For me personally the class room reenactment would be more, but that's my own social anxiety speaking.

I have a friend with DID, and a lot of her personalities are characters from a series, and are often different versions of the same characters. If quite interesting i guess. They were a very fun and nice person tho! The front i talk the most with ig. I met a few other sides as well, but it was usually one or two.

Weirdly, even though Ford is a more straightforward depiction of a dissociative disorder, I've always associated Cassie more with DID, simply because of the way that her level is formatted and the way her Archetypes work.

"in a kids game" pprreettyyy sure this game is more oriented towards young adults. Yeah the artstyle is stylized but it basically requires some knowledge of mental to actually understand it. A kid could play it and come out only mildly traumatized, but this game always felt like it was more of a young adult game that COULD be played by kid. And hell some of the shit probably couldn't be figured out by a kid (like idfk the 1st level of psychonauts with the static TV, a lot of kids would get stuck on that)

I totally agree. This is a film I return to a lot. It's so well-written (e.g. It's not like we're hardened criminals here. We're in show business') You nailed it when you said the film is relevant today in a world of social division controlled by the media. However, I think the point about the system hurting the people who have been manipulated (both the contestants and the audience) over the final slo-mo shot of the audience is only half the story for me. Beyond that, it is THE AUDIENCE'S lust for fame and celebrity being represented by the likes of Van Doren and the paradoxical lust for condemnation (in other words, to bring someone up and pull them down) is the most disturbing thing however manipulated we are by the media. This is reflected by the Geritol executive's line 'People didn't tune in to watch a display of intelligence. They just wanted to watch the money'. True, that lust and seductiveness is manipulated by the medium but the question is (as we look at those faces in the audience (and us the cinema audience), what does that say about our behaviour as human beings, of which we have choice over? The naming and shaming of social media usage that has become so commonplace in modern life can be directly related to the questions raised by this movie. So, like you, I agree this is not a historical curiosity about the 'end of innocence' but about today's world and a warning of how much worse it could get, if we allow it to.

Usually, I would say that it makes sense to fire Bob due to the alcoholism, making him unable to do his job, but their job is literally literally helping people with their mental illness, and in the first game, the villain was basically the same thing having mental issues that they fixed and he’s still working there after kidnapping children for their brains

Pretty sure in Psychonauts, one. They explicitly say Ford's mind was shattered. After a fight with someone, they don't name that person. They don't really talk about the event that much.

The level design istelf seeming to try to make you fail the challenges has an interesting connotation, if you ask me. I have both social and general anxiety disorder, and in my experience, when my anxiety acts up, if something isn't going the way that I want it to, then I think someone or something is at fault. Specifically, it means I perceive that something or, more commonly, someone, is actively trying to harm me. This can range from "the computer running slow, so it's mad at me", to "My little sister is getting job interviews and I'm not, so nobody wants me to get good things unless they allow it."

This was a great a very detailed video. But I really expected you and other people to pick up some of the subtext with the prep stations themselves.... they are specificly chosen and they represent different styles of self harm/ suicide, cutting, burning, drowning, and finally a gun to the head (if you dont believe me on the last one find the dark thoughts chain behind the blender) it looks like youre looking down the barrel of a revolver. Also look at the things that come out of the blender they are literal piles of mush. That being said Compton is the last living member of the Senior league and its easily possible that any of these fates could have happened to the other members... But, to acknowledge your point this could definitely be due to the anxieties he is dealing with.

One poignant moment for me is definitely when Bob starts fighting back once the Helmut monster says he never loved him. I've been in a similar situation, not with drinking, but with depression. It's so easy to have a feedback loop of negative thoughts that keep dragging you down with each new hyperbolic what if scenario or worry that the people who care about you actually don't. But, then there can be a point when you have the realization. That moment where you think something so horrible, your rational mind finally speaks up to knock you out of that stupor. Your friends don't hate you, you aren't a lost cause, there's more than one permanent solution to this temporary problem. And it makes sense that the thought of Helmut saying that would snap Bob out of it, he's the one person Bob loves most and hasn't (in his eyes) betrayed him or done him wrong.

An extra large thing to think about Is that Compton has a Psychic ability that specializes in Reading Minds So arguably, his Social Anxiety is way worse than a person without his Psychic Specialty He has the ability to Explode things of course but his Mind reading ability is what messed with him the most

Here's something fascinating that the fandom has been puzzling out for a while now: If you look at the wires connecting the different stations, they tend to end in pillars of blocks. If you look at them, they resemble very closely the blocks-on-wires toys you'd find in a children's area of a doctor's office. To add to it, all of the kitchen equipment is made up of playful, childlike toys (Even in the boss fight, the flapjack flipper and the mixer are both patterned after sharks). Everything has a childlike aesthetic, not just the goat handpuppets. I think some people relate it to Compton's kid, as he's Dogen's grandfather, but we never hear about a wife or partner or a child. It just never comes up. I think there's a lot of interesting material hidden in there, possibly.
@HonestMagpie Жыл бұрын
I love Bob's Bottles so much, due to all the depth and seriousness about it. Something I've found that most don't seem to notice: When Lili asks Raz to find a 'very special fungus', the fungus he picks up appears to be an inkcap-- also known as Tippler's Bane. They're used for curing alcohol addiction (Or can kill you if you have too much alcohol with them). To add to that (and possibly explain why Bob drinks mushroom liquor exclusively), Fungi are neither plant nor animal. Herbaphony -which the Zanottos are famous for- shouldn't work on them.

Great video but there’s a couple word play metaphors here that I loved that I think you missed. 1. The bottles you’re finding the solutions in the bottom of and 2. The seeds representing “root causes” of alcoholism. The many, many sad events that might grow into a problem but when identified and nurtured can turn into something positive.
@misterdonlon Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the findings! Big fan of the seeds symbolizing root causes.

One of the aspects of this level that I found interesting was how easy it was to give Hollis a gambling addiction vs how hard it was to remove it. All it took is one mental connection that gambling could solve all of her current problems to make her an addict, but took 3 different mental connections as well as a battle with the bad idea itself to kick the addiction. Another point that may not have been intentional was that Raz giving her the addiction could be symbolism of peer pressure while him helping her kick it could be symbolism for either interventions or rehab. I'm not married to this idea though but felt it was interesting
