Years ago I had a vhs to dvd dubbing deck and I dubbed a vhs tape per the instructions and it looked awful. It was really washed out. Then I tried dubbing the VHS again from another ordinary deck with S-video out and left/right RCA jacks into the DVD recorder side of the original dubbing deck and it looked great so I would guess that the "internal dubbing settings" of the dubbing deck weren't calibrated properly for best results. Either that or the internal dubbing system was just junk.

I received on VHS in VCD quality (288P) on .dat format. It has audio synchronization issues due to frame freezing, slow motion and fast motion in video. I am able to correct it manually by deleting the freezed frames and correction in slow/fast motion. Is it possible to correct the same in any automated way?

i sadly cant get a super vhs player yet but i do have 2 vcrs and a crt tv with one built in

the diamond vc500 has an issue with wobbly edges that other capture cards dont have i would recommend the i-o data gv-usb2 or a dazzle dvc100

ES15 all the way, but if all I had was the Pioneer it can certainly do the job good enough.

Line TBCs are a must, but frame TBCs still pass dropped or inserted frames, but won't cause dropped or inserted frames by the capture card itself. So if your vcr's internal line tbc has a hiccup on a difficult tape, the frame tbc passes it to the capture card, but without losing sync. It's the same with the DMR-ESxx devices... they can drop and insert internally, but the capture card doesn't drop or insert on it's end. I'm currently digitizing Woodstock 99 weekend... all 65 hours. The broadcast itself had signal glitches... the capture card will freak out and insert tons of frames over a split second glitch, but the DMRs pass it as it looks on the tape, but the capture card doesn't even notice. Personally I picked up a Panasonic WJ-AVE5 video mixer... it has it's own frame tbc, and replaces the line tbc... and has an audio VU meter and sliders to boot. It even fixes top edge tearing. All for a fraction of what an actual frame tbc will cost you. And it doesn't mess with the colors like the DMRs.

Unfortunately, buying a used Frame TBC is a big gamble because there is no way of knowing whether it is in perfect working condition. You could be flushing $2000.00 down the toilet.

Is it possible to go from a S-VHS deck to one of these camcorders and then connect to the PC Firewire card? I tried this with my equipment, but both of my camcorders (one is Hi-8 and the other is mini-DV) do not appear to accept a S-VHS input signal. What am I doing wrong?

I feel like the upscaler + hdmi capture card overall is not the best way, but if you are a person who just wants to digitize your vhs tapes its an acceptable way, because some people tend to buy those 15 dollar easycaps and get garbage results. I sadly got tricked to it and bought a hauppauge usb live 2 and it produces veery blocky results, when i bought an upscaler and the hdmi capture card it looked soo much better. So yeah the upscaler + hdmi capture card is not the best way overall, but if you have like 10 vhs tapes its a good way.

I kind of wonder about this 59.9 fps gospel for 29.9 video. Let's say your capture chain actually delivers ~30 half-frames per second. Now, to deinterlace, you're either going Bob (double the scan line in each half-frame to fill the screen and cut your vertical resolution) or Weave (comine/blend the 2 half fields, keeping your vertical resolution but getting combing artifacts and lower temporal resolution). Or a combination of both (bwdiff). But in neither case are you going to create "more" frames than 30. (Yes, I hear some advanced algorithms look across many frames/field and interpolate entirely new frames, these could output more than 30 fps I guess, but it is unclear to me if they are allowed to do so in the processing chains you and I use.) If you crank the frame rate up AFTER the deinterlacer, well, yes, that's maybe going to do temporal interpolation to create new frames, and the increased, synthesized temporal resolution may make motion look better to the eye, but that would be true if that was done to any lower FPS source material. I just did a test with some fast motion video of a pumpkin rolling down a hill (don't ask) and did the scale/deinterlace/frame-rate transform with this Perplexity-generated ffmpeg command: ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -vf "bwdif=mode=1:parity=tff:deint=all,scale=1440:1080:flags=lanczos" -r 59.94 -c:v prores_ks -profile:v 3 -vendor apl0 -bits_per_mb 8000 -pix_fmt yuv422p10le -c:a pcm_s16le output.mov Looking at the results in Final Cut with all of its local viewer deinterlacing and field-forcing turned off what I see is a weird repeat of earlier frames, seemingly to "pad" the time. So when the camera is zooming in, looking at it frame by frame, I see it go in-out-in-out-in-out. Mind you, it looks fine running "at speed." But doing a simple upscale without frame rate change the zoom just goes in-in-in-in as you'd expect. And to my eye looks no different, and maybe better than the 60 fps version. I get that, intuitively, giving the deinterlacer double the frame rate room to "spread out" seems logical, but I don't think the deinterlace filters we commonly use do that, or, if we use an exotic deinterlacer like VapourSynth that might want to create new frames (I don't know if it actually does) if it would be allowed to do so since framerate conversion and deinterlacing are separate, isolated blocks in our processing chain. Right now, for me, I don't see enough (or any) difference between 29.97 and 59.94 to justify the massive increase in the size of my Prores 422 intermediate files. But I'm interested to know where my thinking has gone wrong since so many people seem to swear by this 60 fps mantra.

