Todd was EXCEPTIONAL, both as an athlete and a person. He was a SMART ballplayer, great sense of humor yet deep down one of the most humble people you want to meet. A tragedy that he is no longer with us, BUT he IS in heaven looking down......Thank You Todd for all the great memories!!

The pride of Henry Sheldon High School, the best athlete before Justin Herbert?
@werther83Ай бұрын
I can't claim to know about all the athletes Sheldon has produced, but I do know Todd was a multi-sport athlete, playing varsity baseball and basketball in addition to football. Throughout the nineties he would return to Sheldon for fundraising events and participate in homerun derbies, batting from the left side of the plate, though he was right-handed.

@@werther83 yeah this game put me on a lot of old school players , Todd could’ve played in todays game and been on Kelce lever with his speed and route running
@werther833 ай бұрын
@@kenniceschaffer3561 Yeah, he was definitely on the cusp of the new age tight end. Kellen Winslow had a couple of seasons before Todd with 80+ catches, then Todd ripped off a string of 4 seasons with 80+. Todd was perhaps a little undersized as a tight end, but deceptively athletic (college running back). He also was good at the game, using his mind. He hated how the draft process emphasized every measurable, and would harp on that during his broadcasting career. He was less concerned with fractions of a second in a 40 time or reps on the bench press than he was with whether a person could play.

I met him him 1983. I was only six he was a kind giant. I asked him if he was my dad as he had my last name and my stepfather did not. He laughed and said no I’m your uncle. “He was not” lol I received one ticket every year and got to see him every game. He gave me one of his practice jerseys. It swallowed me. That jersey hangs in my man cave today. This was a kind man. He needs to be honored in the HOF!!

I think he's built more like a fullback or a linebacker than a tight end, but he makes it work.
@werther83 Жыл бұрын
He played fullback in college, and was drafted as a fullback. He was undersized for a tight end, but was among the first real volume pass-catching threats at the position, because he was a step faster/quicker than the traditional tight end.

Why isn't Todd in the Hall of fame is was one of the best ever tight ends.
@werther832 жыл бұрын
I wish he was in the Hall of Fame! But I'm biased, being one of his sons. He spent the first several years of his career as a backup and on special teams. He was very, very productive as a starter, but his peak was between 82 and 87, and 82 and 87 were strike-shortened years, so he really only had 4 to 5 seasons of peak performance, which many consider not enough. Also, he was something of a difficult personality who alienated some in the media (and elsewhere) which didn't help his chances.

Yes, people who struggle to make ends meet don't have to spend their time thinking about my dad. I guess my point is that when the history of football is discussed (by those who have the time and the inclination), my dad is not as well regarded as I believe he should be. You are free to disagree, and free to not think about my dad at all, if it is a poor use of your time.

Outstanding player and a very interesting man. He almost reminds me of Kelce the way he could find the creases and holes to get open. Wasn't a great smooth athlete like Winslow, he relied on instincts and had great hands. If he was playing today w/ some of these QB's he'd be a 85-100 catch TE. He died way too young and sorry for your loss.

Yeah, he sure liked key lime pie! That's pretty funny, definitely something he would say. I'm not worried about the hall of fame. I understand the arguments for and against. I'm proud of what he achieved regardless, especially because he wasn't a can't-miss athletic talent, he really had to maximize the little he had, and became a 5-time pro bowler in spite of being a tad small and a tad slow.

I was at a Bills and Raiders game back in 1993 in the private boxes and press box section in Buffalo, otherwise known as the luxury suites. It was one of the coolest experiences of my life as I got to be within feet of famous broadcast people and actually got to shake hands with Al Davis, even though I did it on a dare. He was gracious, by the way. Anyhow, Todd was doing the broadcast or NBC I believe, as the color commentator, and I ran into him as I was leaving the restroom and he was going in. I was a nobody, just someone who had a coveted press box pass due to some business friends on that one and only day I ever stepped foot in there. I said hello to him and he could NOT have been nicer. Here's a guy, doing his job, on the way to use the bathroom at halftime and he took a minute to chat with me. He was a tough player and a true man. I was just floored at how cool he was and he spoke to me like I was his buddy. I always admired him as a player with his incredible toughness and how he personified the Raider mystique, and it was a really great moment. Great guy.
