Chasing The Shot: 100 MILE Gravel Bike Race

This video is about my experience shooting my first gravel bike race. With only seconds to capture a rider passing by, the adrenaline of getting "the shot" has me excited for the next race. There is an easter egg at the end, enjoy!

Having shot many bike races myself I am so impressed with how well you captured the race. Shooting a bike race is a daunting challenge unlike any other discipline in photograph. I know exactly that feeling when you've captured a magical moment in a bike race and deliver the print to the bike racer. The feeling is just magical and your image lives on.

You did a really good job of capturing the action and atmosphere. Even the shots that didn't turn out, communicate this as well. I recently did my first event photography for a memorial motorcycle ride. I usually do more methodical landscape and nature photography, so the experience got me try out doing something faster paced for change. I'm also a cyclist myself. I love gravel riding! I really want to see what kind of work you do with bike race photography in the future. Many photographers have made entire careers out of photographing bike races.

Tilly - as an EU person, visiting America is not a common visit for me - but! Later this year I'm coming to NYC for a gig, and staying for a whole week! I love city photography, however, previously, I've only done it on DSLR. I have a film camera, and I *REALLY* want to shoot on film (aswell as taking my DSLR for a bit of comfort!) - I would really love to know what your recommendation might be in terms of film for my first time shooting 35mm in the big city?

Black and white is very forgiving and captures NYC very well. I would say buy inexpensive b&w film and shoot with the intention of capturing moments that are important/memorable to you. I love Ilford HP5, but prices have gone up on that one, so maybe try Kentmere 400. Hope you have a great trip!
