Great quality content. Question: if you're supposed to have contrast, when do you use the center column (rational)?
@PimpmyType6 күн бұрын
Thank you! Well, you do not always need to strive for contrast. If you want a similar typeface regarding the form model, then you can choose each row. Also the middle one. Hope that makes sense.

You always bring fun to the serious Type conversations! Examples in this video are obviously wrong. Could you choose something more challenging, to wrap my head around? 😆 How do you approach design in general, are you more of a metric or optical person? More of these educative videos with guests! I've noticed that my clients think geometric sans fonts are perfectly created. But often these fonts have issues with overall composition. I first "sense" fonts optically, and secondary is a learned metric.

"font: system-ui, sans-serif" if you really want your website to feel like the OS its running on.

Absolutely, that’s a good tip. font-family: "-apple-system, system-ui, sans-serif"; and you should get Apple’s SF Pro (which is very decent) on an Apple device. Not sure if "system-ui" would work here on a Mac.

What about font subsets? I reduced Geologica Regular (luv it, thanks Oliver!) TrueType from 133kb to 34kb. What helped, of course, was that I knew I was only going to use Latin extended.

Subsetting fonts makes a lot of sense! Especially when you use multiple scripts (Latin and Cyrillic for example), it would even make more sense to split these in several files. And as you put it in your example, it makes total sense!

I subscribed to PimpMyType only recently, and I've started discovering the talks. Tonight I've been listening to Talk 05, with Diana Varma. Apart from being very attractive and having a great smile, she is clearly very knowledgeable about her subject, and she's an excellent communicator. One of the issues she addressed was the tiny printing on some products, often pharmaceuticals, and that reminded me that, as an original Englishman (and I suspect the same is true of you as a German) I find the North American practice of using UPPER CASE fonts tor a lot of product information to be very annoying. I find it difficult to read, especially in small font sizes, and it doesn't do its job of communicating very well at all. Clearly designers know about this issue, because most highway signs, which need to communicate very quickly, are in upper/lower case; I find that, in some places where only upper case is used, it takes me longer to read and absorb the information on the sign. I wonder why that is. Of course, it's nothing to do with the size of the font, but there must be some other psychological effect at work.
@PimpmyType3 ай бұрын
Thanks for your comment, Nigel! You are right by your observation. All caps text is harder to read because it shapes less distinct words compared to mixed case. It is only a long rectangle by its outline. Ascenders and descenders create a more distinct word shape. And since we read in jumps and recognize these word shapes, it is easier with mixed case. We also discuss the science of reading in my conversation with Eleni Beveratou kzbin.infooaj7aItkj14?si=_ImaIrqau1A91a2h

@PimpmyType4 ай бұрын
Depends on the times 😅. Well it might work when you use in very different roles. The close the weight and position are, the more challenging it could be, since both are linear sans-serif typefaces, but Montserrat is geometric and Open Sans is dynamic.

I'm guessing Martian would be classified as a Rational Linear Sans under the Font Matrix. What about Mulish though? I don't see much of a diagonal stress, but the descenders of the ‘g’ and ‘y’ do have a bit of an organic form. So is it a Dynamic Linear Sans?
@PimpmyType5 ай бұрын
Yes, 💯%! I’d also classify Martian is a rational linear sans-serif, the terminals are cut off a bit though, hence the open apertures. Mulish I would categorize as a geometric linear sans serif. The a, e, g, o almost all circles, very constructed. 😉
@thatscnotk5 ай бұрын
I'm having trouble identifying differentiating characteristics between the Dynamic and Rational Linear Serif examples used in the Matrix from the video. I see the double vs single storied ‘g’ and the lower part of the bowl of the ‘p’ but that's about it. Even the difference in apertures is not huge. Basically I don't see much of a diagonal stress in the Dynamic Linear Serif.
@PimpmyType5 ай бұрын
You’re right, it’s not that easy to spot. The angle is very, very subtle. The apertures are more of a hint here. The more open they are, the more you can assume it’s dynamic when looking at e or a. The more closed they are, the more rational it might be. Hope that helps a bit?
