I got a cheap copy off ebay years ago that always crashes at the kakariko well cutscene with sheik during the storm. Might be another point to investigate if anyones looking

Read this, in case you wondering how to trigger DJMax anti-piracy. The PSP games over Portable International, made a check on the read speed to ensure that the loading times are equivalent to a UMD. How so? UMD tends to make some delays (some loading are faster, some other slower) and if it notices some delays during the loading, the game is legit and it runs fine. But if the game detects that every loading times are always faster with no delays, the game is pirated and it will start to rot itself.

Serious Sam 3 has more Anti-Piracy measures, such: 1.In the fifth level, your camera will lock up by lookong at the sky while running in circles, like an idiot. 2.The game fools you by saying that it's saving the game, however it doesn't, or better it does but it's saves damaged files "aka garbage saves" so you're forced to start the game from the beginning if you die. Try beating a pirated copy of Spyro: Year Of The Dragon. It does everything it can to make playing it absolutely horrible and tedious. You randomly lose eggs, Sparks is damaged from getting health meaning you'll spend most of the game with effectively 2hp, crashes galore, and do you wanna know what happens if you tough it out and get to the final boss? The game kicks you back to the starting world, takes away all your progress, and saves over your file, leaving you with nothing.

I've never developed for the n64 (but have for the SNES and GBA), but I find it strange that the game has these measures to detect a functional lockout chip. Does a game program on the N64 have the ability to do that?

Truth about the BLACK HOLE: The infamous "BLACK HOLE" wasn't intended for (big emphasis of that word) pirates. Tomoi Sakae (creator of Gimmick!) had created this scenario to prevent Sunsoft from removing his name during the intro sequence, or the players couldn't complete an "IMPERFECT VERSION" (original name of the black hoke) of the game. However, this scenario was a failure, since they managed to remove Sakae name from the intro. However they code was left out. Akito Takeuchi (Super Pitfall II/Atlantis no Nazo creator) renamed the "IMPERFECT VERSION" screen to "BLACK HOLE" to make a reference on SPII/ANN 42th zone.

Oh, devs have sought some serious revenge on pirates. They've gone so far as to put out pirated copies themselves but with OS/file destroying viruses. The type that will slowly corrupt everything while also infecting every executable it can access. Of course they don't just admit to this though. 😅

Does anyone remember which game actually did spoil the end like this? I can't remember now but there was a game that did this. A pirated copy would work but certain aspects made the game less fun, much much harder, and then if you did make it to the end you were abruptly thwarted with failure. Maybe even save file corruption? 😆 Edit - I think I remember that it even gave a message like, "Stealing games isn't okay!"

The game came out in 1998. The internet was trash, and the methods for transferring digital data from physical media to physical media were immensely cumbersome. I'm almost 100% confident there were no Anti-Piracy measures taken back on the n64 days.
