Wow, glad I just found this. Great work ! Why do credits appear multiple times, especially before completing levels ? Caused by your recording hotkeys, or something ? (And also, how to display it ? Pressing "ctrl-alt-space-Q" didn't give me any result on my original Moktar)

No hotkeys. From: ttf.mine.nu/secrets.htm "Similar to the above, but more useful: press LeftCtrl+LeftAlt+Q instead. At first sight there is no difference to W, however if you have at least ten extra bonuses, they will be converted to an extra life! Just like happens normally after completing a level. This way, extra bonuses are useful in the same level where you find them! (credits to the OpenTitus team for this one)." So you don't have to wait at the end of the level for convertion extra bonuses into lives, you can do it much faster manualy.

@@speedylff5217 Thanks for answering so fast. I just noticed it was in your non-100%'s description, and can confirm this feature just wasn't available on the original game (Moktar), which is the version I always knew/played with, since I'm actually french. (btw, I grabbed a TTF version to check for it, and Ctrl-Alt-Q works normally) I also note I have 2 different codes for lvl 2&5. The weird exploit about this seems TTF-specific. (or related to some version ? Picked mine up on Abandonia, and it includes at least a trainer, so I'd kinda question this version :p) -- Also, strategy wise, your runs look near-perfect, but I'm puzzled with the choice of not grabbing one object to shoot the drunkard at the very start of lvl 4. Is the jump that safe, and the "boost" from getting one bottle hit really worth this risk (this did cost you like 3 seconds, on your 14:32 run xD)

@speedylff5217 8 ай бұрын
@@balmipour Very interesting, we didn't know that Ctrl-Alt-Q doesn't work in some versions of TTF. It seems that some versions will be faster than others. We also weren't sure if the codes for level 2 and level 5 are always the same, and there was almost no conversation about this on the discord channel www.speedrun.com/titus/forums/xsax0. We know that codes are generated differently for different hardware devices, but all players was using the same DOSBoxcc]. Starting at level 4 is easy and if you are focused, it will succeed 99.9% of the time. Overall, I tried to show a way to move through the levels in closer to optimal way than safe way. As you can see from the number of reported results on speedrun.com, no one plays this game, so you can afford to make a lot of mistakes.

@@speedylff5217 Indeed, the hit trick looks easier xD I'll check the keypresses and try it (just out of curiosity, wont run on a game so masterfully done anyway) For the links : 1) Looks like I forgot pasting the one with the intro screen in my previous comment. Edited & fixed now. (video is loud & laggy, but my other links were missing the launch screen) 2) The links of all levels are posted in this same video, just as a separate comment. Maybe YT just skipped giving a 2nd notification. Extra question : is it well known that padlocks make you reappear at the place you were when you grabbed them ? (and not at the place where they actually stand ?) I just died to grabbing the one in the spike pit of level 9 (bottom path, 1st pit after ghost / 2 scorpions / fakir) from the pit side, and reappearing over the spikes instead of the platform :p This also made me understand why the padlock at lighthouse entrance (Moktar lvl 12, removed in TTF) was usually deadly, but not always : picked-up from the right, it's actually ok. ... do people know about this ? (I doubt this could enable any new exploit, but hey... who knows :p)

5:43 Very cool minor trick, didn't knew that you can keep walking to left without falling off the fast moving platform. The bat skip improvement is also pretty nice, by remaining in smaller space it is slightly more easier to get to the bat and reducing randomness, although based on your other new video it also need a good flying rng. Also I notice that you didn't jump diagonally to the right while on the bat to move closer to the goal, which you did last time. Is it for safety reason or something else? Overall, very solid and optimized run. Congrats!

Thx! hmmm, I don't know if I don't understand something or if I don't know something. What do you mean about diagonal jump? In most cases the bat goes up, and we can help it go right a bit by jumping and hitting its left side. But I can't do it repetitively. What's your suggestion?

Oh nevermind. After checking back the video, I did see that you do tap repeatedly to the right while doing the bat skip. ОК, first of all, awesome job and I enjoyed watching this !! Secondly, as a person who has done speedruns on very few things and has only played this game a long ass time ago for a little bit I need to ask some questions. Why do you take some bonuses and at times it seems like you almost go out of your way to do it, but you ignore lives and you straight up avoid other bonus point items. like 5:49 you ignore the 1ups and then you jump over the foods in the icy caverns
@speedylff5217

Thanks. I don't collect extra lives because we don't die in the run. If gathering a extra live slows down the run (because of longer path), then I try not to do it. Also I try not to collect additional items, because at the end of each level, each collected item (as long as there was no death after the collection) falls into the pot, and it takes time, so it is not worth doing it.

