In Western cultures, crossing your fingers typically means good luck. However, in Vietnam, crossing your fingers, especially if there's a small space between them, resembles a girl's private parts and can be as offensive as using the F word.

I thought I’ve seen that cám ơn was an acceptable pronunciation. Is that true?

Their pronunciation seems like a mix of south and north, like the cåm on (they pronounce it with dáu hoi, like in Ha Noi) but in Sai Gon cám on (dáu sác) is more common, but really it matters very little.

What about "Cảm ơn nha"? I hear that very often in Saigon.

Yeah, truly! I like it, it's both warm and informal, it's nice... well that's my read anyway

@@GKQ333 "nha" (even tone) and "nhé" (rising tone) are different. Nhé is used to enthuse someone to do something, ask them to agree, to encourage an action, like "let's" in "let's go out" - "di choi nhé!" Nha: "cam on nha, cam on Em/Anh/Chi nha isn't encouraging, it's just a nice, friendly way to end your statement; "thanks". In Vietnamese language it happens a lot, tag words appearing at the end of a sentence or statement - hå, nhé, chú, often almost meaningless - ta, nha, but they soften the tone of the statement in a way. Vietnamese is a very respectful and polite language. ☮️.

@@grantperkins368 very thorough explanation. I was taught in writing though they are the same. Perhaps for some the writing has also changed and others are holding on. I prefer as you say kkk

Can you please elaborate on why saying Chúc may mắn 🤞 (Good luck 🤞) is something you shouldn't do in Vietnam? In my 21 plus years of multiple travels to Vietnam, I've never done it because I don't believe in "Good luck" or "Bad luck". But I did have my cousin Hoàng's (Jimmy) father in law would say to me ... Good Luck but his two fingers were not crossed, but formed a oval shaped. Later he explained to me that the hand sign means a ladies Vagina, lol 😆 Oh is this what you're referencing to? Dirty Ol' Men LOL 🤣

OMG 😳 This is too funny 🤣 I'm actually glad I never had this problem 21 years ago, lol. I would let her pick and choose, and listen 👂 to her for her recommendations 😁 And oddly it worked between us 🥰
