Having previously been a teacher makes sense. You probably spend more of your time teaching now than you did while you were required to fit the teaching around managing a classroom full of kids.

I love the single bowl sink, stainless steel. However w rounded corners. The sharp corners are a real chore to clean. A basket to ckean/drain veggies that just hangs from the sides of the sink, when needed, makes the sink fully functional.

Asking about pot fillers My answer is YES and a big yes, sometimes family members are around the sink and you need water … Or sometimes pot is getting too heavy and then boiling and of course won’t be heavy at the end of cooking process… And it’s so girlish material 😂

@MTKDofficial does the same "work area next to the sink" recommendation (36" wide * 24" deep) apply for a kitchen with a workstation sink? I've been wanting to get a long (45") workstation sink and we will have the 36" next to it, but I'm curious if you think the "workstation" components of the sink would count towards the total work area or not. maybe the increased utility doesn't cancel out the fact that a sink with a cutting board insert isn't a full countertop?

We're looking at the functionality of wall cabinets over the rangehood and adjacent bench space, and it looks like the perfect place for storing all the smaller saucepans and steamers and accessories that we use every day. They're not going to be affected by the bit of heat and steam that escapes the rangehood, and they're best stored as close as possible to where we use them - the stove. The problem is, by the time we put the rangehood 1.8m off finished floor level so as not to inconvenience the taller members of the household, those cupboards are out of my reach. What I need is an electric mechanism that will pop the cupboard doors open and then swing a pull-down insert down to bench height. Does such a thing exist?

The comparison between a television remote and an oven having remote control doesn't work. For a television, you bring your snacks, your drinks, your knitting, your favourite blanket, get yourself comfortable on the couch, and then hit play on the remote. For an oven, you're in the kitchen moving around as you prepare whatever dish you're putting in the oven, and even if you do need to pre-heat your oven, that's only a few minutes before you put things in it, and it's while you're moving around doing things in that space. Hit the button as you walk past - job done. You don't save anything by having a remote control on the oven - but the "smarter" it is, the more likely to brick itself so you can't use it at all.

A tap that provides sparkling water is going to do very nasty things to your indoor air quality. All that extra carbon dioxide! We need to be making carbonated drinks less normalised, not building them into our houses.

The optimal place for the sink waste pipe is at the back. End or middle doesn't make any difference to how much space it takes up, only the configuration of the storage underneath. But putting it at the back .. that actually gives you more space underneath!

Can you add tips on herb/spice storage? I think often people make the mistake of planning to store their spices and herbs next to their oven… But that residual heat will decorate the flavor and search considerably. Please advise your recommendations specifically for those of us who have a passion for cooking who have at least 50 different types of culinary herbs that we need at our fingertips, with great organization options.

Great video, issues well articulated. So thanks - appreciated. I'm in the process of deciding bench top and splashback options. I am receiving conflicting points of view on porcelain/sintered stone. Some installers are promoting it - partly due to the Australian decision (I live in New Zealand - neighbour), others I'm dealing with say don't go there due to chipping and warranty issues. Thanks once more.

Thanks. Appreciate the feedback! I do agree that sintered stone can chip easier than a natural or even a manufactured stone. However, it depends on the user. Personally it wouldn't worry me, but others who are rough with there kitchens may want to think about it.

I'm wondering about weight capacity of drawers. What r ur thoughts on lots of cast iron skillet storage? 7 qt dutch oven, commercial rated Kitchen Aid mixer, large food processor, big crock pot. I normally put them in the bottom of a cabinet or on a 3/4" plywood shelf. Will be designing new kitchen soon and don't want to tear up new drawers.

Most good quality rails have a 100lbs test per rail. That plus a minimum 5/8 drawer bottom and you should never have to worry. 3/4 is even better. Look to Blum for good rails.

