Nice. I'm not telling you, but asking you if you let more branches grow from the bottom, would it develops more taper? Or just scar up the trunk? Or maybe a sacrifice branch somewhere. Ah! That's why I don't do bonsai any more. But you are tweeking my interest.
@AppalachianBonsai6 жыл бұрын
Those are all options for thickening up trunks and adding taper. I kinda like the way this one is right now! Reminds me of a tall tulip poplar.

hello.. nice job! Question: Can I dig up a Japanese Maple ( approx. 3-4' high) in my garden and plant as you did to grow indoors (NYC)? Thanks Joe
@AppalachianBonsai5 жыл бұрын
Sadly, Japanese maples cannot survive growing indoors. They are a temperate zone tree that requires all of the season, including winter. Our indoor environments are like deserts, which is why tropicals, cacti, orchids, and succulents do well. If you bring a maple indoors for more than a few days, you run the risk of killing it.

Just recently found you and subbed. I have watched your vids and would be interested in where you purchase your supplies.(update: found your soil info) wire and pots? I am new to bonsai and don't have lots of money to invest. I am doing the "poor" bonsai techniques :) I'm in Ohio
@AppalachianBonsai5 жыл бұрын
I totally get it. That's how I started, too. I began with regular nursery cans cut in half for my pots. I eventually joined a club where I was able to buy nicer pots cheap during our annual auctions, but I didn't have a true bonsai pot for several years. As I've grown in the hobby, I've been able to justify a few pots a year. But, I still have trees in training that are in cutoff nursery cans. Wire was purchased online (go for aluminum, it's cheaper and I use a lot of it). Not having money was the reason I started collecting local materials and used cheap nursery plants (hence the cans). You can absolutely do it on a budget, and I will recommend it if you're just getting started. Bonsai is long-game, and you've got all the time in the world to acquire nicer things as you grow with your trees. I think the struggle makes the nicer things all that much sweeter! Lots of good clubs in Ohio. Search around and ask questions. You got this!
@CurrenCyPhWorld6 жыл бұрын
Thats a good looking tree now...hope to see more of it in the future... its not a big deal if your uploads are a little bit late... we understand that you are schooling right now....but still you can manage editing those videos... goodjob keep it up...BTW those root systems are very healthy... Im sure this will become one of your best bonsai trees..☺ Happy New Year !!!

Ok......not to start a flame war but here goes: (takes a deep breath) is turface a suitable substitute for akadama?
@AppalachianBonsai6 жыл бұрын
No, it's not a substitute, but it still works great if combined with some other things. Nothing all that wrong with akadama except it's expensive and not readily available here. Walter Pall says you can grow bonsai in most anything, even styrofoam pellets if they're the right size and nutrients are provided. I'm just not sure about the color!! Haha! @AppalachianBonsai6 жыл бұрын
@@peterpanagiotatos2852 I buy mine online or at bonsai shows. Check to see what you have local (like a bonsai club, if there's one nearby). Grab the cheapest set you can buy for now, since you're just learning. I use the concave cutters, wire cutters, root cutters, and scissors. All the rest of the tools are normal pliers and kitchen tools you probably already own.

@AppalachianBonsai6 жыл бұрын
Call your local transportation department before you do. Regulations say you're supposed to have cones, and pay permit fees, and more. My local VDOT just says be careful, and if there's a landowner, ask permission. A reflective safety vest never hurts. It adds legitimacy to your good intentions: protection of yourself, protection of others, and respect for the surroundings. Best wishes!
