Nice video though a critical missing step not shown is how was the purfling binding channels cut on the top, particularly the area where the bevel is?
@GabiM3112
@GabiM3112 17 күн бұрын
If you watch closely, you see, that with this method, you DON'T cut a channel at the bevel, only at the rest of the guitar top, as you would do on any other guitar without a bevel. That's not any different from cutting a binding channel, you just adjust the depth and hight for the cut. For the bevel part you cut the top to shape before glueing it on and then you directly add the purfling. Depending on the depth of the purfling, you may have to feed some wood under it to make it level with the the top (which I had to do in this case). Next to the purfling, you add the sacrificial wood on which the veneer sits.

Not a fan of arm bevels even though I have a strat. One famous guitarist , Ian Moss uses strats made by Greg Fryer of Sydney , Australia and he has his strat bodies like a Telecaster, no cutaways for the stomach nor an arm bevel. Greg Fryer was the first person to take Brian May's Red Special apart for restoration ( and built him three more guitars ( John, Paul and George) for Brian. Curious what people like. I like a Telecaster Flat guitar and even my Gretsch is a flat top dou jet flat shape like a Les Paul.. Also prefer a LP Jr. to an arch top. Each to his own. Love your videos and learn a great deal. BTW I can Suggest you view his performance of the Ray caharles Song " Georgia" on youtube. Type Ian Moss : "Georgia". P.s. Uour guitars sound so good right after their builds. Peace.

It must be cold in Germany Gabriele, I t's the first time I've seeen you work with gloves. BTW I always like the sound of your guitars. I am a builder myself in Australia. A small independent operation like you. It's getting costly to make the customer what they want and I go thriough every detail of that with them ( and do not charge $15,000 like that pommy English girl). I work out a price with the customer that covers my costs, makes me a little, but most importantly they get the guitar they want. Always learn from you, Cheers from Downunder.
@GabiM3112
@GabiM3112 Ай бұрын
The gloves are because of the heat from the freshly steamed wood and when taking it out of the steambox, some protection is required. ;-)

I cut out the side profiles with a router and a profile template before bending them. Have you tried this method? Do you see any problems with it?
@GabiM3112
@GabiM3112 Ай бұрын
No, I haven't and I do see problems for my workflow since you don't have much room to wiggle around. I also use the straight edge of the sides to line them up with my bending jig, so that I can make as sure as possible that the sides are not "twisted" and aligned parallelly, if that makes sense. Others do it, though, and they are doing fine with it.

Just a touch of feedback here....slotted or not the string ball never rests on the end of the pin but does rest along side the pin and against the bridge plate......60 years talking here.
@GabiM3112
@GabiM3112 Ай бұрын
I know that but it does sit more on the plate proportionally (in relation to the normal case) when you slot the bridge and use unslotted pins. For me personally, the difference is not significant enough to do that on my guitars. It's just that the owner wanted it that way and there are some who demonstrate a noticeable difference. See Driftwood guitars on that matter. But again: for me, it's good enough to have a good break angle.
@user-nn9go6tj3b
@user-nn9go6tj3b Ай бұрын
OK Got it....just recently I bought some ebony pins and didn't see they were not slotted.....so I slotted them! I think it's a cleaner job without bridge slots....BTW a middle ground is T Woodford sometimes makes a string groove in the bridge to get a better break angle when the saddle is getting low.
@GabiM3112
@GabiM3112 Ай бұрын
That's what I do, even if the saddle doesn't go too low.

I'm just a beginner making guitars, but I've somehow adopted ,from all the youtube videos, a lot of your methods. Your fancy bridge clamp has my attention except I like pyramid bridges so some kind of caul is needed so the pyramids don't get dented. I also put my frets in like you do....why cut them first?!! I also put the back joint reinforcing strips in after the braces are in place. I think I will shape the braces before I put these in so there's no bump to run into. I will be watching!
