We rebuilt our kitchen off of all of your recommendations. My husband is in construction but kitchens are not his field. He researched with me and you were at the top of the KZbin lists. Keep up the great work

@@MTKDofficialI’m also the one that despised the old corner sink with a hate I could taste! Watching it getting tossed at the metal recycling was a very happy day. 😅

Met with you via Zoom this past April. Demolition started 9/11/24. As of today, 11/2/24, all but 2 upper cabinets are installed. The template for the counter top was made Thursday, hopefully will be installed in two weeks. Still to go: flooring, appliance installation (and yes, specific appliances selected BEFORE ordering the cabinets), under cabinet lighting and probably some things that my contractor knows to do that I don't. Good planning led to few surprises. I expected water damage, and surprisingly none. Termites, but after inspection limited to one small area. It could have been a lot worse. We contracted for a major electrical upgrade, but turns out we needed even more work in that area than expected. We're doing work in other areas of the house as well, so the whole project won't be done before US Thanksgiving, but knock on wood, I'll have a functioning if not quite complete kitchen before then. Thanks for your help and insight. Appreciated!

I love DIY and as you know I did significant work on my kitchen. But I had the pros do the plumbing, electrical and the countertop install. That gave me peace of mind for sure.

As a short person, accessibility is a big issue for me. My daughter-in-law can reach the top shelves in her kitchen, I cannot. In any kitchen renovation I need a storage space for a sturdy stool for reaching high places ☺ This is a basic accessible issue most people don't even think of. That's another good reason for having a designer - thinking about issues you wouldn't notice until the whole job is done. Having someone with experience ask the questions you don't know to ask. I wanted to move my stove over but it was pointed out to me that the electrical cord was not long enough and that the cost of moving that special outlet was far more than I expected. Thank you, Mark, for all your food for thought!

Mr Tobin I really like your down to earth approach to kitchen design. I took notes and followed several of your advices plus I shared them with friends. Thank you from Italy.

6:15 Regarding allowing 10 or 15% extra cash for unexpected happenings, is absolutely true. When the city inspector came to my kitchen remodel, he said the new code is there must be an electrical outlet every 4 feet of counter space ... and only x number of outlets can be on any single circuit breaker. Soooo, Had to add a circuit breaker to the panel, and the wiring to the kitchen to accommodate this requirement. Never would have _dreamed_ this was going to come up.

One comment about selecting appliances early. Yes, do it early, but NOT before the general design has been laid out. You need the specs for your fridge, cooktop, oven(s), etc., for the cabinet builder. But before the appliances are ever selected, you need to know which appliances to get. I made the huge mistake of walking into an appliance store and saying, hmmm, I'm going to need a double oven, a microwave, a fridge, a dishwasher, a cooktop, and I really want a steam oven so I'll get one of those too. Great! Now I have all my appliances and we can design from there. But WAIT! Guess what? Once I talked to my designer, she recommended an Advantium 5-in-1 oven for the second part of the "double" oven. She also recommended a Fisher & Paykel "double" dishwasher because I live alone and it takes forever for my full-size dishwasher to get full. Then she looked at the kitchen size and shape and recommended a drawer microwave instead of a built-in wall microwave, since I had plenty of room in my island for the microwave but nowhere to install it in a tower. The worst part was that the steam oven would not fit anywhere; it requires a mount into a tower, but the only tower that would fit in my kitchen already had a normal oven and an Advantium (neither of which I was willing to give up) so the steam oven had nowhere to go. Lastly, she mentioned that since my island was so big I could fit a drink fridge in there if I wanted, something I hadn't even thought of but I loved the idea. So basically, I spent a long time picking out and purchasing all the wrong appliances. Talk to your designer FIRST about what appliances you want and need, and where they will go, THEN pick them out.

I am a poster child for 'Don't DIY your kitchen'. Since April 2023, I've been using what I call a 'sawhorse kitchen', my man has the skills and the time, just not the will...and hiring someone is out of the question. I'm hoping 2025 brings me the rest of my cabinets, countertops and a kitchen sink.

Great video as always. Having to replace my central a/c this year and the cost of exterior painting being about 3 times higher than expected put kitchen remodeling plans on the back burner for a while so I can get my budgeting for it back on track! Hope to at least replace flooring and counter while painting cabinets, but I still am dreaming of remodeling with layout changes. Just not sure how far down the road that will need to be.

Don't hire your neighbor who is a contractor like I did. He was hired without looking at any work he did. My kitchen base cabinets are not level. He would come over hungover and there were times when he was obnoxious. We hired someone to finish because his wife sent him to rehab. My first only kitchen renovation did not go like I thought it would. The bathroom renovation went better because I had more hands on choosing materials and I found a good contractor thank goodness, after interviewing more than one and sticking to a dedicated budget. Live and learn.

For our current reno we did not account for the delay in receiving our custom wood hood. It took 4 weeks to get in. I wish we would have researched and ordered way sooner in our process.

Drawers are crumb catchers. We have cabinets with full extension pull out shelves. Problem solved, and the look is much cleaner and less costly to install.

If you go with a contractor, I recommend either poking around yourself, if you're comfortable, or shelling out for a third party inspection. Just because a contractor is "good" doesn't mean their workers are as attentive to detail as it's ideal.
