this doesn’t work. I tried exactly what he described and external microphone does not come up. (2015 Macbook Pro) what does work is a TRRS to double TRRS splitter IT HAS TO BE ALL TRRS (4 pole) it will come up as external microphone in the system preferences. And it will pass external microphone audio. But it WILL NOT record in Garageband or Logic Pro. The best option is to buy a simple class compliant USB audio device. The little one with the green and the pink ports this will record external microphone audio everywhere

Thank you, Ron! I got the TRRS plug and the two adaptors for the mic and headsets and it actually recognizes the mic but no sound yet, I tried two different mics and that doesn't seem to be the problem. Any recommendation? I'd appreciate it!

Hi Ron I am facing the same issue but I have just one question - What is the port of your headphone is it TRS(3 sections) only like a mic? Because I have a mic with TRS (3 sections) and headphones with TRRS (4 sections), for me my macbook air 2020 is not recognising the external device.

It sounds right and should work, but I still couldn't make it work on my desktop iMac Retina.

why is the connected microphone recognized as an external microphone + external headphones?

I do the same but I get the problem, when I connect only the microphone, the macbook automatically switches to "external headphones" even though they are not connected.

Well explained. My question is, why can't I hear my microphone from the MacBook speakers? There is no output from the microphone, yet the speakers will work when KZbin is running. Do I need a splitter as you showed?
