This is beautiful! Thank you for being a part of performing and preserving this artistic knowledge. Thank you too, for your dedication. The hurricane was no small thing. I'm glad you are able to return to some sense of 'normal' in order to post this video. 🎉

Thanks for this, very clear. Didn’t know there’s a difference dying plant based fibers, and now I have more appreciation for how good it must feel to create your amazing artwork with naturally sourced and handcrafted materials. Play on!

Mountain Trollops are some of the most beautiful of flowers in the Southern Appalachian region. I've always felt a spiritual connection to them. I see them sometimes, when I close my eyes, swaying in the crisp mountain breeze, or bathed in a gentle rain, their pink petals beaded with droplets or the milky nectar they secrete seasonally. In my day, we used to pluck them from the sides of the road and ride them to town in the hay wagon, where they would decorate the local markets.

You are so spot on with what you say. At 66 years old I thought I 'knew' what there was to know about abuse and the more I learn the more I find out that there is a lot I don't know and to try to be open to learning new things at my age. Yes to what you said about brushing your teeth. with my mom there was no predicting what would set her off and she was, as you described, a ball of rage. I think back and picture a little girl, told to brush her teeth, then being in trouble for doing what she was told to d. Confusing. Crazy making stuff!! Yes, as kids we are often told it is our fault, that we are "bad' and we caused these things to happen and that is a lot of horse shit right there and very damaging to a child. Gaslighting! Another beautiful and heartfelt video. Please keep making them!!

You are courageous and strong to share all of this and it helps other people to know that they are not alone. In my family it was my mother who was abusive, and neglectful. My parents also shared things with me that were not appropriate to share with your child. The only way I could begin to heal was to move away from the dysfunctional family dynamics, and to listen to other wise women and myself. Healing is taking a lifetime. My parents, also, frowned on divorce and considered it a failure, and because of that we were trapped in a very unhappy household. It was not the best thing for us, for my parents to 'stay together for the children's sake'. Perhaps they would have been happier people if they had separated, and as a result we could have had a chance to be happier children as well. I, too developed chronic pain, anxiety, and depression. I so agree with you about art. Whatever art we are inspired to do. I am trying to reconnect with that joy and freedom of creating in a way that is authentic to myself without the oppression of judgement from others, whether that judgement is real or only in my mind. Thank you for creating this video. It is refreshing to see you talking like a real human being, not scripted, or made to look like your world is perfect. Please keep telling your story. It's important and you are also telling the story of so many of us who do not have the ability to share our own, very similar, stories.

I was watching an Erin Parsons victorian era makeup vid and they used dried/powdered walnut leaves for eyeshadow. Also, never knew you could use sumac leaves for ink, was always just told the seeds were survival fruits. What a useful plant.

I use the sumac for the tannins that it has to prepare cellulose fibers for natural dying.

I share your sense of urgency in late July because my heritage apple tree is producing tons of fruit right now. This is also the time of my county's Studio Tour and my biggest source of income from my work. Each project could take up all my time. But, gradually, I've found people who want to share in the apple bounty. So I give away lots of them. Those that go bad before I can get to them, I scatter far and wide as I drive to various places. The applesauce I will eat in the winter, but I hope that someone will be harvesting apples from the trees I've planted years after I'm gone.
