Wouldn’t it be better to show you filling up your gasoline fueled boat with an actual gasoline hose ( red) rather than the green diesel hose? I know it’s only for demonstration purposes but still. Also you should accentuate the differences from a safety standpoint point between gasoline and diesel.

At 1:37 you can see this Dock Station uses a green hose for their unleaded too. Like you stated, they should use a red hose to not confuse customers.

And….. if you only fill your boat up with 10 gallons you are wasting the time of everyone queuing at the fuel dock. At least wait until the vessel is half empty then brim it. Not so it’s overflowing… just keep regular readings and you will now how much the tank takes. Fill it to a couple of gallons, 10 litres, less than what you calculate to be brim full. Works every time.

From across the pond for us diesel users….. If you’ve got a teak deck near the filler cap then chuck a bucket of salt water over the deck. If you get a spill then the the leaking diesel will flow off the teak and not stain the teak. How environmentally unfriendly I hear you ask. Have you seen the stains diesel can leave on teak……

If people don't have paper charts on board, they are dumb. Electric outage and you are screwed.
@boatus
@boatus 4 күн бұрын
While we generally like to be a little nicer about how we say that, Falney, you're not wrong. And we do still promote having paper charts aboard. The reality is that newer boaters have only known GPS, chartplotters, and nav software on their smart devices. Gone are the days of learning plotting with parallel rules, unless you make an effort to do so. I remember having charts rolled up all around the cabin of our boat growing up -- a good use for the otherwise empty rod holders overhead. While you can no longer order charts from NOAA, they are still available in a variety of places. In addition to being an analog backup when technology fails, they're easier to read and you don't have issues with glare off the screen! Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment!

The comment that says "if the angle is decreasing you could be on a collision course" is wrong!!! It should be "if the angle remains the same you "are" on a collision course. It is the distance that will decrease.

Capt Sarah says "...if you're underway and there's another vessel that is on a constant heading with a decreasing bearing, that often means that you're on a collision course." That is incorrect. A constant BEARING indicates a collision course.

Howdy @boatus, just wondering, would a PAN PAN call be for, say, smoke, but no fire? I'm trying to figure out what level of threat a PAN PAN call would be for.
@boatus
@boatus 13 күн бұрын
EXCELLENT question, Shanie! It all depends on the individual situation. Realistically, in your scenario, it could be either. Mayday is used when you're in a life-threatening situation. [There's smoke and people are trapped/incapacitated/need medical attention.] Pan-pan is the appropriate call to make when you're in a bad situation that isn't life threatening at the moment but could become life threatening. [Your engine is smoking but not on fire, and no one is injured or in grave danger.] Obviously a pan-pan could turn into a Mayday if the situation changes. If you have a VHF with DSC aboard, be sure to request an MMSI number (free for BoatUS Members) and PROGRAM IT IN. Registration and instructions are available at www.BoatUS.com/MMSI

Don't have oxy clean. Can I use comet?
@boatus
@boatus 15 күн бұрын
Thanks for the great question! We would recommend against that for a couple reasons, DBSK4TY. The biggest reason is that Comet contains bleach. Bleach will destroy the stitching in your vinyls. The second reason we recommend using something else is because bleach is highly toxic to aquatic organisms. While a large amount of just about anything can be toxic, there are other products out there that are safer for our waterways. A few years ago, our BoatUS Foundation put "green" cleaners to the test -- both in terms of toxicity, as determined by a University of Maryland laboratory, and effectiveness: www.boatus.com/expert-advice/expert-advice-archive/2019/august/boatus-foundation-puts-green-boat-cleaners-to-the-test

This video has errors and important omissions. To mention a few - bad practice to use flame-source to melt and likely to burn plastic, both crimps should be aligned and not like this video demonstrates - matching the size wire with the stripper hole making sure that no strands of the wire are cut - ensuring the correct style of crimper (and wrong style) and preventing penetration or damage of the waterproof coating - suggesting buying connectors that lined with heat activated adhesive - and lastly a careful inspection of the finished job.

When we first got to our dock, we were told if you can dock here, you can dock anywhere .Not exactly what we wanted to hear. Strong south wind in the afternoon and only being about a half from the ocean right after a bridge. Crazy, crazy current. My best advice is slow is the way to go . Also anyone new to boating slack tide is a great place to start docking to get the feel of things if you are by the ocean. Great advice onAlways look at which way the flag is blowing too.If you are with another person make sure you tell them how they can help you when your docking before you dock.(example,hey Johnny if we get to close to the boat on my drivers side (starboard) give me a slight push off with this paddle. We have 6 lines or ropes we will be tieing up to) anyway have fun out there. Cheers.
