Great review and you have a lovely voice. I tested on a store just before was on sell and was really nice to hold and had very fast focus with a few lens I tried zoom and prime lens. I may consider going back to Nikon, I have Fuji system as well Sony. Fuji after I tried the sony a few years ago it's on my self more and more lacking the fine detail I have on Sony and the high dynamic range Sony it's underfull on a lot a things but lacks on color. Sony is getting to expensive on every lens and new cameras. I Subscribed

I think it's great that people are finding the joy in doing this at home. If I had any comment at all it's that you're handling the negative a lot both when you're putting it on the reel and when removing it again, especially when it's wet. I always used the reels that you can oscillate back and forth so at least on 35mm you can do it essentially without touching the surface of the neg at any time. You can get rubber squeegees for removing water and even then you have to be super-careful about keeping them scrupulously clean.

To get the most out of this camera you need a summicron lens on it, if you shoot Voigtlander lenses, shoot a Voigtlander camera .

I love HP5 but it's way too expensive for beginners. I wouldn't recommend b&w for beginning at all. Because of all of the CineStill kits color it's actually easier to develop at home than black and white is. If you're developing yourself you're probably scanning yourself, And if you're scanning yourself you can just click monochrome in whatever software you're using and I know that's a hot take. But I'm a color photographer so take my opinion with a grain of salt. The only time I shoot black and white is when there isn't any color in the subject.

That was my first black and white film to shoot. I grew up with point and shoot cameras but we only used color film back then. There were no settings on the camera that you could change other than to turn on the built in flash. And those didn't come along until later. We had to use disposable flashes before that. I think I've shot 3 rolls of HP5? I know at least 2 rolls. I don't like it. It's too grainy for me. I've seen others use it in my 35mm fb group and get better results. I liked Kentmere 100 more than the HP5+. But so far I like Kodak Tmax 100 the most. I do have a roll of FP 4 and a roll of Delta 100 I haven't tried yet. And I recently just bought a roll of Rollei 400 retro I want to try. One good thing about HP 5 is that you can shoot it at 1600 and push it 2 stops.

Setting a different iso is under-overexpose not push/ pull the film. Experienced shooters will of course underand but for beginners it should be clear, many got confused.

HP5 has become quite expensive. I bulk roll Fomapan 100 which I shoot at iso 400 and home develop using stand development to keep the grain in check. The contrast is closer to Tri-X than what you get out of HP5. HP5 is great, don't get me wrong but man it's double the cost, sometimes more compared to bulk loading Fomapan 100

HP5 is great, at 35mm i almost exclusively shoot it at 800, I actually can't rememeber the lsst time i ever shot it at 400 honestly. Sometimes even do mix 800 and 1600 on the same roll and stand develop it, amazing versatility. I now just buy it 100 ft bulk, worth every penny.

yes Tilly, for 120 you get 16/12/10/8/6/4 frames a roll depending on format, the previous numbers are for 6x4.5 through 6x17 formats (the 6x17 is rare, only Fuji GX617's and a few others), 6x12 is a panoramic format, of which sinars and a few other makers of 120 backs for LF monorail cameras use; 6x9 is fairly common (mamiya press & Super23 use this format), and the others are reasonably commonplace, Hasselblads, Bronica, Mamiya & Rolleiflex all use these in various model ranges of their cameras.
@andyvan5692

one thing Tilly, HP5 is great for HIGH ASA's but NOT low you can develop at 250/200/100/50 but only for an image {Perceptol for 9-11 minutes}, basically a "first aid" to get something, NOT at full sharpness, etc. which is what Ilfosol 3 gives you, AKA the developer in the "simplicity" kit, in a one shot packet, so this is beginner friendly in a way, that these simplicity chemicals, and the 'beginner' developing kits can process it, but as its a 400asa you still need to 'know the light' as glare and flare can still give you gremlins in the shots. one colour beginner film I can recommend is Kodak Gold 200 I use it in MF in both Hasselblad 500s and LF [sinar F2 in 6x12 format with 120] you still need lens hoods to protect against highlights, flare etc. but otherwise a great landscape and building shoot film as greens and reds go well, not as well with skin tones (as Portra 160/400) but good enough to start with.

I used to buy FP4 and HP5 because it was a little cheaper than Plus and Tri-X. I was always happy with the Ilford product. As tired as I am of seeing B&H commercials on KZbin, they’re still awesome. Haven’t had a bad experience with them in decades. I admire your desire to shoot and process film. It can be so much fun.

Owning a number of rangefinders, including the M4, I would strongly advise people to find out if they will enjoy shooting with rangefinders, because it is quite a different system. I personally find them much inferior to SLR's so it makes the Leica experience a little less magical for me than it has been for you - of course it also depends on the type of photography you are interested in. They are a pretty good investment though.
@andyvan5692

robustness?, one warning here Tilly, these are Delicate objects, the rangefinder prism, and mirrors can be dislodged and 'collimation' of the system lost, needing a re-calibration, whereas most slr cameras calibrate focus with shims in the lens mount, adjusting helicoid tube to mount distance, easier to do, and to fix diy, than a rangefinder re-calibration, which needs more tools, and optics to test it, etc. ; just an opinion, plenty of people love rangefinders, even the Fuji X100 style digital ones, or the Leica M 10's etc. just informing people there is one caveat to using them, like a telescope, you need to handle them carefully, as they are precision equipment, finely tuned to do their jobs well.

