I need to do this tomorrow on my bro's WRX. Thanks! UPDATE: This is definitely the easiest way possible to separate the hub from the knuckle. However there are three notes I want to add to this video (which was awesome by the way). 1) The ball bearings the wrx has are too big to be used and reason for mentioning of using using ball bearings as space fillers from a previous bearing replacement. That'll also assume they're small enough to fit in the hole in the knuckle/hub. I had to take an allen key wrench big enough that it wouldn't fit then grind it round and i cut 2 pieces to use as my filler instead of the ball bearings since i didn't have any lying around. 2) He suggested getting separate bolts to pull the hub but also mentioned you can use the OEM hub bolts (there are 4 of them). I would say this was be required and not an option as the threads will be FKd up when pull it. M12x1.25 and i'd use probably 60+mm length. I ruined the 2 and had to get replacement bolts. 3) Once the huh separates from the knuckle you can hit hub out with hammer (i was using a 10 lb hammer). Mine didn't budge so I cut the hub down to the plate 3 times within 1/2 in of each other to weaken it and a few hits and popped off. Total time took 5 hrs start to finish and included a few parts store trips (twice to autozone and once to tractor supply for bolts).

My question for this is how the hell did you get a drill behind the knuckle to tap those threads in?
@mikejr5504 ай бұрын
Tap it with a tap socket holding the tap and use a 3/8" ratchet. Be careful not to break the tap, use cutting oil and take your time. The hole does not need to be drilled.
@Smithers44 ай бұрын
@@mikejr550 Wish I saw this before I went at it. I ended up putting the tap in a drill and it broke as I was reversing it out. I just ended up using the stuck bit as the "drain plug" and your method worked great. Then it only took a bit of tinkering to get the tap out with some pliers. Not sure if you thought of this on your own or what but its bordering on genius for sure. I tried about 4 other "hacks" and spent hours on each one. Your method took me 20 minutes and thats with me doing the tap incorrectly. Thanks for sharing this with us. I do recommend putting more keywords on your title it was one of the last hacks I could find. Id include some models, and years as this hack will apply to the majority of them. Also include replace and remove, stuck, hack, wheel bearing, as the majority of people will not search removal. Just my 2 cents though.

I would have bet this would have worked. Its a great example of how in many cases it should have. In my case after trying this to no eval, I decided to heat the hub with a torch and shock it with cold water. Then using a drift punch to move it slightly clockwise and counter clock wise. I then used a slide hammer on 1 bolt until it finally broke loose. My problem may have been the 1.5 tap instead of the 1.25 you recommended. Great suggestion though. I would try it again. I hope I dont have to.
