I dont think it's a charitable view to generalise the entire "West" just based on some airline experiences... The West alone is made up of many different countries with different cultures. It's like someone having a poor experience in a Chinese airline, then proceed to criticise the service standards of "Asia" as a whole (which by the way includes Singapore and SIA). I think generalisations like this reveal how little personal interactions and friendships we share with people from cultures which are foreign to us (the Western cultures in this case) - all the more important it is then to watch out for our own biases.

I was from a neighbourhood primary school which had many students from low income and broken families. and then i went on to cedar girls'. i must say the stark contrast between both schools was astounding. many of my classmates in cedar came from "non-neighbourhood" primary schools and lived such sheltered lives. they had no idea about how people in other social classes lived at all. and i will never forget when a group of them one day sat down and they were all discussing buying the latest iphone when every single one of them was already using an iphone in good condition. not to mention the never-ending stream of cars coming in every morning and in the evenings too with so many students waiting to get picked up by their parents. one girl didn't even know how to go home on her own via public transport because she's so used to having her mum be her chauffeur.

I have always questioned myself why schools here have such a long school breaks on June and year ends? Why can't we have longer breaks during festival that close to our culture? Like 10 days breaks during Chinese Year, Hari Raya, Deepavali etc? and deduct from June and Year end. In my personal belief MOE do not dare to upset the "Elite" on their travel quest. What I have suggested can give more time and chances to all races to understand our diverse culture background. Family can still choose to travel out, but schools, institutions and the state must create activities to foster these relationships. Another problem here is what @jeremyliew1916 mention, we are waiting for someone that dare to speak up and make that change. LKY ever mention some like, a bitter medicine that is good for the nation will not satisfy everyone.

Hi Viswa, try applying some whitening cream on yourself and make it thick, before you approach those white buggers. They're pretty thick in their heads. That’s why when LKY faced those white paparazzi in his heydays, he gives them no face.

I think you have lumped the poor service from western airlines with the authors of western books. That’s generalisation and labelling. Surely you realise the oft-used labelling tactic has drowned out many useful points during arguments in Singapore too

My favourite is Lover's Tears by Sandy Lam and Dick Lee. When he contacted her about the song, she ignored him because she did not know him. By chance, when they met face to face, he repeated his request and she recalled it and agreed. Dick Lee is one of the best Singaporeans. He is hardworking in achieving his results yet moderate in his thoughts and actions. And he has retired gracefully. He has the noble traits of Singaporeans.

Oh, you mean all of their officers behaved like that to everyone? Look, I think its time we got the idea they have poor service but their own peopl are not complaining. Maybe their service is a deliberate, thought-out, artificial efforts but our Asian subsevient servitude is in our blood, and we can hardly write a manual about how to do what comes natually to us. Take a Europe flight ten times and tell us again. You did mention, the stewardess got it for you. Why were yo standing close enough to be touched in the first place?

The artists stood with the heartlanders and won hands down against the elitism of the day. Good English doesn’t mean it’s bad Singlish or bad English, the people know when to use our local lingo. Now that Singlish is found in the Dictionary it makes it acceptable. Learning Singlish is both an art and science

Thank you for doing this interview. Dick Lee has tried to find the Singapore identify when he was a teenager. I didn't know his song was banned because of Singlish, pardon me for my language, what a shame! At that time, we are not confident enough "to be ourselves". Even today, many people still poke fun at Singlish and say that it is rude to use it to speak to foreigners and things like that. 'Home' comes naturally as a national song even it's lyrics do not contain a word of 'Singapore' unlike 'standup for Singapore'. I strongly agreed with Dick Lee 's view. Don't try to create one let it happen naturally! We will find our folk song naturally and unknowingly as we gather and sing together! Thank you Dick Lee. I am very touched, because you help us to find our identity.
