It has been a very dry start to the year on the West Coast. Looking at Hokitika, it's only seen about 14% of it's usual January rainfall so far this year. There will be some rain that moves up the coast on Thursday.

I recommend NZ build inter-basin transfer dam on the west side of the South island. Then feed the water to the east side through tunnels and water ways. Then NZ can establish various agriculture and/or water consuming manufacturing industries there.

why are nights cold with global warming???????????
@MetServiceNZКүн бұрын
Kia ora, It has been a very cold start to year, thanks to the persistence of cold air coming up from the south. Even with a generally warming trend (2024 was globally the warmest on record) we can still see colder periods of weather. Temperatures this week are set to return to something more January like.

What a dry run it has been in Hamilton - just 9mm of rain reported so far in January (average for the time of year is 77mm!) A few showers for you on Friday morning but I think the next real rain will be later on Saturday.

Massive cold blast from the south, tells me that for this time of year it should not happen and never has in the past, shows the Antarctic has expanded and no global warming. That it has come all the way to the Waikjato must be bloody cold.
@MetServiceNZ7 күн бұрын
It certainly has been a cold start to the year for us, thanks to the persistence of southerlies that we have been seeing. However, it follows on from globally the warmest year on record wmo.int/media/news/wmo-confirms-2024-warmest-year-record-about-155degc-above-pre-industrial-level This page is also a great tool to compare the amount of sea ice around the Antarctic, which shows a low peak for 2024 nsidc.org/sea-ice-today/sea-ice-tools/charctic-interactive-sea-ice-graph
I appreciate your clear enunciation. Much easier to follow than the usual presenter.

...since when did thunderstorms become a severe weather warning? That means by those standards we on the West Coast of the South Island are living in a permanent natural disaster zone!
@MetServiceNZАй бұрын
Kia ora, you do get your fair share of thunderstorms on the West Coast. Thanks for your question. We issue the Severe Thunderstorm Watch if we are expecting the thunderstorms to bring either: Heavy rain of 25mm/h or more. Large hail of 20mm diameter or more. Strong wind gusts from thunderstorms of 110km/h (60 knots) or more. Damaging tornadoes with wind speeds more than 116km/h (63 knots) - i.e. Fujita F1 or stronger. All these things can bring some dangerous conditions so we try to give people a heads up.

It is nice having some rain for Canterbury today as the province was very dry and I had been concerned about the fire risk. It looks like these next few days are going to be interesting. I hope it will be a little warmer and sunnier going into Christmas ☀️.
@MetServiceNZАй бұрын
It has certainly been dry for a while. It looks like some more rain is likely through the region for the end of the week, especially late Thursday and into Friday which will hopefully give some respite to the high fire risks. Fingers crossed there's some brighter weather for you over the Christmas break. Thanks for watching :)
