Nice - north west corner of the board is the optional chips to allow the computer to be networked on a lan (usually a school lan) - it was called econet. I can see that the chips set for allowing the computer to use floppy disk drives is installed The corrosion around the links (S21) and the keyboard connector is a little concerning. Take some photos of the link positions and I would remove the links and clean them and the keyboard connector with Deoxit or similar - the symptoms you’re seeing are similar to the keyboard being disconnected The main chips have date codes on them of the form YYWW (eg 8423 would be 23rd week of 1984) so you can have a look and probably tell roughly when the computer is made

Not bulging or leaking does not necessarily mean it's good, I've seen plenty of them leak around and rot through the leads, plus they can and do fail with no visible signs. If you got a recap kit which included them, then replace them, it's way easier than trying to track down random crashes and dead parts on the main board that it could cause.

@@RetroSaviour Try to open the video in Audacity or something and you'll get surprised ;) The music is highly compressed, as in the dynamics is removed and the gain is at 100% for both vocal and instruments, just to make it sound loader. It's commonly used in some pop/rap/etc music, especially for artists that either don't understand or just don't give a shit about dynamics and how to make better music with it, as in, without compression. Also note that this isn't the same sort of compression as in mpeg compression - that's something completely different.

It's not speed, it's the density of data (48 tracks per inch for 40 tracks and 96 tracks per inch for 80 tracks). This gave approximately 100k of storage for a 40 track disk and 200k of storage for an 80 track disk (doubled if the disk was double sided). 40 track drives were the first to appear on the market, but were replaced in popularity fairly quickly by 80 track drives.
@EdCourtenay
@EdCourtenay Ай бұрын
I should also point out that the sizes I quoted were for the original Disk Filing System (DFS) - the Advanced Disk Filing System (ADFS) used the 1770 disk controller as opposed to the 8271 and allowed for MFM encoding which increased the storage available to 180k in 40 track mode and 320k in 80 track mode per side.
