@mikewallace8087 oh ya! Went through that, too, once at -33 Celsius... I didn't sleep that night because I had to watch the chimney that caught fire. I was about 50 km away from the next neighbor. Fun right!? Haha!

I own a 23 Crosstrek 6 spd. Is the 50/50 split superior to the 60/40 split front wheel bias in snow, mud or climbing? If so why is that the case?

Thx for your question. It's a good one that keeps coming back... My one answer that no one talks about is simple: It comes down to tires. You can have the perfect awd distribution system (not talking about locked diff), but the limiting factor is the TIRES. For this video, both cars have the same tire, one studded, not the other one, but in deep snow, it doesn't matter... Perhaps a slight advantage for non studded (barely since they are high-end make/model. See the video description) This is a Subaru that most users drive 99% on the paved, gravel, and snowy roads. Off trail, muddy, and hill climbing on more extreme conditions, the Subaru will still shine. My CVT has never let me down. Perhaps the perfect split 50/50 would be better, but I challenge anyone to make a video on pushing the boundaries comparing both systems in real life... see who is better. Perhaps they will both be winners. If not, then put on shoes and walk up the darn hill. Haha! Cheers!

I have a 2012 XV. It doesn't have any of this fancy kit. When things get a bit dicey, the Vehicle Dynamics Control warning light comes on. Does this mean I'm very close to getting bogged in snow/ice?

This means your car is applying brakes to wheels that are spinning, so wheels with traction will get more power. You might of felt like power was almost cut to crawl... just floor it. You might want to turn OFF traction control, then the wheels will spin and keep momentum. Have fun!

Seems as though you should have been driving on fresh snow each time; surely using x mode to go over ground you had already driven without x mode skews the results, since the snow will be different and have grooves?

The manual is better imo just because it has the more classic Subaru viscous coupling and 50/50 split for the powertrain. The CVT might have the xmode but the power train is front wheel bias 60/40 and it has a multi plate clutch instead of center diff. Not as simple or robust as a viscous coupling.

There's not much of gain in gas mileage, unless you commute close by maybe. Would be handy of you need some electricity if going camping. I prefer the 2.5 engine because it has that much more HP for carrying my roadtrip gears and flooring it when it is needed 😄 I would suggest trying them out. They both drive the same. Then there's looks... that's up to you. I think all the new crosstrek will come with the 2.5 next gen. Up to you! Enjoy! Get winter dedicated tires if you want real awd fun in winter!

Interesting video. Thankyou for sharing. Weird Subaru calls it "Outdoor" traction control. Makes me wonder who in Japan drives them indoors? Who knows, maybe they have a indoor shag carpet mode. The more I look into Crosstreks the more intriguing they are. Thanks again.

Just clicked on it to find out how well these vehicles do on various winter terrain and I’m impressed considering they are not very high up off the ground they really are amazing at leaping over things cruising around no problem at all on the crummy roads. I think I’ll be switching to Subaru for my next vehicle

Even my 2016, with no X-Mode, is impressive on slippery roads, hills, and off-camber climbs. It can lift a tire or two and continue climbing. I just have to keep applying gentle throttle and let the TCS computer vector the torque. My Jeep YJ wouldn't continue climbing once a wheel or two lifted unless I packed heavy cargo in the back...until I installed a lunchbox locker in the rear. I'm planning on a rear lunchbox locker for the Crosstrek too, even though it will never be the offroader that a steel-armored open Jeep can be. I'm also trying to figure out some anti-swaybar disconnects for the Crosstrek. It already has skids, AT Trails, and a winch.

Only problem is the dealerships. I tried to buy an outback and a xtrek from 2 different dealerships, Kalifornia and Nevada. Both times the internet poc was fantastic and both times the dealerships had me walking in less than 10 minutes. Once when on-site in Kalifornia and once over the phone in Nevada. Too bad… sent a note to corporate and got a survey back which had nothing to do with my feedback.

Might be a silly question, but, when you on a regular hill, at a light and you’re at a stop, does the car want to roll back or does is stay in place when you release the brake? 30days out from purchase and this is something I’d like to avoid in my next purchase. Thanks in advance!
@OutdoorFun01

It has auto brake lock. So when you release the brake, the car holds in place for a little while. It doesn't roll back.

I rather have the 2.5 liter sport (outdoor in Canada). It makes a huge difference. The duel x-mode is nice, but not so much of a difference for me since most of the time I never use it and just turn traction control off. The video does make it justice though. For me, power, tuffer transmission and neoprene like seats was the deal breaker.

Traction control turns off automaticly in that setting and cannot be turned on. That is how it should be, since wheel slip is the best way to have full power and keep momentum.