Nice! You do have an eye wash bottle ready, right? This is a really great dedicated darkroom. If you do go the enlarger route, it's fairly simple to lightseal the room. You have enough room and up until a couple years ago enlargers were dirt cheap, often free (now, thanks to filmies like you who ADVERTISE, those free enlargers are harder to find...thanks! 🙂) I have spent many, many years of my life in B&W and color darkrooms both hobby and professional. That meditative darkness where I can just sense the movement of the Graflex and hear the faint buzz of the ionizer in the air gun is something I truly miss. Keep up the great work - you're a wonderful photog and have a nice practice.

Nice review. I hope you do a new review as the firmware update this month has fixed the auto exposure issue. As for your other points, I have a slightly different take. The **Polaroid I-2** is regarded as an excellent camera, especially among instant film aficionados, for several key reasons: ### 1. **Manual Controls** - The I-2 is Polaroid's first camera with full manual control options, including aperture, shutter speed, and ISO settings. This allows photographers to fine-tune their shots and achieve more creative results, giving it a significant advantage over simpler point-and-shoot instant cameras. ### 2. **Autofocus Lens** - It features a high-quality 3-lens autofocus system, which results in sharper, more professional-looking images compared to many other instant cameras. The autofocus system makes the I-2 more versatile, particularly in low-light situations or when capturing subjects at varying distances. ### 3. **Compatibility with Different Polaroid Film Types** - The I-2 can use multiple types of Polaroid film, including i-Type, 600, and SX-70 films. This flexibility makes it appealing to photographers who want to experiment with different looks and formats. ### 4. **Excellent Build Quality** - The Polaroid I-2 has a premium build, offering a sturdy and well-constructed body. It feels more substantial and professional than many other instant cameras, enhancing its appeal for more serious photographers. ### 5. **Metering and Exposure Precision** - The camera’s built-in light meter allows for more accurate exposures, which is a big draw for those who want better control over their instant photography. This level of precision in exposure control is rare in instant cameras. --- ### Why Polaroid Film is Preferred by Many Instant Film Aficionados 1. **Larger Format and Impact** - Polaroid film, especially in its traditional formats like 600 or SX-70, offers larger prints than Fuji Instax. The size of Polaroid prints gives them a more impactful, gallery-like feel, which appeals to photographers looking for artistic expression. 2. **Unique Color Palette** - Polaroid film has a distinctive color profile, often producing softer, pastel-like tones with unique color shifts, especially when using vintage or expired film. This unpredictability and organic feel are highly valued by those seeking artistic or nostalgic photos. 3. **Vintage Aesthetic and Texture** - The imperfections, graininess, and occasional light leaks in Polaroid film are seen as a feature rather than a flaw. These characteristics create an authentic, vintage aesthetic that many photographers appreciate for its artistic potential. 4. **Connection to Photographic History** - Polaroid film carries a rich history in photography, and using it feels like a connection to the roots of instant photography. For many, it’s more than just the image-it's about the experience of creating something tactile and unique. 5. **Artistic Imperfections** - While Instax film is known for its consistency and reliability, Polaroid film is loved for its "happy accidents"-the variability and imperfections that can give each shot a one-of-a-kind character. Many instant film aficionados embrace these flaws as part of the creative process. The **Polaroid I-2**, combined with the artistic qualities of Polaroid film, offers a unique blend of control and unpredictability, making it a favorite for serious instant photographers who value both craftsmanship and creativity.

I own the M6 TTL and while yes, I do love everything about it except the slow flash sync, I love my Bessa R4A even more. The Voigtlander is just a more functional camera with a higher flash sync speed. If I shot less indoors, I would be totally happy with the M6 or any other Leica.

I now own a Leica M6 Titanium by pure chance as I purchase a £20 prize draw ticket in a draw run by Leica Hunter Competitions in the UK. Would I have bought an M6 or any other Leica if I hadn't have won this one ... Urmmm, definitely not 🤔 . The reason I say this is that I have a wide range of cameras (Lumix, Canon, Ricoh, Olympus, Yashica) at my disposal, and the Leica would not be the first camera that I'd grab if heading out to take fast grab shots, and it certainly would be classed as my everyday carry like some Leica owners would claim. The camera thst I'd be most carry nearly every day (since buying digital) would be a my either my Lumix LX7 or Canon S120 compact cameras, and either a my Lumix GF1 or Canon M50 if needing to use primes etc. I own full frame Canons bodies, but find them being used less and less over the last few years. The M6 is just a nice trinket that happens to feel nice when using it, but it's also a frustratingly slow camera to use, but it will stay with me and the lenses can be used on my Micro Four Thirds and Canon M bodies if I feel like a bit of fun.

I also love the analog M cameras. However, there are many reasons why I usually pick up another of my cameras. 1. The rangefinder mechanism is fragile and is easily knocked out of allignment. 2. It is too expensive to bring in potentially dangerous areas, like a big American city. 3. Film is quite expensive. 4. The Ms are quite heavy compared to e.g. a Rollei 35 or a Leica X1. 5. Lack of autofocus makes it less than ideal for people photography.