It was known for many years that there was a teleport there, but it was too far away because you cannot reach it with a normal jump. It's interesting, although this level looks what it looks like, maybe there was no time to finish this level or a wrong game file was included because there are some telepores that lead nowhere: pre2.mine.nu/levels/level7.png

ha that is neat to see the really weird scrolling in this version exploited for faster completion! what puzzles me about this is that some of the weird areas you accessed through glitchy behavior look like the game intends for you to go them. like the grabbable items outside the pipe and where you place the spring on top of the magic lamp thing. Like the level designers realized this was possible and instead of fixing it just gave a reason to do it. The amiga version also has a half speed toggle implemented that seems to come from a similar mindset of "oops the game doesn't quite work, might as well embrace it."

Hmmm. I'm contemplating to reject this run and consider the L2-L5 skip an emulator bug. Reasoning: Fox computes its level codes based on hardware. By chance, all 0.74-x Dosboxen simulate hardware that prompts Fox to duplicate the L2 code for L5 and prefer L5. But on real DOS machines, this is extremely unlikely. If we take the real DOS hardware as the gold standard (typical in speedrunning), then the L2-L5 skip is not possible: The L2 code lamp will take you back to L2. Thus: Even though Fox has this code duplication bug, and bugs should be exploited wherever possible for faster times, this particular bug is practically unexploitable on a real machine. It's a hard decision. Thanks for testing on different Dosboxen; the problem is still elsewhere. :-) What do you think? No matter how we decide, we must clarify the rules of Any% Code. By the written rule "Complete levels 1-7", this run already doesn't qualify. But it's so true to the spirit to skip with code lamps wherever possible, that this emulator-dependent L2-L5 skip must be clearly allowed/disallowed in the rules.

@@speedylff5217 I agree, a separate category is good. Running Fox via Dosbox is the most common solution, other people might stumble on this warp. This will keep all runs valid even when the runner doesn't know about the subtleties of the code generation algorithm.

@@simonn4411 I don't like it. This game generates codes specific for each machine based on BIOS ROM itself. It reads beginning of ROM and uses it as a seed for it's algorithm. It should be possible to alter BIOS in such a way that LEVEL 1 code would be the same as final one. This should be doable on real PC with just software solution. It might be even possible to find a real BIOS that has same issues. This just shows that accepting this DOSBox only trick leads to tons of other issues. I would really like to see a speedrun without codes, even TAS would be great. Just to see how fast it can be done without exploiting such bugs.

Congrats on improving the theory by a solid minute! Input display is excellent for documentation of the new tech. Level 3: I'm most surprised how far leftwards the bottle thrower's hitbox reaches, enough so that we can kill him with a spring uptoss. Level 5: The spring tech seems to be two separate tricks that go together: Extra-high bounce, and grabbing the spring during the same bounce without losing height. Both look frame-perfect. I wonder why no previous runner (mysoft64bits, SalamiOrs, Covert_Madness, and I) found the extra-high spring bounce before -- in hindsight, it looks straightforward enough so that somebody should have stumbled on it at least by accident! Level 4: Sticking throwables into the wall without bonk is a complete novelty. This makes the second clip highly viable. Level 5: Grabbing the boss as a fast main strat, nice. I've merely used that as fallback. It looks safe enough to make it a main strat. Level 6: Again extra-high bounce on the bowling ball. You must have serious practice with this trick. According to your flight path, you seem expect the extra-high bounce to succeed first-try. Level 8: Daring to leave all 3 flies alive. In 2017, I concluded that the 3-fly pattern was too volatile to leave all 3 alive; killing 1 makes for a very predictable pattern of the remaining 2. For completeness, I should reinvestigate leaving all 3 flies alive. Level 9: Fast ladder descent! Complete novelty. I've known the Korean Mummy Strat (tiptoe to avoid triggering the walking mummy) for at least two years, and never got a run with it. Happy that we have a run on the boards that shows it. Level 10: Good timing without waiting for any scorpion cycle on the first two towers. You're confident that you got the first part of the level completely correct. Level 11 bonk to fly high: The TAS ideas had this, but I've always considered it too risky for RTA. Does it save enough (over fetching an extra crate) to warrant the extra risk? Level 13: Ctrl+Alt+Q to convert extra bonuses into lives instantly, did you find this yourself or was it documented anywhere? Level 14: I like to hop onto the carpet only with a small hop, to avoid falling through the carpet.

- "Level 10: Good timing without waiting for any scorpion cycle on the first two towers. You're confident that you got the first part of the level completely correct." I prepared for two possibilities: the first - when at the beginning of the level the first jump is successful (it was successful in the run); in the second, when the first jump fails and the fox runs late towards the scorpions. For the second strategy, the transition through the scorpions is easier, but slower. - "Level 11 bonk to fly high: The TAS ideas had this, but I've always considered it too risky for RTA. Does it save enough (over fetching an extra crate) to warrant the extra risk?" I never measure what is the time difference between these strategies. I saw this in the TAS run and I love it. Sometimes jump is not high enough and then if you are lucky enemy is still alive, so you can have extra try. - "Level 13: Ctrl+Alt+Q to convert extra bonuses into lives instantly, did you find this yourself or was it documented anywhere?" I found this here: ttf.mine.nu/secrets.htm "Similar to the above, but more useful: press LeftCtrl+LeftAlt+Q instead.
