Nice video! I have one question: Is it possible to hear or visualize the sounds that animals hear? For example, I know dogs can hear a whistle that humans cannot. What can I use to see the sound of this whistle?

Hi There, Technically you would need a microphone and AD convertors that go up into the range they hear. You would also need a spectrum analyzer that goes up that high. This would give you a graph of the tone and harmonics. I am sure this exists for labs.

Thank you,this video can help people save unnecessary expense.For those who doens't use SPL meter for professional purpose(This is my situaiton.I'm considering to choose a SPL meter recently and have done some research,so far as I know,professional meter are centification required and cost a lot of money way beyond I have imagined),mobile app is adequate.I went to a park this moring,there is an outdoor dashborad which display noise level around,I took out my mobile phone and check the SPL meter app,the figure they show is almost the same.The only thing you should do is to find a good enough free app(support manual calibration is better,if you're going to a buy a professional SPL meter sooner or later).

2 reasons I can think of for the SPL meter are 1. iPhone mics may degrade overtime and accuracy may change. Hard to be confident on results without comparing to the SPL meter overtime. 2. The SPL meter is dedicated so you can leave in place to check levels in a studio setting.

I usually record my acoustic in my vocal booth. Very dead room. Is this too dead of an environment for acoustic? Do want a little room sound?
@SmithMediaSolutions
@SmithMediaSolutions 3 ай бұрын
That is a great question. Including room tone is a taste decision, not a right or wrong decision. I tend towards recording acoustic guitars with less room tone rather than having a lot of room tone. If I want room tone I would usually record a room mic and add some reverb to the room mic. This way I can control it in the mix.

I'm a one man band home recording musician as a hobby. The #1 problem with music is the dichotomy of how it takes incredible amounts of money to create professional level music, but it's impossible to make any money at it, except for the truly exceptional, very fortunate few. My next biggest problem is, although I'm as good of a singer and songwriter as anybody out there, if not better, I cannot find an audience. You can be the next Paul McCartney and people won't appreciate. I spent serious money to make a You Tube video and practically nobody cared.

This video is not so much about using an SM57 on the kick as it is about processing a kick track. You didn't you even bother to show the vastly different sounds you can get just by moving the mic around.
@SmithMediaSolutions

I found that as I improved my mic pres that massive difference of moving the sm57 around was tamed. What pres are you using with your 57's?
@poxcr
@poxcr 5 ай бұрын
@@SmithMediaSolutions What are you talking about? Simply pointing a mic straight at the beater vs towards an area of the head between the beater and the rim yields two completely different sounds. Moving ANY mic around inside a kick drum has a massive impact on the sound you're picking up no matter which preamps are used.

Why would you record it like that. It sounds like a sample, plug in or a nord. There's no sparkle in the sound. Get rid of all the baffles around the amp and turn it up, add a bit of reverb (3-5) Use a DI with a thru for an amp and DI as well. Then you can re-amp if you want to add different fx. (Echo, wah, modulation, filter etc). I would say your aiming to get a sound like you hear on classic 70s records. You've done the hard work, you've bought the rhodes and the Deluxe. A decent large condenser is good for capturing the deluxe too

Why is it always about kids learning? I think you're leaving out a large sector of the older models who want to learn, or refresh themselves. They often have the money to lay down and maybe they just want to do it to keep their brains engaged. Maybe we're a dying breed with all the younger gens following the EDM stuff, but I'd like to think that there will be a resurgence of people who want to play an actual instrument and/or put their face up to a mic without having everything DAW corrected, and do it for the hell of it, not because they see themselves as the next Chris Cornell, Brad Paisley, Eva Cassidy, or Geddy Lee. They just want to be decent enough to stay in time,eant dynamics, amd have fun with friends. Boy, that was a rant. 😆 Anyway, the whole point was to still make us old dogs feel like we still are, or can be, included - and that includes setting up the backline, and maybe FOH, too. There. 'nuff of that noise.' 😊

Is it accurate at all to just buy a calibrated sound monitor and measure my speakers db in my home? Ive seen a few of them on Amazon in the $30 to $80 range. I have a set of JBL L50's which had a replacement woofer put in by a previous owner, and Id just like to know if its higher or lower than the original woofer specs from the factory in 1979. Thanks.

2520 opamps fail often due to overheating issues. The reason seems to be the epoxy resin the components are cast into. API claims it's for heat dissipation, but it really seems to be prevent engineers to take the opamp apart and reverse engineer it. Actually the resin prevents proper heat dissipation and eventually cooks the electronics. There are good 2520 clones out there, and they don't fail. Hope this helps.

One added bonus of some apps (I use Decibel X) is that you can get one of the graphs to show volume against audio frequency. Using this a white noise test signal should show the same volume at all frequencies, so you can tweak the equaliser settings to get as close to this as your setup permits.

The iPhone jumps around a lot doesn’t mean it’s bad… you played a song, which sounded in wider range. The iPhone is more sensitive and responded faster. That’s a good thing ! In fact the SPL meter is 10-20 years old technology… nobody should be surprised. In fact, Radio shack is mostly out of business…

I'm hoping to get my RE20 and ART Voicechannel tomorrow for use with my amateur radio station primarily on single sideband so very constrained bandwidth up to about 4kHz if I want to use less congested bands. Most use will be up to 2.7kHz. Really looking forward to getting the ART in my comms rack and seeing how it performs. Also gone for the shock (ing price) mount. There is a fair amount of noise from computer fans and other stuff from just behind where I am hoping the mic will go and I'm hoping that noise pickup should be reasonably good. I ummed and ahhd about mic selection as I've not been able to physically test one with my voice - I thought that this would be a better choice over the RE320 as I do have quite a bright voice, have seen nothing but good reviews and given the price tag in the UK of £530 it isn't a small purchase for a secondary project. I'm hoping that I won't be disappointed.