Converting internally to DV depends on the Digital8 camera model. Some most definitely do, while others have diagrams suggesting those do not. Thus the general advice is to avoid Digital8 as Hi8 players, for this reason. Too variable, unknowns, extra work and testing. If you want to deep dive, you can do so. But given that Hi8 cameras are usually cheaper to acquire than Digital8 cameras, it's somewhat moot. Few people have Digital8 tapes, and especially both Hi8 and Digital8, so a need to do both is tiny.

I'm a bit of a old school videophile and have to agree with everything in the video. I do have to say however understand a working svhs player will cost you $250 to $300 on ebay. A tbc will cost you nearly a grand and an svhs player with tbc will cost you a grand and might only come up on ebay once per month. Be careful with professional decks too because some only play tapes recorded in sp speed.

This method is also flawed. You do realize your white balance could be off? That would make something orange turn red. Having said that your DV camcorder may not be color accurate but the ADVC 110 and Intensity Shuttle are. Keep in mind the ADVC 110 and Intensity Shuttle can allow you to see the video while capturing on broadcast quality hardware. Your capture devices cannot do that. Why do you think that is? Do you think professionals would buy the Canopus and Blackmagic Design products if they were not color accurate and made orange items turn red? Most people bought products like the ADVC 110 and Intensity Shuttle so they could playback video to professional broadcast compliant hardware for accurate color correction. Do you see my point? You have to connect the Hi-8 camcorder into your TV. You then capture the Hi tape using your Firwewire DV camcorder. You then place the DV-25 video file into the Premiere Pro timeline and output back to your TV using the Intensity Shuttle or the ADVC 110. You will notice Premiere Pro, the ADVC 110 and the Intensity Shuttle are color accurate. The red, orange, blue, yellow, green, etc. will look identical. My video that you watched demonstrated this. You proved it doesn't matter No one cares. no one will ever ask while watching the converted video, how it got there, this is Karen nitpicking, Its like audiophiles and the cable wars. no correct wrong or right answer, as long as it works. no obvious loss of detail, TBC good, suspect color differences?? you have to fight to prove which one is correct??? and then the silliness of judging via YT via my monitor? just like audiophiles auditioning expensive loudspeakers they will never afford via a YT through their headphones.

In my opinion, you can mess with software like Hybrid all you want, but it's not terribly helpful when upscaling. I get better results using TOPAZ Video AI for upscaling. On another note, NEVER delete your original (native) 720 x 480 captured video files. There will be more AI algorithms arriving in the future that will be even better when upscaling your original video than what we've seen up to now. So, your native standard definition files are like having "digital negatives." When you want to re-purpose the file in the future, using newer and better tools, you'll be able to work from the original capture files.

ALWAYS press play on the VCR and let it run for a few seconds BEFORE you start recording in VideoDub. Very important!

Great video as usual! I think the only way you can test for accuracy is to output a known pattern such as 75% NTSC color bars and look at the captured files with a software-based vectorscope. I’d say use a test pattern DVD as the source, but you won’t really know that the DVD player colors are accurate without a hardware vectorscope. Dedicated pattern generators are rarely going to be off by much, so it’s probably safe to assume it’s accurate enough for these testing purposes. It’s also possible that the advc110 is more accurate than the Sony conversion chips, so both TechTVusa and you could be right. I will say in the other comparisons I’ve seen, usually color accuracy isn’t the difference seen between ADVC110-captured-DV and other cards, so it could be a Sony-DV-chip specific thing.

Can you actually set HUE in the service menu on the D8 camcorder? This is a purely rhetorical question, as this is normally done with software, but a German TV station once broadcasted with maximum color offset for Betacam SP Playback, because they forgot to adjust the Y-delay after repairing a Sony DVW-A500P.

To me, the AIW, CRT and the LCD monitor look the same. The DV playback is what looks over exposed to me.
