How nice to see St. Michael's in all its resplendent Christmas glory. And how very magnanimous of you, Jon, to support the local charities whilst wolfing down the baked delectables. Loved the Gingerbread House competition - great local talents...the St. Michael's Lighthouse gets my vote, though it was truly a challenging decision. A Free Adult Beverage is JLew's prize from the Hunt for the Snowflakes? What a surprise! The house tours, even though time consuming, are a highlight of one's visit, as are the period costume carolers. However, the lighted boat parade is a unique festivity. When you have a chance, you should visit Annapolis and enjoy that city's lighted boat parade as well, in addition to all the Christmas activities. The War of 1812 story is one for the ages, with so much history and culture. St. Michaels is a really great place to visit any time of year, although one should keep in mind one's preference of seafood for the best personal time to visit. And, agreed: one needs more than one day to enjoy all the festive activities - a good thing there is no shortage of quaint hotels and bed-and-breakfasts in all the small towns within driving distance on the Eastern Shore. Thanks for sharing. You are truly becoming Holiday Jet-setters: Washington State, Iceland, and Maryland all in the matter of a month's time! Methinks it's time for a bit of rest and relaxation, complete with adult beverages, for the Holidays! Merry Christmas to JLew Travels. Cheers!

@Mark723 of course I like to support the local community. Even if I have to make a scarifice and eat or drink something 🤣. All kidding aside, we enjoyed St Michaels and it was our first time there. We will need to go back and explore more of the town. Annapolis is a great town and we should feature them. Maybe go out on a boat when it is a little bit warmer. We have been making the most of the holiday celebrations for sure and we have a small break which is nice. Happy Holidays and thanks for watching!!!

I first visited Longwood Gardens when I was twelve years old. i suggest visiting in the warm weather months. While the Holiday decorations are festive, nothing comes close to the seasonal delights beginning in spring. It is a beautiful part of Pennsylvania. I would also recommend Garvin Gardens in Hot Springs, Arkansas.

Christmas Markets in Iceland! One generally doesn’t think of Iceland for a Christmas Market, but what a great suggestion. Fried onions on a hot dog - what an inspiration. I think this may be the only way to eat a hot dog in future, though it may get some strange looks at the ballpark. Christmas Chai and Mulled Wine - what an enjoyable way to experience a Christmas Market. And the indoor Market where one can cozy up in the lounge with a hot beverage next to a wood fire sounds just the ticket. The park was quite lovely with all the lights, wooden creatures, and Hidden Folk. That Ice-Slide adventure was a hoot! Even the videographer was amused. Let’s hope that Santa was not taking notes after Jon’s infamous trial run. Methinks I agree with Andrea: that longer Ice-Slide was defiantly the Black Diamond run. Any country the residents of which gift books on Christmas Eve is to be praised…and envied. So much culture in such a compact places. Such an amazing country! And if Gryla ever needs a few extra babies to boil in her cauldron, I might know of a few. Thanks for sharing all the traditions and folklore. As always, kudos to the filmmaker. Merry Christmas!

We enjoyed the Christmas markets, and we agree that most people do not think of Iceland having Christmas markets. The Iceland markets are small, but it was much more about folklore for Christmas in Iceland. I think Andrea probably thought the ice slide was the most memorable moment from our adventure as she was dying from laughter. Thanks for watching, and Happy Holidays! 🎄

Nice, I thought the outdoor lighting was sparce last year, I felt they were holding back on the WOW Factor last year for this years new addition. This years new addition doesn't knock my socks off as advertised. Its not COLORFUL. Now they went low rent on the area near the meadow? 🎉 Wonder why they are holding back on outdoor lights. But they sure wanna sell Eggnog or Cider.😮 In Years past All the Trees Even the darn PARKING LOT were always lite up amazingly Since I was a Kid. You know they used to light Christmas 🎄 up FULLY. They charge full price for less lights. Id rather eat at SOVANA BISTRO beforehand. Than drop more $ there or in the gift shop.

We agree that this year missed the wow, especially by the meadows and outdoor gardens. There was a high fire risk given the fall drought so that seemed to be the reason when we asked, but we missed exploring outside. And yes, the new west conservatory isn’t colorful, but we keep saying YET. We are going to head back in the spring and see how things look. They definitely moved the lights to draw people closer to the new space, but we felt like the flow was gone and crowds bottlenecked in too many spaces. We still love Longwood though! Thanks for watching.

