Western Maryland Scenic Railroad

On Sunday, April 10th, 2016, Western Maryland Scenic Railroad's faithful steam locomotive, 2-8-0 Consolidation #734, affectionately known as Mountain Thunder, ran her final public trip before being taken out of service for her federally mandated "1472" inspection. Rail Joy Productions was there the entire day to capture all the action. As a bonus, I have included older scenes from fall foliage excursions done in 2012 throughout this video. They serve as a great tribute to the tourist draw the locomotive had over many years when the autumn leaves decorated the Allegheny Mountains. 734 also ran a couple extra times up the line for WMSR employees and familes in the late afternoon following the public excursion. It's sad to let go of the 734, but knowing that an articulated steam loco is being restored to operation is awsome.

Needs to undergo an inspection every 15 years. The inspection and overhaul lasts 1,472 days.

@@davidng2336 its every 1472 service days or 15 years of operation the locmotive must be inspected. It doesn’t always take 15 years. Depending on man hours and finance that is. :)

So it must have a full inspection. It is not going to the scrappers is it? Do the inspection and return it to service. What is all the doom and gloom. It has been 2 years simce this date. The engine should be back running again by this time.

We don't scrap steam locomotives anymore in the 21st century and 734 will be worked on hopefully to operational service again this fall or early 2020 once 1309 is completed in the next month or 2

its very likely that ls&i 34 (734) will be back in service after a statement by the WMSR that after all other projects are Finished that 734 will go under her 1472 day inspection and all repairs to the engine well be done. but it sitting outside for 5 years dose not help the situation

@@PABackyardRevivals One must ask why it was sitting outside for 5 years if it is so precious, so important, so valuable. Doesn't anyone understand that unprotected steel and machinery is destroyed by inaction, lack of use and just plain water, especially acidic rain? I don't understand all the circumstances but there are steps for preservation that can be taken and 4 years seems a long time for rehabilitation. Of course, there is always the problem of Money that rears it's ugly head but go fund me's usually raise plenty if the cause is right. Certainly someone could have provided shelter for it.

So let's assess. 734 is on hols because of the Mallet - 3609. When that is finished then 734 will be retubed, inspected and running again. Nice to have two machines. Is it not possible to protect 734 from the weather, Water never did any good outside a boiler. - A tent that gives ventilation around the engine, not a plastic cover to encourage condensation and make things worse. - Gofundme??? for financial help - you are a non profit. Wish I was there to help..

why would they scrap her, shes on static display. Steam doesn't get scrapped anymore, not with all the railfans to protect them.
