Happy new year. I'm a new subscriber and look forward to checking out your channel. I grow hardy tropicals so may well take a few plant tips. I couldn't keep tetrapanax alive in sw Wales. Must just be me. 😅
@montongarden16 күн бұрын
Thanks for the sub! Regarding Tetrapanax, it depends on what type you have, if it’s true Rex, it will be fine but so many plants are sold as Rex and are standard form which isn’t as hardy
@GardenMyselfHappy16 күн бұрын
@montongarden that may explan my issues. They were both young too. I've got a greenhouse now so was considering trying a few things I've lost in the past. It's just so wet here rather than proper cold. Though we saw -10 winter 2023.
@montongarden15 күн бұрын
@@GardenMyselfHappy hunt down a true Rex, make sure you see a o tire of the original plant, will be very hardy Even the less hardy plants usually come back each year Steroidal giant is the worse, it lost the growing tip after a light frost

Nice video, looking forward to more updates. Brings back fond memories of Monton. A group of us apprentices used to be in digs there during 1975 - 79 had a few beers in the Blue Bell. Best of luck with the project.

Hi mate I have a sleeper pond roughly the same size as your going to build, your welcome to visit and I can tell you how I built mine, I’m in Warrington not far from Tim’s place cheers
@montongarden16 күн бұрын
That would be great mate, I was going to ask around in order to see if anyone local could give me advice
@craigwaring674217 күн бұрын
I have a 2300 gallon sleeper pond myself with a 1800mm x 800mm window. Get those sleepers laid flat if fitting a big window, to risky. Watch cwd for info on installation, he does good box weld liners and windows. Ideal seal ms290 i used to bond everything, much cheaper than than most.
@montongarden16 күн бұрын
Hi, I probably watched all the CWD videos! Already decided to lay them flat, will try and do an update tonight on what we are changing
@Robbo-7117 күн бұрын
I found the most important thing running a nexus 220 is getting the flow rate right. I run mine at around 5900 litres/hr.Good luck with the build just subbed 👍
@montongarden17 күн бұрын
Thanks for the sub! Yes, that’s something I’m aware of, so any information like that is always going to be helpful
@stephencottrell249517 күн бұрын
Great your asking for advice, I had a sleeper pond built the same as your going to do, had it rebar also but it did start to bend a bit after time, my advice would be to turn sleepers on flat side and build from there, not only would this be stronger and you can sleep at night but also if you do put a window in it is less likely to shatter, I know you will need more sleepers etc and would cost more but it would be in my opinion a much stronger pond.
@montongarden17 күн бұрын
Thanks for the comment That has been mentioned a couple of times and I’m probably doing to do that now I’ve probably got enough sleepers but the first lot I bought are slightly smaller than the last lot! 200x100 vs 190x90! I can use the smaller one for the filter end and get some more, I need to work it out, but probably only need ten, which is £200 from my supplier, worth it I reckon
@ThePBWay17 күн бұрын
New subscriber 👍🏻 mine is a sleeper built pond. I also run a Nexus 220 I have done for 4 years and it serves me well my water is always clear. I just wish I had added a window onto mine 👍🏻
@montongarden17 күн бұрын
Thanks for the sub’ I keep seeing videos where people say what they would of different Adding a window and making it bigger seem to be the two most common
@ThePBWay17 күн бұрын
@ Both correct. Make it as big as you can, will save you changing it in the future. I would also recommend a bottom drain. Not sure if you mentioned a bottom drain in your video 👍🏻
@montongarden17 күн бұрын
@ yeah, I will be fitting a bottom drain!
@GrahamTaylor12317 күн бұрын
Just come across your build channel and looks like you’ve done some homework 👍 Just one point, instead of a planter at the end consider a veg or bog filter. Not only would it be decorative but functional for extra filtration. Add a blade return will also give more movement to the pond plastic add visual appeal.
@montongarden17 күн бұрын
Hi, thanks for the comment I did consider using it as a filter area, but decided to plant in a way that fits with the rest of the garden And, we will return from either the nexus (split into two) or the skimmer into a blade, will be in side opposite window. I’ll add to my next update Thanks
@Brand-Family-Koi-Adventures17 күн бұрын
Hi mate just gave you a sub nout wrong with the nexus mate had mine for 12 years tried and tested great filter looking forward to the rest of ur build content
@montongarden17 күн бұрын
Thanks for the sub! Yeah, they seem to be a popular filter, always going to be those who disagree, but plenty have them working well
@Jiggskoi17 күн бұрын
Just subbed 👍😉 I like the idea of having planters incorporated into the pond maybe turn 1 in to a planted veg filter to increase biological bacteria the nexus 220 are cracking filters just lack the bio I look forward to watching your build and hope it all goes well 👍
@montongarden17 күн бұрын
Thanks for the comment I will consider that or increase bio’ filtration with additional filter off the skimmer!
@edenkoipond19 күн бұрын
New subscriber 😊 Great video and brilliant to hear your plans. At the sizes you mention, think hard about the nexus 220. Ideally you want to go up to a 320 or (I know it’s what they all say) a drum. With your sleepers, to belt and brace, you could think of putting strategic sleepers in as uprights, particularly either side of the window. You only get one chance to get it right so cover every eventuality. Best wishes 👍🏼
@montongarden18 күн бұрын
Thanks for the comment, really appreciate it Our initial pond size would have been fine with the 220, so I know with the increase in size, I’m going to have to increase the filtration

Your established section looks really good. I think certain types of evergreen also helps create a more dense looking winter jungle effect - tighter clumping bamboos and Trachys, rather than the more open scheffleras and spreading bamboos
@montongarden21 күн бұрын
I plant schefflera in groups that way it creates a more dense planting when combined with low growing evergreens Most of them are still fairly small, hopefully they will get much taller
@YorkshireTropics22 күн бұрын
Happy New Year mate. Great video, I love how many Schefflera you have in the garden, they're going to look epic in a few years. I picked up a couple of Alpina on your recommendation back on your open day
@montongarden21 күн бұрын
Happy new year, yes, lots of Schefflera, you probably saw I prefer to plant them in groups as well instead of single specimens, although I do have them planted as singles in some beds Alpina is one of the best for me
@JamesQuinn-w3k23 күн бұрын
Hey. Great videos. You seem to have more scheffleras than most. I’m gathering a few myself and am tempted to grow them in a narrow strip beside the house. What your thoughts about their roots beside a house?
@montongarden21 күн бұрын
They can get big! I’m not sure about the roots on them, not got any really big Schefflera in the garden
@junglejaponica23 күн бұрын
those beds are going to look epic in a few years
@montongarden21 күн бұрын
Yes, and I’ve not finished yet, there will be a few more alpina going in, planting big groups of plants that are normally used as single specimen plants is the way forward for me, but it can be costly so it takes a while!

@montongarden2 ай бұрын
Hi, thanks for the comment! Is the Rodgersia in a pot? I assumed it was, it’s perfectly hardy, but as with any plant, you should always try and avoid a pot freezing solid should it get very very cold, to do that, just bring it into a sheltered spot against the house

Or put it in your shed!
