What an incredible essay! Well edited, well researched, and well written. Really hope as the channel grows more people come back to this video as this really is excellent.

I feel a great disturbance in the algorithm. As if millions of bad opinions suddenly cried out in confusion and were suddenly silenced. I feel something wonderful has happened.

Interesting analysis. I’ve completely ignored constellation and have spent my first 25 levels doing everything but. Hell, I’ve even married Sarah already, and haven’t seen any of these “multiverse beings” yet, maybe because I haven’t been to Neon or spent any time with the CEO of Constellation. My mindset was more of the No Man’s Sky variety. Let’s just go explore this universe, not following any particular story but randomly doing scanning missions or deliveries, etc. The stories I’ve found so far along the way have certainly been much more interesting to me than the promise of the main mission, and after seeing your analysis, I can honestly say my approach was right, as I’ve enjoyed it immensely. Again, interesting analysis and perspective. Great video. Thanks for posting it. Cheers.

really great video! great job tying a bunch of literary theory into the video and putting a lot of your own experiences in and making it feel so personal!

Thoughtful, intelligent, and insightful, and in being these things, utterly scathing. This is 1 of the best videos about Starfield that I've seen.

Great literary analysis of Starfield

The idea of the "aliens" as multiverse hoppers and the idea that a multiverse cheapens every consequence could have combined into an interesting setup. What if these multiverse hoppers were the villains of the story - not because they want the same thing as the player, but because they've become inured to consequences they never have to face? Imagine if these people were running about ruining lives and whole planets just because they could... like a video game player? That could create not only some compelling antagonists and interactions but possibly create some real introspective moments for the player reflecting on their own actions. I haven't played the game, so I can't speak from experience, but it sounds like one heck of a missed opportunity to me.

Really great analysis, Jake. Man, I too was really excited about this game. Especially based on the interviews with the creators. Super bummed to see that it was indeed just a shoot'em up rehashing of No Man's Sky... The absolute fury I felt when I reached the end of that game only to have it start over!

Not gonna lie, I'm likely not even going to reach the end of this game just based on how much sidequesting i've already got lined up.

Good video, so I'm commenting for the algorithm. It's rare to find a game review where the author has something meaningful to say; much like starfield, ironically.

I enjoyed the critique. I stopped going through Unity because after seven times, nothing ever changed, and the boredom set in. The vistas are pretty, but it's not really a "game" per se.

I agree the main quest was disappointing, and I think because it's just a way to give you a New Game+. I did that briefly to see what would happen, but then went back to an old save because I wasn't ready to dump all my cash and goodies yet. Maybe when I've maxed my skills it'll be time to try it. The side missions were more interesting. That one with Roosevelt I found the only way I could NOT kill Amelia Earhart was to hide in my ship and sleep for an hour so I wasn't involved in any battles.

KILL. LOOT. RETURN. - orders found on super mutant corpses in fallout 4. Microsoft has both Obsidian Entertainment, and Bethesda Softworks, they have no excuse for an RPG with 7 years of development to be so creatively shallow.

I think anyone should be able to criticize a game even if their not a game developer that’s like saying I can’t dislike a meal because I did not kook it

That's fair. What I meant with that section was more that - as someone who comes from a background in filmmaking I struggle when I see non-filmmakers critique films along the lines of things like "they should've composed the shot X way" or "they should've lit the scene like Y", because I can typically see all the real-world reasons why the filmmakers may have been unable to do it that way even if they'd wanted to - so I don't want to be that kind of person when it comes to the more specific details of game design because I am not knowledgable enough in regards to the process of their creation to be comfortable proposing fixes that may not may not be viable in the structure of Bethesda's game design practices. As you say, that's certainly not a reason to rule out wholesale critique of a game, but why I personally don't like engaging in that specific form of it.
