This stays in my top 5 and even though as time goes by ATLiens gets closer and closer to being it's equal, this album feels like the first 'Outkast' album where it didn't stick so closely to the boom bap new york template as much. 'Even though we got 2 albums, this one feel like the beginnin'.' - Big Boi, Never Scared (the song he wanted to begin the album)

Classic DITC right here. In my opinion this is O.C's best album, Jewelz is just a notch below. No doubt got overshadowed by the heavy hitters in 1994, one of the best years in hip hop history. My top 3 tracks are "Time's Up", "Born 2 Live" and "No Main Topic" I was torn on the original and remix of Born 2 Live because both are so dope.

90s westcoast rap has countless classics (even from just the whole DPGC collective alone) but for some reason they don't get enough appreciation or attention from the major hip hop review channels, even though the west had the game on lock back then and was bigger in most of country outside of New York than say Nas or Tribe.

I still have their debut rated higher but in 2024 I can honestly say that this sounds better than it did when it came out in 1995. You are absolutely spot on when you say they have matured both lyrically and sonically from Bizarre Ride. Runnin' will always be my #1 on this LP. Heck its a top 100 hip hop song of all time. My other 2 I'd go with Pharcyde and Y? But there are literally 5 joints that are so close in quality.

I wouldn't call Words From the Genius a failed project at all. Just different. I still bump it on occasion there's some heat on it. Tical was the first Wu solo project post 36 Chambers. I don't think it gets the love that it should. Sure its not at OB4CL, Liquid Swords or Ironman level but its still a solid release. My top 3 joints are Bring the Pain, Mr. Sandman and Release Yo Delf. Thanks for highlighting that word play on Bring the Pain its pretty special. Easily a top 10 Wu song for me.

@@FromThe36thChamber True. From a marketing and sales standpoint it was a flop. Reviews were mixed. Easy Mo Bee who did the majority of the production was relatively unknown at the time. Not sure that Cold Chillin did all they could because they didn't even release a single.

As a guy who grew up in the 80's, Licensed to Ill was definitely an influential album for me. It really sealed my love for hip hop. But the Beasties really morphed from that sound, starting with Paul's Boutique. When Check Your Head came out it was popular amongst the alternative crowd but I wasn't feeling it as much. Then Ill Communication came out and boy did I dig it. It was more of a representation of hip hop for me. My 3 tracks are "Sabotage", "Flute Loop" and "Get It Together". The video to "Sabotage" has to go down as one of the best ever.
@FromThe36thChamber12 күн бұрын
Those are great picks! And I have to agree with Sabotage being one of the best videos ever it's just iconic! Probably their best next to Intergalactic
