Less than 2 minutes into this video and you pointed out the major flaw in how us beginners get it wrong! I'm getting my guitar out right now to practice this! Thank you!

I SAW ON KZbin WHERE ONE GUITAR INSTRUCTOR SAID YOU CAN STICK YOUR ELBOW OUT WHILE FRETTING ON THE LOWER FRETS. I FOUND THAT TO BE A LOT UNCOMFORTABLE BECAUSE THE FOCUS WAS ON SPREADING THE FINGERS TO REACH OTHER FRETS VERSUS JUST ALLOWING THE HAND TO REST NATURALLY ON THE NECK.
@MARLONdaman
@MARLONdaman 11 ай бұрын
This technique allows you to quit jamming your thumb into the guitar. This technique allows you use your thumb as a rest stop. THIS REDUCES SO MUCH TENSION AS YOU FOLLOW THE NATURAL USE OF YOUR FINGERS, HAND, ARM, AND SHOULDER.
@MARLONdaman
@MARLONdaman 11 ай бұрын
THIS IS SO IMPORTANT BECAUSE I NOTICE THAT SHE IS KEEPING HER FINGERS ALIGNED WITH HER WRIST WHICH ALLOWS HER TO KEEP HER ELBOW IN SND HER SHOULDERS RELAXED FROM TENSION.👈🏿👍🏾

Ah! I'm so glad you found me! And I'm glad I found you! I love that you are documenting your process. That is so valuable for many people. I think a lot of people have unrealistic expectations of what the process will be like, and I often think about encouraging my student's to do this, but that just hasn't reached the top of the list yet. You're doing very well. Many people at this point don't like the sound of their chords, or are having trouble with rhythm, but you're doing great! I'm glad you are practicing with recordings. That's great for your sense of rhythm. The thing is...this is my old channel...I have lots more on my new channel. Here's a link to get you there: kzbin.info/aero/PLpQLlt0LhKj_bscZ66OBluubh35pXuVep&si=3ZsAo97rO3uhrwVd Then look at my other playlists to see if you find anything else helpful. I have subscribed and will like everyone of your videos. I'll share your channel too.😉👍

@@janetbrockman3729 Yes you're 100% right... people's expectations tend to be either wildly overestimated (thinking you can be playing really well within a matter of weeks or months) or underestimated (thinking it's as good as impossible to ever learn)... it's also difficult to see the gradual progress that's been made without visually looking back at a previous version. Thanks for the hook up with your new channel! I'll check it our for sure... you have a fantastic way of explaining & demonstrating things. Much appreciated!!

I’ve tried for weeks now and can’t get even close. My third finger and index cannot get more than 1 and half frets apart. I have very long arms but short stubby fingers. So the only way I can get my arm in enough to my body to do that angle means I can my even see my fingers as I’m holding the guitar away. from my body. The only way I can do it is if I put the guitar on my other knee but then I can’t strum properly?

Although this is now an older video, thank you for the useful tips! I play guitar for about a month now and this helps. However, it makes a huge difference if like yourself have long fingers. The fact that you can reach these chords on a dreadnought with such ease says enough! I have to use a smaller guitar with shorter scale, like a mini jumbo or Parlor. And use proper fretting like you show here. Then it's going ok for more tricky to reach chords.

@@janetbrockman3729 Do you think it’s worth it for me to try again given that I have no talent whatsoever?
@janetbrockman3729
@janetbrockman3729 Жыл бұрын
Yes, I do! I don’t believe in the no talent thing. Everyone is born with the ability to learn to play music just like everyone is born with the ability to speak. The problem is that our society has evolved in such a way that most music instruction is not designed to provide basic beginner level development, so folks who happen to get that in childhood appear to be “talented” and others appear to “not have what it takes” but you can develop those basic skills with proper instruction. If you are interested, go to my website and email me and we can continue the discussion. I will not try to make a sale. I’ll just try to help you if you want to try again. You can get some idea of my philosophy by poking around my website: www.everyonecanjam.com
