So weird I have nostalgia for this place because I live overseas but I have visited the Metro every time I went to the NE to see family , so in this odd way it feels like a part of my childhood even if the first time I stepped foot in here was in 2006 . I was totally depressed when I heard they closed Metroland , I loved that area of the mall , a full on amusement park inside , with a roller coaster , a giant swing , and bumper cars , who cares if I was an adult already , I just adore that type of stuff , especially in this environment . I also recall seeing the movie IT at the theater there , awesome memory for me . Then , another find memory from 2017 , perusing Toys R Us , the massive one outside the mall but still in the same complex , parking area , that was amazing honestly . It's so depressing that Metroland and Toys R Us no longer exist , they were moments in time I will never experience again . And every time I went and had these experiences I said it's not a problem, I'll see them again when I come back , I still regret not taking more video of Metroland , and if not taking any video of the inside of Toys r Us Anyways , this place is awesome , I hope to go back soon and it will always hold a special place in my heart

Forty years since I last walked those streets. Some of the people I walked with are no longer living, and all are gone from my life. Tears in my ageing eyes today.

Another of Washington villages claim to fame is the capture of the Highwayman, Robert Hazlett (or Hazlitt) who was caught whilst his horse was being re-shod at the local smithy, the building with the red tiled roof at 0:22 and again at 5:58, now converted into a restaurant. He was hanged at Durham on Tu. 18 September 1770 and his body hung on a Gibbet in chains at Wrekenton (Gateshead Fell)

It's sadly a shadow of its former self. Like so many malls around the western world, it's struggling. The big chains that used to anchor the centre, House of Fraser, Debenhams, Top Shop, BHS, Littlewoods, Woolworths - they've all gone bust. Part of me thinks that in ten years time it'll all be demolished and there'll be a housing estate there instead.

Not as small as you may think. Only really London, Birmingham, Manchester & Glasgow are bigger in terms of population, and Liverpool is of a similar size demographically. If you're talking about 'sprawl', Newcastle city boundaries' stretches for a good few miles from the banks of the Tyne. I used to call Newcastle a 'small' city too, but that's compared to London and so not really correct, given London's a megacity. Newcastle is the approximately fifth largest city in the UK in terms of size, so no more 'small' city.

You cannot hide the decline of the Metro Centre (pandemic filming aside) this place is devoid of buzz the shops are mainly low rent offerings great swathes of shops have closed for good never to return (and not all of that is due to the pandemic) it's being coasting downhill for a few years now . Just past the antiques village (lol ) no shops at all there used to be lots of little independents or small box stores there now non at all in that area (from about 4.11 onwards ) . There is a noticeable abscence of "community spaces" i.e seated areas for the convenience of the shoppers to sit a while the trees and foliage mostly all gone and the lack of benches to relax aaround the large shopping Mall are conspicuous by there abscence . Guess Metro Centre don't want the cost of all the seating they dont prvide impacting their bottom line , equally how does it look to have their shoppers siiting on the floor here and there ? not good . The metro centres hey day was in the 1990s , personally the pandemic aside this place will either have to change improve drastically or it will continue to die and wither away . Shame because back in the day it had a real decent offering for the consumer . Nowadays I think it's like a big warehouse , sterile and quite frankly dull .

Losing some of its main anchors such as Debenhams, House of Fraser and BHS (just to name a few) won't have helped. Many areas outside of the Metrocentre have their own retail parks with enough shops that travelling to the Metrocentre isn't always worth it.

Brings back memories of my childhood, my nana lived in jarrow, my aunts uncles cousins lived in marsden, south sheilds bouldon, huge family met up spent hours on the beach outside marsden grotto, looks much the same as it did in the 60s only the walls were chunky white things and there was a shop that sold buckets and spades icecreams etc, i have a picture from when i was a i was 5 years old little girl with my sister sat on a zebra ride that was outside the shop, im 63 now, always wanted to live in south shelids as did my mum all her relatives lived there but we stayed in nottingham where my dad was born, all passed on now parents aunts uncles and a few younger cousins, happy and sad memories but lovely to see oit again
