I need to know how to disable s110 raid on dell poweredge r720 please
@cloudninjas
@cloudninjas 8 күн бұрын
Easy process, just access the server's LifeCycle Controller during boot, navigate to "Device Settings", select the S110 RAID controller, and then choose to delete any existing virtual disks or change the RAID level to "Non-RAID"

No, the Dell Precision T7910 does not require a separate SAS RAID controller as it comes with an integrated SAS RAID controller, allowing you to use SAS drives and configure RAID without a dedicated card; however, for advanced RAID features like RAID 5 or 6, you may need to add a separate PCIe RAID controller card depending on your configuration. Key points about the T7910 and RAID: Integrated SAS controller: The T7910 has a built-in SAS controller that supports basic RAID configurations. Optional RAID card: If you need more advanced RAID capabilities, you can add a dedicated PCIe RAID controller card. SATA support: The integrated controller can also handle SATA drives.

I think you are misunderstanding the video, we never said "You need a separate RAID Controller", what we did say is that "You need a RAID controller for SAS drives" whether it be the onboard RAID controller that comes in the system or a separate controller, it is needed in order to fully utilize your SAS drive. Appreciate your concern, hope this helps you out!

Just a note for those who may have bought their server from techmikeny. He updated all the drivers before sending it my way. do the verification first before even worrying about this step. check for the current versions first.

Did I hear correctly 7.68tb per drive bay? So if you really wanted to, you could have nearly 62tb of storage?
@cloudninjas
@cloudninjas 8 күн бұрын
Yes, we tested the solid state drives for the R710 and were able to install 7.68TB per drive. Dell's spec sheets are out of date so we do our very best to update the specs by testing our machines so that the community has more options for server hardware.

Following the labels for the memory is the best way to fully utilize your CPU. If you only have enough memory to fill up the white tab slots then that's what you can do since the white tab indicates that its a primary channel

FYI - This method requires a newer iDRAC firmware or the digital signatures will not work and won't update. You have to manually update to an intermediate older version that works with the old signature methods, then you can update to a new version that works with the new signature methods. I got my BIOS and iDRAC and other firmware updated by manually updating the BIOS using the .EFI file from Dell's download page and using the Boot Menu option to pull it from a USB Stick. I then updated my iDRAC to an intermediate version (2.70.70.70) using the 32-bit EXE from Dell's site uploaded via the iDRAC Update and Rollback firmware update page. I was really confused because I wouldn't have expected the Windows EXE to be the file to upload via this interface. Then I was able to update to 2.86.86.86 using the EXE, which is the latest as of January 2025. At some point, Dell started requiring SHA-256 signatures instead of SHA-1 signatures, and older iDRAC firmware can't deal with the new versions without first going to a version like 2.70.70.70 before going all the way to 2.86.86.86. For reference, I was originally on 2.63.60.61 when I acquired my server.

But you can use U.2 NVMe's in R730xd, there is the same PCIe card as in R630 and then you get the last 4 positions (out of 24) in backplane to support U.2 NVMe.

Can we still use this method if our current version is way back outdated? Let say I have 9 BIOS version to update to the latest version. Should I use manual 1 by 1 or I can use this mass update tools? Which one is preferred?
@cloudninjas
@cloudninjas 8 күн бұрын
Mass Updates is the best way to update the BIOS and everything else in your server in one go, may take longer if the server hasn't been updated in a long time but it should still get the job done.

do you also configure raid on server , before installing server ?
@cloudninjas
@cloudninjas 8 күн бұрын
We configure RAID once the RAID card is installed. If the server already has a RAID software installed then you could configure that by itself, but most people are looking for higher RAID levels than what an onboard software RAID would provide.

I reckon a hard drive in production, a 15k enterprise sas HDD from segate etc. Will outlast an average SAS SSD.
@cloudninjas
@cloudninjas 24 күн бұрын
Negative. Mechanical parts inside Hard Drives. More prone to fail. The average life span of an enterprise SSD vs HDD... SSD is 5 to 10 years vs HDD 3 to 5 years. Not to mention the other benefits: speed, noice, power efficiency, size etc. Real benefit of HDDs is price. Have a good weekend!