Who is this man pretending to be Jon Lew whilst sporting such a spiffy Christmas Cardigan...? I am so used to Grizzly Adams presenting these videos. That Porter Music Box just screams Victorian Christmas - how wonderful! So do the DuPont House Christmas Trees, right down to the colors. The Garden Railway is the wonderment of Longwood Gardens. The East Conservatory is resplendent in its snowcover along with those gorgeous Christmas trees and flowers. The Ballroom masquerading as the Hall of Trees is truly the centerpiece of Longwood during the Festive Season, especially with the trees covered in bespoke ornaments from the various local Arts Organizations. The Bonsai display will forever be a highlight of Longwood Gardens, and the Icicle Tokonoma is the Crown Jewel of the Holidays. The Conservatories, the Holiday Fountain Show, the New 1906 Restaurant (not surprised that libations were ordered seconds after you were seated - well done y'all) - the menu scroll was brilliantly helpful, as was the inclusion of the dishes ordered. The only thing better than all the above, is all the above at night. Such a beautiful experience. Thanks for sharing this wonderful experience. Kudos, as always, to the excellent camera work. Cheers!

Do you think arriving at 12:30 and staying until 6/6:30 would be too much time at the gardens? How long would a first time visitor spend to see the displays? Unfortunately, I didn’t book early enough and I want to see it at night but I’d have to go early just in order to get in.
@JLewTravels
@JLewTravels 2 ай бұрын
@slothsliketohang if you are going around Christmas time, you may be there longer than 6:30pm because they have beautiful Christmas lights. There is a lot to see as the property is huge and you can enjoy a casual meal as you are there. So you can break up the day and just take it at a leisure pace. We always like seeing everything in the day as well as in the evening as it is a different experience with daytime vs night time. I do not think it will be too much time and be prepared to possibly being there longer.

The National Apple Harvest Festival! Truly a great day out. Glad to see you include this fun venue in your travels - perfect for an autumn outing. You have the right of it: arrive early! It’s been about ten years since I last visited, but at that time one could not drive up and park right at the Festival’s gates; rather, free parking was offered in a nearby field and busses provided shuttle service between the parking lot and the Festival, which was not really a reasonable walking distance. As the number of busses are limited, the line would get rather long at peak times. Definitely arrive early to avoid this at beginning of the day. At the day’s end, however, it’s hit-or-miss depending upon how many people decide to leave at the same time as one wishes to depart. I am so old as to remember the day when one could actually drive right up and park at the Festival’s entrance. Good times way back in the day. Back-in-the-day was so long ago that the orchard bus tours were offered via hay-ride tractors, where participants were able to offload partway through the tour and pick an apple from a tree (the fabled Jonathan apple always being a Festival favorite). Methinks this would not work well with today’s crowds. Nonetheless, it is fascinating to see how the apple trees are pruned to maximize apple production in minimal space. Unless things have changed, the “fresh” apple cider being produced using the old-time press is not the cider for sale - the cider for sale is pasteurized, by law. However (sorry for some many back-in-the-day stories), back in the day there was a local cider mill here in Maryland (one of many) which allowed customers to bring plastic gallon jugs to fill with freshly pressed cider, where one could watch the cider press in action, pressing down on a completely fresh apple mash, apple skins, seeds, stems and all, with bee juice as well, as the fresh mash bill would attract bees which would be caught in the mashing process. Nonetheless, such cider, was so delicious as it was very fresh; moreover, since it was unprocessed, such cider would “turn” after a week or so, becoming alcoholic. Those were the days! The Build-a-Scarecrow booth and the Native American dance show/procession are new to me, and are welcome additions to the Festival, which seems to be getting bigger with each passing year. The Antique Car show is excellent, and was a true surprise - most car owners are willing to wax eloquent about the history of their cars, a treat for any antique car enthusiast. The Antique Farm Engines/Equipment display is sizable, though I cannot recall if there were any historians and/or representatives to talk about the displays. There were, however, information plaques to explain what was on display. The musical acts are a nice backdrop or can be an enjoyable show to while away a few minutes in musical appreciation. The vendors are plentiful, offering many handmade items of country décor and Americana - always worth a visit, and a great way to take a break from the sun in the vendor tents. Speaking of which: don’t forget the sunscreen, as most of the day will be spent outdoors in the sun. And while everything apple-related is offered for the attendees’ pleasure - Why am I not surprised to see Jon enjoying an apple daiquiri in the midst of all the apple-related madness? - the Kettle Corn stand (if still in residence) is a definite must-see, where one can watch this delicious salty-sweet treat being produced by hand in large copper kettles, just moments before being sold to happy customers. A highly-recommended purchase, especially if one need something to wash down with an apple daiquiri… And, Jon, I had no idea you were so tall - standing menacingly over poor Sam at only five feet. You are tall enough to scare the scarecrow! Thanks for the video and, as always, kudos to the camera person, who, I hope, was also able to partake in the wares of the apple daiquiri stand. Cheers!

@JLewTravels 3 ай бұрын
Great tips as always. We have learned from other festivals to get there early and leave early to avoid lines getting to the shuttle. The daiquiri was delicious and felt refreshing on a warm day like we had. You cannot go wrong with any apple treat there. I do not remember if we saw a kettle corn stand, but that sounds like a good food option as well if it is there. I am glad you enjoyed the video. Thanks for watching!
