Peck's a great actor, and this is his greatest performance. But for me, the best line goes to Genn, "Let Ahab beware Ahab."

At 2:00 Captain Ahab says he will be waiting for him here, and puts his finger on the map at Bikini Atoll, where the H Bomb was tested after the war. It was known as Eschscholtz Atoll between the 19th century and 1946. Great movie. Moby Dick was said to have been inspired by a real boat sinking by a whale, as described in Philbrick's book In the Heart of the Sea.

What a contrast. As General Savage in "Twelve O'Clock High" Greg Peck's character is a nice guy who projects menace, as Captain Ahab he IS menace!

Peck is obviously fantastic in this scene but Leo Genn is wonderful too. Look at his face at about 1:18 : So much conveyed in such a subtle movement of the eyes.

Yes, Starbuck is following along with Ahab's words, quite interested, until (that telling shift of the eyes) ... he realizes that Ahab is getting a little too serious about this Moby Dick business.

Unbelievable how Gregory Peck later said he disliked this performance...I think he should have gotten the Oscar. I was just a boy and this movie blew me away. Gregory Peck was the greatest American actor of his generation.

Maybe he was influenced by some critics at the time who said that he didn't fit the role and looked too much like Lincoln. I think he was perfect.

Worse still, Peck blew up his relationship with director John Huston over this. When he found out he had not been Huston's first pick for the part, he resented Huston for "tricking" him into accepting a part he didn't think he was the best fit for, and he fell out with Huston over it. In later years, after he'd had a chance to reconsider, he tried to mend fences, but Huston had been too hurt by Peck's criticism, and wasn't willing to accept his apology.

You can even watched in his eyes: the madness, the madness of man.
Ahab doesn't really want revenge on the whale, he want's revenge on god for the pain of existing.

Prior to this voyage, Ahab was a very able whaling captain. His employers think he only lost a leg- they don't realize that the most severe damage was psychological.
