I’ve struggled for the longest time while using bass plugins. The low end on my P Bass just seemed completely out of control! I kept thinking to myself, surely I shouldn’t be high passing as high as 100-200Hz, essentially the fundamental range of the bass. When you mentioned here that DI signals can be much stronger, that makes much more sense. However, is recording direct from the bass guitar into an interface an ideal method? Or perhaps there should be something in between? Thank you.

I think it sounds better before the processing

I can hear the difference, with that warmer low end, but.. its not hugely different, highlighting for me that the better the source signal the less you have to do.. and it always has to be kept in perspective that its about how it all sits with the rest of the track.. hearing it solo like this is a bit misleading id suggest..

5 years later, do you think the focusrite is still relevant? I was thinking about adding it. I have the ssl and amek 9099.

The peak of the output is way higher than that of the input, of course the processed signal sounds louder. The input peaks at around -6db while the output peaks at around 0db. Redo this demo with the peaks matched please. I really want to know if this plugin is actually worth a damn or just snake oil.

Not my favorite trick. Cuts through, yeah, absolutely, but with heaps of "ch's" and "s's" and "kuh's" and whatnots. Not pleasing to my ears. It's a quick-and-efficient trick when you don't have the time to go deeper: there should be more room in the mix, in the highs, to start with! The instrumental mix is way too rich and busy up there. This trick is similar to those employed in mastering for loudness wars... compete, compete, compete!

ok so I take out harshness, but then the dullness of the vocal takes over. what plugin can rejuvenate the dullness and make it more full without enhancing more of the harshness.

would this be effective for me as I am deaf in one ear. I wonder if abbey roads studio 3 would be better since I can tilt my head and listen with my left ear?

Better suited as a supplemental processor, not as the sole plugin on a mix buss. And yes, oversampling makes all the difference.

I am doing this currently on an analog console and an outboard compressor. And am running into some significant phasing issues. As I push the Aux fader up to blend it gets really thin and all of the low end goes away and doesn’t come back until the parallel signal over takes the primary signal. I really want this to work with the analog channels.

Great tip. though in the digital world these work arounds that Andy has done aren't really needed.

The Fletcher Munson curves are right ! But only if you have a flat neutral monitoring speaker in your studio... If not, so when you have a taste speaker setup, the curves are useless... Cause you hear, what the FM curves show, when you mirroring the FM curves, horizontally In a flat neutral scenario, you hear, the screaming mids or the lack of bass, easily... I have a flat neutral speaker setup and have the FM curves in my mind... It works :-)

You could call this fader a “remote threshold”… you can use this technique for recording vocals to keep the recording from over compressing.

To me it sounds like the class a is in stereo and the original is in dual mono. I personally prefer the sound of dual mono over stereo compression for mix bus. Here I feel there is more depth on the original… is that just me?

Knock knock from 2024, I have about one hundred WAV files (church services) that were recorded on one channel. The mixer had a 3.5mm going out of the right monitor directly into a digital recorder. The digital recorder is set on Stereo, but was only getting that one input. The audio quality itself is fine… I would love to convert these all to stereo or at least have audio coming into both right and left headphones…. Thanks for letting me bump and share my issue.
