Hey Appalachia, do not fret about dead trees. It happens for a variety of reasons I lost a Fukien tee tree I bought in a bonsai nursery one was 45 years old. That was due to not paying attention to it during a heavy rainy season. Lost another 45-year-old ficus tree which I also bought it a bonsai nursery. Bonsai nursery equals big prices. I lost that due to a hard freeze that came before Thanksgiving. I had a greenhouse 10 yards from this bonsai. Still have guilt feelings from that stuff . Don’t give up it happens and you’ll learn from the experience. Specific reasons kill kill bonsai so Research one and go to the next reason. Don’t give up.

Hello Appalachia, watched your channel for a while now and enjoy your content. Don’t know if you have a vid where you’ve introduced your Catahoulas hound dogs. That would be a plus if you did lots of dog lovers out here I live in Northwest Central Florida and bought all of the material needed to go out in a swamp and collect Cypress. Just haven’t gotten around to it yet. Thanks for sharing.

Ben, I am new to Bonsai and I am quite taken with Yamadori which seems to be your forte...Tour channel has brought me such great joy and a better understanding/inspiration of so many facets of the Bonsai life...I thank you for that and hope that with time you will be able to re-engage your channel as you have so much to offer to especially those of us just starting our journey...Most importantly though is for you to find that all encompassing passion again...The thing that drove you to such heights within the Bonsai community...You need to do this for yourself and find that inner inspiration/love for the hobby again...Until that time, I know I will be eagerly awaiting your return...If you don't return, know that your legacy of sharing of information has inspired so many followers...Find peace my friend...Thanks for sharing your journey...Sequim, WA...

From a novice perspective, I like the double fused trunk which makes this tree unique and not like so many of the cookie-cutter, assemble-line Bonsai trees...Your Yamadori trees stand out a unique which seems to be your Forte in the first place...Expose it as a feature...Thanks for sharing...

Really enjoying your videos and Yamadori collected specimens which is the way I best like collecting although I'm a bit jealous of all the trees available to you. I'm a novice, so your information is excellent and hopefully I will develop a better eye for collecting Yamadori...Thanks for sharing...

I would have happily paid a few grand for the tree you started with I thought it was beautifully unique and imperfect. I think it’s a bigger gamble with the finished piece it’s less likely to survive imho and it looks fake which of course it is

The upside of your loss is that you can use what you’ve learned in order to make your remaining trees stronger.

I doubt that i`d do a thing I`m about to ask... but can`t help wondering if it would be possible to carve out a buddha (for example) figure out of this three and keep it alive like that.

I understand the feeling as I too have had trees die on me. I too was told that killing bonsai trees is the price you pay for learning the craft. I took a break from KZbin and video making… About a month ago I returned to caring and working on my neglected trees and also started making videos. Enjoy your well deserved break.

I know this is an old video, but there is one additional error that was not corrected. Turface is NOT Leca, it is calcined clay. Leca is expanded clay, they are two different things.

I live in Scotland and I once regretted using glazed pots about six years ago. I lost seven trees all at once because of them! The roots were cold, wet, and rotted. I'm using unglazed pots now and it's made a world of difference. However, what you think is a shallow pot, just step up a size and make your pot level height very limited, like two to three years reduced in pot height. Scotland is very cold and wet most of the time, so the plastic bonsai training pots are also a godsend for my training stock. As for glazed pots, I refuse point-blank to plant anything in one today! I know it's hard, but it does get better when your other trees need your loving. Don't forget them! Keep your chin up!

He could have kept a lot of the man secondary branches and just pruned the foliage. It would have help the tanuki make it more realistic since you're making jin out of the actual tree

“documenting my trees and my process seems to get in the way of my trees and my process” In science, the observer effect is the disturbance of an observed system by the act of observation. Most popularly discussed in chemistry when referring to electron observation (observing an electron requires photon interaction, which changes the path of the electron itself)

Anything worth doing is hard, it hurts on a gutteral level. Take your time and go see a bonsai show somewhere, you'll be back atit in no time. ❤

My family is collecting a run of English hawthorns to allow native Washington hawthorns to repopulate. Super curious on what techniques you’re using to work with these tree. I found using tourniquet on big roots close the trunk really help a ton to get a lot more young roots in the root ball.

Dude I’m late to the game but wanted to send condolences for your trees. If your passion for them didn’t burn so bright, their demise wouldn’t be so painful. Bring us back in after you have recovered and are ready.
