A shorting bar across live rails would cause a shutdown in power within microseconds and a bloody big current flow! REM Ohms law ! If a potential of 1 volt is placed across a resistance of 1 ohm then a current of 1 amp will flow !

I saw a program a few months ago that keeps 2 gas turbine generators on standby in case the grid came down! I guess it’s highly unlikely but say a bomb attack on the line is always possible or say an asteroid could strike anytime anywhere!

Just realised one of those bridges is the Philanthropic School bridge between Nutfield and Redhill, the Philanthropic school was a very naughty boys school I spent 3 years hard at and we used to wait for trains to come along and we would give drivers various "hand signals" and stuff, one of the night staff at the place was a retired Redhill driver called Chris Martin whom the drivers reached out to, Chris was a lovely bloke but he put the fear of god in us lads plus let me father know we were giving rizz to the poor drivers so I copped it twice as hard and we did stop annoying drivers passing under neath the bridge. Ironic too is I grew up literally a few minutes walk from Sundridge Park station shown here when a 2 car tyneside EPB would trundle along between Bromley North and Grove Park and platform 3's mainline chord was still in use allowing Bromley North to Charing Cross expresses that would be non stop from Grove Park to Waterloo East with the little 2 car tyneside strapped to the rear end of a 10 car consist during rush hour which would be parted at Bromley North and the 8 cars spare would wend their way back to Grove Park carriage sheds waiting for the next rush hour.

I always remember me father back in the 70's moaning on when he had to go over from Gillingham signal box and unlock the Chatham dockyard line points and wind them over by hand, more so when it was raining and he had to quick about it as Chatham main line is a busy line and EMU's held up both sides as the usual 33 would scoot over to berth in the carriage shed sidings but the crossover was box controlled but the dockyard line was padlocked out of use usually. He used to moan a lot when he was at Sittingbourne and relief'd along the Sheppey lines and had to go out and allow the Ford trains or the steel trains to enter the main line, Ford's points did have a handy shelter protecting the ground frame with a mains socket so he would brew up some tea whilst my uncle Ray would chuckle along in his 33 waiting for his rostered window going through pints of strong dark BR tea, Sheerness was less hospitable with the rain and sea spray making life damp and no access to tea either.

The technical term for intervention and SPAD's is getting "rednosed" which invariably ended up with a carpeting by the traction manager and persistent reoffenders would be moved to another role or simply sacked. The thing with ATP and TPMS is they can't be ignored, this was a major concern with AWS as a driver would cancel the sunflower and still not pay as much attention to the road ahead, DRA's also are only effective if a driver concentrates on them and works with them as the book states, a lot of drivers don't even bother with them and there is no actual use other than a post it note saying "dont go through that red" TPMS is actually quite good as it calculates a braking application too light would SPAD the train so orders a full brake and also sees a train accelerating too hard for track conditions and will do the same and traction managers routinely monitor trains black boxes to see who gets red nosed.

Was thinking when they couple up two services at Salisbury, they don't do all that stuff the driver just rams it in good and hard, quick pull away and that is it. I have coupled EPB's and some CEP's at Selhurst when they were a man down and no relief so muggins here got drafted in and abs mucky too. BR was like the army, never volunteer a thing as when they found out me father had taught me how to work a NX signalling panel guess who in the TOPs portakabin got lumbered passing units in and out and around Selhurst yards cos the chief shunter was up yard and he would get me on the radio or the fone if he was mugging tea in the works "pass such and such unit to LB will you for exit pathing and window" so a call to central panels London Bridge to get the various details and permissions which I had to trudge up to the waiting driver to give to then back to the cabin and handover the unit to LB setting the points up for exit and off they would go.

All my old man got for a lifetime of service including being one of the first staff to arrive at St Johns and going like 2 decades plus without a sick day and forced early retirement having worked virtually every day off as well from the 50's to the 90's was a crappy clock of dubious quality... He was promised Cuxton's starter signal when it got replaced... never got it despite him rebuilding in the 70's Cuxton and Snodland boxes including fitting a flushing toilet and practically rebuilt Snodland... both listed... I spoke to someone who spoke to someone at Network Rail whose attitude when asked about the various rebuilt signal boxes was pretty poor. When he died some years past, his employer after BR/NR Swanage Railway put on memorial trains and had actual mourning for the bloke.

As an ex-Chiltern Driver, I can say that you NEVER pass a signal at Danger unless given permission by the Bobby, a Pilotman, Engineering Supervisor or hand-signalman. I used to follow 2 guidelines during my rail career of 25 years and they were: 1: Never Assume and 2: If In Doubt, Don't! Those 2 principles always kept me safe.

When I was at VSC Clapham Junction, had a very high failure rate, ASE had to be paid off, replacement was to be sacked in 6 months time with chief signal engineers unless failure rate dropped, bought in man from Stanley led a task force team, he reduced failure rate.

I was always under the impression that you were sacked on the spot for a SPAD caused by you as the driver. This was a clear failure to follow procedure. In most non safety critical jobs that's gross misconduct.
