Do you have some sort of oscilloscope? Either a used analog unit from the 1980s or one of the modern things off Amazon would help, so long as it gives you a couple megaherz of bandwidth. Most I have seen go to 10MHz. Also, if you haven't done so, Adrian's Digital Basement here on KZbin may be worth checking out for getting some ideas on what to look for. Every so often, he'll do a vintage computer repair, often a C64, and in those he talks about how to troubleshoot.

Scope is on order! Really enjoy ADB I learned the touch for hot chips from him need to dig in his older videos now that you mention it. Thanks for the ideas.

You should get a dead test cart and an inexpensive oscilloscope. Dead test will allow you to do a test without the ROMs (in case those are bad) and will also let you know if you have one more more bad DRAM chips (or a memory related LS logic chip). Oscilloscope will let you check the reset pin on the CPU and check data and address lines for correct voltages. Black screen with a white line means you're generating a good clock signal. Clock circuitry and VicII are probably good. PLA tested and good. Feel the chips to see if any are getting very hot...Esp those DRAM chips with the red dots. Your kernel ROM has a red dot, too. Looked like the LS logic chip next to the top row of DRAM to the right of the resistor pack has a red dot, too.

My best friend in High School in the mid 80's got a Pet. His dad paid $3k for it and thought he got a bargain. It was never used as they couldn't get it to so much as it had almost no software and getting anything he wanted was impossible. No games, just business programs. I think it got put away withing a couple months. His dad was very wealthy and in the Lebanese Mafia so money was no object. Even had a shop which was a front. Why they didn't buy a new computer, who knows. A new one would have been $4k back then. Mine cost $3500, equivalent to a 286 AT.

The Sony cassette deck wil probably need new belts and you should also clean the record/playback switches. The volume pots don't work because they are strictly for RECORD level adjustment.

3:10 It looks like a record/playback switch problem... And by 4:00 The problem may be gone. Ah, too bad. You will have to do some serious work to get this SONY to come back to life. When it was released around 1972, it was a premium deck, with the ferrite and ferrite heads. Later... I can't decide whether you are playing dumb, whatever... AFC stands for Automatic Frequency Control. Unlike AGC, which every tuner has, AFC circuits apply to FM only, and are a correlation circuit that locks in on the cleanest phase differential out of the detector, and holds that position, allowing the radio to become mistuned without affecting performance. Best practice is to tune the signal with AFC off, and then switch it on. General observations on these low-price receiver 8-track sets? They may only offer a few watts, but with efficient speakers, all of these receivers should provide more than adequate volume levels. That YORX unit looks to be a closet prestige unit, and if I had it, I'd be tempted to use it as a front end, with the loudspeaker outputs feeding directly into a high power amplifier. Don't worry about what you may perceive to be an impedance mismatch. There is never a problem going from low to high impedances, the opposite is not true. Good luck.
@highshelfrich Жыл бұрын
Thank you great notes and advice! Seriously I have no idea what I am doing most of the time but like to learn and try things which is what is happening. Just finished bashing the two Lloyds into one unit that is functioning (do need a new belt for the 8Track). Will be checking into the tape player soon.

@@highshelfrich Hey, good luck with what could become a very interesting hobby. I think that the best approach you can take if you want to increase your knowledge of electronics. I often watch KZbin repair videos, and there are some really good electronics restorers. Mr. Caldeira, Mr. Carlson, Shango066, Dave Tipton, banderservtv, Jordan Pier, and many more. As for me? It has been many years, but I fabricated bespoke electronic equipment to order, until other obligations forced me to refuse anything other than music-related projects. My final client was a recording studio that required extremely silent vacuum tube microphone preamplifiers. That was 24 channels, and required six cabinets, plus the power supply. What is a cabinet? Some call it a rack mount chassis, one that is installed in an EIA equipment rack. I have decided to subscribe to your channel. I may give you advice and hints, but this is your learning curve.
