I got LEGO Racers 2 as a Christmas present when I was eight years old. This game is a sacred creation which now defines my childhood. People can complain about it all they want. But to me this game is part of the foundation for my growth and character. Thank you ATD and LEGO SOFTWARE for your gift.

LEGO especially in 1999 was adamant that their toys were only to promote positive values. Even in something like a racing game with no plot, it's likely they demanded that the "villain" still set a positive example for kids to follow. RR's character was basically positioned to show little kids how to emulate being a champion in the *right* way - winning with class but also being a good sport about losing. Shadow Z is just millennial slop. There is a belief that kids can't understand nuance (this is false, some of the biggest children's cartoons of the 90's had very complex plotlines - go watch Hey Arnold for example), so they go with exaggerated "bad guy" traits because it's "easier for kids to understand." "This person is mean, they are ugly, they cheat, their car looks scary." But it comes across as lazy, because most of us grow out of dichotomous thinking by the time we're eight.

Wow, I’ve talked about LEGO’s family brand stance in other videos, but until your comment it hadn’t clicked for me that it might have affected the writing in their games, since all that was outsourced to other studios. Thanks for pointing that out!

While it is sad that it went too soon, at least you guys got to play it back in the day. Us Australians got screwed over, and when we eventually did get to play it, all we got to experience was a play test demo that we couldn't sign into!

The micro transactions are a huge deal breaker for me. I would've loved to try out this game if they weren't included, as I've been wanting to see a new proper LEGO racing game since I was a teen growing up with these games. I hate it when practices like this ruin what could've been an otherwise decent game!
@Subpixel14 күн бұрын
You can definitely play it all the way through without interacting with them, if that helps!

Only if you want the cosmetic items. The story has some grind in its own way, but totally unrelated to the microtransactions.

I like how the choices in Pentiment are black and white, good or evil. Like real life good intentions can lead to bad outcomes. In Pentiment. I thought I was nurturing Ursula’s active imagination when encouraging her enthusiasm for Pagan stories. But it turned out that I nurtured her into growing up to speak heresy and get burned at the stake. And that was a gut punch right at the end of the game to see that I’d caused that.

You just made the video I wanted to see! I just finished Lego 2K last week (so quickly compared to me as a 7 year old trying to finish Lego Racer 1). This new Lego 2k game is pretty good, but I feel exactly what you describe: Rocket Racer was an enigmatic character we wanted to understand and be like. So even though Lego 2k is obviously denser, Rocket Racer makes a huge difference. With a good antagonist Lego 2k could have beat Lego Racer.

Brilliant analysis of an incredible game! One minor correction to be made though is that the song during the title sequence is an arrangement based on Chopin's Raindrops Prelude, not Rachmaninoff's Isle of the Dead which is used later

Great video! I'm glad people got so much joy from this game as I did working on it. I was one of the 3d Environment Artists on this title. A little known fact: all our levels were designed in a DOOM level editor before we made them in 3d! We had a lot of FPS gamers on that team ;)

It's like Char from Gundam. I feel more threatened by someone with better skills than me than someone with better tools. those tools don't mean anything if you suck. Char took on some of the most dangerous Gundams in the universe with nothing but a Zaku-II. he beat your ass into the ground if you slipped so much as once. you had bigger and better weapons than him, but he still was a struggle. this is helped make him so memorable. this was like bringing a sword to the fight, and he brought a spoon, but he still won.

Nice video. I know New Vegas interaction chains can be broken by simply putting a quest on the back burner until you can ace the check, but I play games like New Vegas by forcing myself to play out scenarios ‘like it or not.’ In other words, I don’t let myself avoid consequence. Obviously this is a bit flawed design wise because the game doesn’t force you to take your choice on the chin. I had to discipline myself to just take what the game should be trying to serve me.

18:59 Lego Racers’ Versus Mode wasn’t even playable right out of the box for PC, but that’s because it requires an extra game controller. You can’t play the game’s versus mode with just a keyboard, and it requires an extra game controller

As somebody who didn't grow up with Bionicle and just played the game for the first time today, I must say I didn't do much for me. It just felt like Putt-Putt or some similarly mediocre point and click. I guess what makes it special must stem from hit it fits in with the rest of the universe.

It has multiplayer, y play that a lot, it was a big comunity. as a south american kid getting original games was realy hard so we were not costum to multiplayer gaming. this demo use to work no lag and it was 2 multiplayer maps free. this was the game i get use to play before cs. i remember sharing the demo with schools friends and everybody start to play this for months. the other good stuf it that it was easy to run on any computer.

The battles are extremely frustrating and no fun. Of course battles can be difficult, but then they should also be fun. Roll, roll, block, roll Oh one hit and my character is dead... Nothing in this game is fun, neither the story, nor the discovering, nor the levelling. The only thing this game does well is look nice. You think Eldenring is great because there are things to discover ? There's that in 10000 other games too. What was it about the difficulty level that always gave you so much trouble, did you have problems with it? I was interested in that at the end. Because I personally have a lot of trouble with the enemies in the game. So how did you deal with that? I'm sorry, the video was terrible.

I didn't like the feel of 2. I'm not against open world racers, I play them as well. But you can't like everything in a genre. I can't quite explain it but it has that....lighter feel to it, like LEGO Island 2 had, like it was flimsier....I dunno.

I haven't played 2K Drive. I see what you're saying when it comes to beating a strong legitimate opponent, but don't dismiss the feeling of beating a cheater. There's a certain catharsis that comes from playing clean and beating someone who uses dirty tactics. It's different form what beating a legit opponent will give you. Not saying it's better or worse, but it is different.

Rocket Racer is an antagonis while Shadow Z is just a villain. Yes, there is a difference between an antagonist and a villain. An atagonist doesn't have to be evil, they just have to stand in the way of the protagonist (You have to beat Rocket to win the game). A villain is just bad person (Shadow Z is a cheating jerk). Even in Lego Racers 2, Rocket is still the same, though he's bummed that he lost in the previous game, he's still a good sport about it.

Such a good video, currently bathing in pleasant nostalgia. Bionicle is so cool, even speaking as an adult in their 30s, and the passion that Templar put into this project really elevated the whole franchise. Crazy that many of the different iterations the Toa would go through were planned from the beginning. Thanks for making this! Shoutout to my favorite Toa, Onua

Honestly, i actually felt bad for Shadow Z when i beat him. When the player wins the Sky Cup race, Shadow Z is shown applauding the player for some reason, when the (in my opinion) overused animation of an enraged defeated racer is used with opponents, who don't show the antagonistic behaviour towards the player that Shadow Z does. Quick example: Dr. Jette Fastro personally enlists the player to help her with the robot attack tower defense minigame, as the player is known in Bricklandia for their skills, yet she is furious for being beaten by the player. This does not make sense, now does it? At least the developers inserted the storyteller-terminals as post release content, explaining Shadow Z's backstory (and why Racington uses THAT car in the opening race), at least partially explaining why Shadow Z is the pushover he is.

I remember when I was young I was disappointed when I found out that instead of being able to race Rocket racer outside the Xalax dome, where the intro cutscene showed much cooler tracks, you just raced him on the boring circle indoor track.
