cab windows on both sides.

@@michaelhollingsworth9209 It might be because of the way in which they pull the cord at each crossing. It may sound a bit more "muffled" if blown at a lower level... ESPECIALLY with a Hancock Longbell 3-Chime. Just my guess...

Why did the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad train engineer blow the diesel train horn whistle to make sure nothing was in the Brush Tunnel from 8:08 to 8:18?

So let's assess. 734 is on hols because of the Mallet - 3609. When that is finished then 734 will be retubed, inspected and running again. Nice to have two machines. Is it not possible to protect 734 from the weather, Water never did any good outside a boiler. - A tent that gives ventilation around the engine, not a plastic cover to encourage condensation and make things worse. - Gofundme??? for financial help - you are a non profit. Wish I was there to help..

Honestly that was an amazing weekend. I photographed the 611 on Saturday at Thoroughfare Gap in the morning, went hiking right after with my uncle, and then came back down to photograph her on the way back to Manassas. Rode on Sunday afternoon. I hope the 611 gets to return one of these days!

One day 1551 can run excursions from the Age of Steam Roundhouse in Sugarcreek, Ohio to Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Florida, Tennessee, Upstate New York, Pennsylvania, Indiana, Maryland, West Virginia, New Jersey, Kentucky and Illinois. I saw 611 2 times, from Spencer to Manassas. I saw 765 4 times, I saw 630 in Spencer once and 4449 and 1225 in Owosso, Michigan in 2009. Great times I had in my life.
