lol 4,000 dollars just to throw down the drain… that’s what it cost me to build my own entire off grid solar system with inverter, 48v batteries and 5 kw solar panels 😂

price is the primary problem with the Tesla solar shingles. I opted for a somewhat frugal 20 panel regular rooftop solar system around 2017. I will likely look to replace it sometime around 2030 as I will likely need a new roof by then. I hope by then the solar shingle roof is more competitively priced. I should have more money for a large system at that time but if the shingles are still like 4x the cost of a regular roof with traditional rooftop solar, I'll have to pass again. That is way too large of a premium.

A lot of work to get only a few active solar rows. The waferboard (not "plywood") covering would have been needed for most roofing, indeed strange that asphalt shingles had been installed over those large gaps, so ignore that price, plus the flashing and fascia boards. The sticky underlayment that Tesla uses is very expensive, and normally only used on almost flat roof sections, like over a porch. For asphalt shingles, concrete tiles, or metal panels, a much less-expensive polymer sheet is fine (I wouldn't use tar-paper). I don't know why more don't offer a Solar Carport, which gives protection for your car(s), makes access to the panel wiring easier, no risk of leaks damaging your home, and no pigeons nesting underneath. Perhaps that will be Elon's next genius. Humorous that they need safety harnesses for a 4 in 12 pitch one-story roof, but better safe than oops.

This is so awesome, I wish I found your video before I replaced my roof. I went metal because I didn't know the tesla option although I did think about a solar tile roof without knowing that this wasn't a dream. The metal roof was very expensive, I would go with tesla roof if I knew it existed.

I'm going down the path of solar now and am loving finding all of these videos. Sadly the math for the tesla solar roof seems to have shifted a lot, Tesla's contractor quoted me at $200k compared to equivalent production panels + a 50 year shingle roof for $50k.

$50,000 total cost. The approximate average monthly electric bill is $300(most average homeowners. lol who pay a $1600 monthly electric bill lol). $50,000/$400=167 months = 13.8 years to make even. lol, no thank you.

How has your powerwalls performed since you had it installed outside? Any problems with degraded performance due to varying temps of heat and cold? Any rust or critter problems? If you can redo, will you still install it outside?

If you're spending that much watering your lawn, even in a hot climate, you're drastically overwatering. My water usage doesn't even add up to that for an entire year. A properly maintained, healthy lawn takes very little water. That said, what I will say, is that your yard looks MUCH better that 99.9% of the "wild" yards out there. Most people use it as an excuse to do literally zero lawn maintenance.

Your yard looks great to me. I think biggest issue with solar panels, are the spent panels. Recycling them is not and probably never will be profitable. That being said I do have solar, and financially has save me a lot.

i just got a quote for my tesla roof at 226k. my roof is 4k square feet and has no plywood. so this includes 30k for plywood and does not include the 30% tax credit. which will be around 60k. all in all, the total should be 156k for the roof after tax rebates. i already have 3 powerwalls and that was 41k. but i really need a roof since it is wood shakes and a metal roof without solar is 120k. so for 30k more i can get an all in one system.

This panel can put out close to 100 watts kzbin.infoUgkxOqI2yqX0XVrhR2BMJciTWrHJpG8FhJyg when positioned in the appropriate southernly direction, tilted to the optimal angle for your latitude/date, and connected to a higher capacity device than a 500. The built in kickstand angle is a fixed at 50 degrees. Up to 20% more power can be output by selecting the actual date and latitude optimal angle. The 500 will only input 3.5A maximum at 18 volts for 63 watts. Some of the excess power from the panel can be fed into a USB battery bank, charged directly from the panel while also charging a 500. This will allow you to harvest as much as 63 + 15 = 78 watts. If this panel is used to charge a larger device, such as the power station, then its full output potential can be realized.

Does your savings offset the cost of the panels? That problem some people are having is it's going to take years before they actually see any savings. I just watched your video, The Damage on My Tesla Solar Roof.

I started in solar in 1979- the hard science and proof of solar panels being a good investment has been settled decades ago. But that is with conventional simple "traditional" solar panels where the basic design has not changed in 70 years. What people here are missing here is "How long will Tesla solar panels last?" Because unless their panels last 20-30 years without problems - you simply cannot say! The unusual complexity of their panels basic design makes the chances of that long life a very bad bet. Saying they are great in the first few years is like saying a car is reliable as you drive it off the dealers parking lot for the very first time! Sorry, but only 20-30 years of reliable performance in the real world will prove if their panels design is reliable and a good investment.

Going to clean solar units to see if they work better...... you really made that a question?! And that brings up another good point, not only is this ridiculously expensive, but id never make a return on it because my bill is consistently $50 and i only use about 4,000kwh per year according to my statement And since i only pay about $600/year theres absolutely no point to invest because investing would just be a waste of money And thats based on the fact that i wanted to add a BASIC setup to my garage to get about 100wh to the garage and even that was gonna cost over $1k

Wow, only 5.9 peak? I don't know what my peak potential is but I'm getting 8.0 on my 24 solar panels from SunPower usually between 11am and 1pm. They cost me a penny though, $46k, but with Net meetering and Solar savings I hope to make up that cost in 8 years or less. (Net meetering is selling back the Solar energy Im not using which is usually the entire time the Sun is up. Think of it as your meter running backwards since more energy is generated than I am using). It comes out to about $4 on bad days and $10+ on good sunny days). I expect to probably pay 2 to 3 hundred dollars per year where my avg was $500 per month.

Solar panels could boost renewable energy but damage the global climate - here’s why The black surfaces of solar panels absorb most of the sunlight that reaches them, but only a fraction (around 15%) of that incoming energy gets converted to electricity. The rest is returned to the environment as heat. The panels are usually much darker than the ground they cover, so a vast expanse of solar cells will absorb a lot of additional energy and emit it as heat, affecting the climate. -Source: The Conversation