At the point when you put "I don't like seeing the fridge and I want to hide it" ahead of the actual efficiency of "I don't want to waste time opening the door just for a cup of water and also I don't want all the cold air to fall out and waste a whole lot of electricity cooling my fridge contents again and meanwhile the storage life of everything in the fridge is shortened because the kids keep opening the door for another drink of cold water" you know you really need to reassess your priorities. The kitchen is first and foremost a work space. Making it look pretty is nice, but when form is prioritised over function you're on the wrong path. Personally I won't have a water dispenser on my fridge at all because tap temperature is healthier anyway, but if I wanted my fridge to dispense chilled water, the tap would be on the front for easy access. Or more likely, I'd have a separate water chiller.

My problem with this corner stuff is cleaning. Squeezing in to clean the back and right corners is contortionist territory and if you have bad knees or arthritis… The left corner is merely extremely difficult.

8:02 I think that's the best one I've come across yet. This would allow larger items to be stored there which would make them less likely to fall off. A food processor is going to be more stable than a can of tomato soup.

You do realize there's more to cooking than boiling water fast? (Aside from college dorm students making pasta every night...) There is no replacement for the feedback and control of gas. Plus the buzzing of induction, the touch controls being inoperable if you spill anything on it, and the auto shut-off when you tilt the pan to baste...

I think that corner fridge would be a nightmare. Things get lost in the back of a normal fridge. That would be a lot worse with those deep angled shelves. It would be a huge loss of money. Not only with the appliance itself but the amount of wasted food. Obviously I'm not a fan.

My corner cabinets LeMans is jam-packed with small appliances. I love it. However, everything is relative. My old corner cabinet had a flimsey lazy Susan, fallen off bits from previous owners (40 years worth) and mold. Felt sorry for the demo team. The contractor looked at building access from the dining room on the other side of the wall, but the kitchen side was part of a 16" bump out.

Man, I'm definitely closing up one end of my galley kitchen so I can put in two lazy susans, or magic corners, or one of each... maybe close up the other end as well so I can put in a lemans and corner fridge for good measure. Sure it will cost some money, but it's definitely worth it to make the exact same amount of stuff I have in my drawer banks and regular fridge more awkward to reach. Oh wait, about a month and a half too late for this comment, sorry, my bad.

I literally moved walls (in a European brick house, that's how bad I wanted it) so I could put in a long and narrow galley kitchen with no corner cabinets at all. My parents have an L-shaped kitchen, the corner was blocked off in the past, when they redid the kitchen they got convinced to get a LeMans corner... It's probably the second best system after the 'magic corner', but it still ended up holding not more than what was in the cabinet next to the blocked corner before... and it's actually not great to get things out from the bottom shelf since you have to reach all the way down to pull it out... and things that are tall and light do fall off in the back just like with a lazy susan.

Glass fronted cabinets aren't just for displaying pretty stuff. They're also there for people with poor object permanence, to remember what stuff we have in our cupboards. You can't use the tools you've forgotten you own, and it gets even worse when you decide you really need a particular tool and go out and buy it, only to get home and discover there are two in the cupboard already!

The key factor for placing any item in a kitchen is accessibility. Who is going to be using this item and how are they going to access it? And in a typical family home, the people who use the microwave most are going to be children and teens, heating a frozen snack after school or heating milk for a drink or whatever. Putting the microwave in a place where short humans need to either use a step-stool or else reach above their heads to access it is just asking for a nasty accident. Of course, if you have a person with any sort of disability in your family, they're the other cohort that use microwaves a lot. My late grandmother always used hers to heat water for a cup of tea. She could fill the cup with cold water from the tap and tell when it was the right amount full by having one finger inside the cup - something you can't do when you're pouring from a hot kettle! A dab of textured paint helped her locate the one-button preprogrammed setting that would bring her standard mug of water to the correct temperature for tea. And then as her arthritis got really bad, she wouldn't have been able to lift and pour the stovetop kettle safely even if she could have seen what she was doing. The microwave gave her independence in that most fundamental activity of a nice cup of tea. Put the microwave at a safe height for the people who are going to use it the most. And if someone 6'5" moves in and complains that it's too low, get them a chair and they can sit down to access the microwave safely.
