I just lost my dad. Sepsis from metastatic lung cancer into the brain. He had brain surgery to try to fix it but it turned him into a vegetable. Radiation would have been better...he was 1 week away from his 80th birthday... I sat by his side for 3 weeks as he faded. We listened to this song when he indicated he was done. Not done fighting, he was a Mexican immigrant and a drafted vietnam vet, disabled at age 24 for life with his leg blown out. Married the whitest pollack chick in Cicero, Chicago and had me and my bro. Giving up wasn't in his vocabulary. He landed a hot one...my mom..old-school broad to the bone. He was done living. To keep going was the burden, and it was ONLY for us, as we later realized... he had fought his whole life and got shit on for it. He took 3 bullets in VietNam only to be welcomed back by Jane Fonda hippies and basement-dwellers who made his life hell through no fault of his own...it was a draft... Nobody can prepare you for dying. Nobody could prepare me from seeing my Superman in a vegetative state from the supposed #1 neurosurgeon in Illinois serving all the football players...money is no object...the HOPE you feel....until it all fails. And there he is. Your father. Your Superman. Vegetative. The Art of Dying was our anthem. It gave him courage when he just wanted to go. It gave ME courage when I wanted to go. It gave US courage together, as father and son, to face the inevitable together. Two things I learned: 1) Dying is your own journey. Even if you're holding their hand, they are experiencing death alone. 2) All we can do is tell them we love them. Tell your family you love them. Always. Nothing else is important. Trump? Biden? LOL Perspective.

It’s a fucking shame that most Gojira fans in 2024 don’t know that they were basically French eco-terrorist Morbid Angel for their first handful of releases. It wasn’t until the release of From Mars to Sirius that they started getting major play on the international stage, and when they still had songs like “Clone” as part of their set they would just annihilate foreign audiences with it. I consider myself privileged to have seen this song played in front of sold out house of about 800 in Chicago in 2011.
