The British office is a better observation of human behaviour. Gervais is a genius and has the extraordinary ability to express multiple layers with his characters. As a result, the British series requires a bit more mental engagement to pick up on the many subtleties (particularly with the human interactions) in the scenes. The American show is just funny and light-hearted. It's far less existential than the UK show but it makes up for its less observational depth with the comedic brilliance of its cast.

Different shows for different... needs. But both entertaining. And I watch them both for the bosses: David Brent and Michael Scott; they make the "The Office" for me.

Yanks don't really get sarcasm, innuendo, irony or multi layers of humour. Decades of of one-liner jokes and canned laughter shows prove this. That's why their version of The Office was a poor substitute and they could never make something like The Royle Family IMHO.

Basically, America can't make copies of our brilliant comedies, so they should just stick to their own comedies. They do actually make some really good comedies, just nothing like ours.

As a testament to how bad the US version is, I myself am an American who believes that the US version is absolutely terrible and a complete bastardization of the UK version, which I’ve laughed out loud watching numerous times

2:07 home alone 2 did the whole swearing thing really well, and its still funny 30 years later. especially the scene with the people thinking they're getting shot at the hotel XD

James Gunn also gave us a better version of Amanda Waller. In David’s movie she looked like a fool. She didn’t look like the intimidating woman she is in comics. In Gunn’s movie she was done better. She was more intimidating. Viola got the character better under Gunn than under Ayer.

The first movie should have been more like the animated movie Batman Assault on Arkham but with Joker as the antagonist. That could have worked. Originally it was supposed to be a live action Justice League Dark movie directed by Guillermo Del Toro. WB had creative differences and canceled it. Then the took the ideas to create the garbage Suicide Squad movie we got.

I agree with you. I didn’t like this version of The Doctor. I actually don’t care to watch Tennant’s return or The Next Doctor. Maybe Capaldi should have regenerated into the Curator instead and retired The Doctor. That might have been more interesting than this version of The Doctor.

I don’t care for Jodi’s Companions. Roni is the only one I like but I have much connection to them.

Her look is similar to Mork from Mork and Mindy.

I like the first episode Jodi goes against The Daleks and the episode where Ace and Teagan returns. Yes I had many problems with Jodi. I hate the addition of The Fugitive Doctor. Don’t mess with the Canon!! WTF!!

American comedy always feels the need to indirectly explain or add to jokes. Especially if they are sarcastic or ironic because that's a more U.K thing and U.S audiences don't het them otherwise. This completely ruins jokes from a U.K perspective.

Agree with most of this but let’s just face it, The Office UK is a masterpiece, the OG real art and the American version is a sitcom. As a USA/UK dual national who prefers the hopeful American attitude, still there is no contest

I think the biggest cultural difference that made the US one not work was that in the UK, the boys were in Sixth Form which is like the inbetween stage between high school and college but in the US they just have the last 2 years of high school and not a separate thing like sixth form so….

Troughton was my favorite Doctor so I'm really put off by any deviation of his looks. Can only stomach the first two Best of the Best.

Difference is one is funny

I just wrapped up watching both shows and I wholeheartedly prefer the American version. It just has so much more content and fleshed out its characters way better. The US Pilot is like the entire first season of the UK Office in one episode. There’s more content, more jokes, more room for character development, and the boss isn’t completely hateable. David Brent is just pathetic lol

If you want the American version of "Faulty Towers"...watch "Newhart."

UK Office earns its jokes and characters. US Office just feels like a silly sitcom. Im sure im biased because i watched the UK one years before the US one existed and i have seen bits of it that are funny I just cant get into it

The thing with the post regeneration formula is the episode start of small in scope, a single house/buidling and gradually grows as we learn more about the new situation that formula doesn't work when you instead put it in a busy chaotic plot driven episode

I've always found it weird how people act partisan with this and feed into the narrative that there is some sort of rivalry between the two projects, and to love one you have to hate the other... Both are fantastic shows in my opinion.

Enjoyed this but I didn't enjoy the copout at the end. You know full well you prefer the original AND that it is better.

As a 15 y/o British girl who watches the US version but has a Dad who loves the UK version, we always have this debate. He insists the British version is better (he may be biased as he loves Ricky Gervais) but for me it’s hands down the US version. I love Michael Scott 😭
