Hi Scott! This video is super helpful but I seem to still be having a problem. I've got all the right cables and I've made sure everything is set as 'allow', my system report says there's a thunderbolt to firewire adapter and that a device is connected, my camera also indicates 'DV in' on the screen but it just won't pick up in iMovie or Quicktime. Time to switch to Mac. I just successfully connected a FireWire 800 to a M-3 MacBook light via an OWC Thunderbolt 2 Dock. Worked the first time without issue. Hasselblad H3D-39 camera tethered via Phocus. ( Hasselblad's free software)

Apparently the firewire adapter is no longer available from Apple, and at least in France, is no longer available from Amazon either.

Ugh I'll just take out my old pc with the firewire card I installed years ago.

Looking at your list it appears a 10th Gen i9 10885h with thunderbolt 3 on Win10 will though yes? I found a laptop with those specs used and wanted your thoughts about it before I buy. I would be at a complete loss right now if it wasn't for the rabbit hole I'm currently in watching your videos and reading the comments. However, I have a few questions after watching several of your videos on connecting firewire devices to newer M1 macs. I'm trying to connect a PreSonus StudioLive 24.4.2 to my 2020 13" M1 MacBook Pro, which is currently running Sonoma 14.1.2, and record in Logic Pro 11.0.1. The PreSonus has two standard 6-pin FireWire 400 outputs on the rear panel. I'm understanding that in the past I potentially could have achieved this by using the method described in this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rmashKx_aLuWjdEsi=PHJw-c7JVUv0CyYI But the FW800 to TB2 adapter has since been discontinued, and the TB3 to TB2 adapter is likely to follow (although it hasn't happened yet as of writing this!) My question is this: I have been seeing some of the FW800 to TB2 being sold on Ebay for ridiculous prices. If I were to purchase the proper adapters, (FW400 to FW800; FW800 to TB2; TB2 to TB3) expensive as they are, would I be able to successfully connect the PreSonus to the my computer to record via Logic? Any tips or knowledge would be greatly appreciated; I'm apprehensive to sink close to $200 on adapters that might not even work. I don't have desk space to follow the old-gen computer method outlined in this tutorial, which is why I'm even wondering if the adapters will work. Cheers!

Firewire 400 is not hot-swappable due to the liklihood of the cable header sparking out the fw chip via shorting the pins out under connector movement... FW800 (1394b) doesn't have this problem.

Hi Scott, thank you for the videos and other technical advice regarding capturing digital8 video on a Windows laptop. I followed your guidance regarding the firewire and thunderbolt connections / cables. And I've followed the guidance regarding the CODEC and software, but my Sony Digital8 camcorder is not recognized by the video transfer apps. I can see my camcorder ("Sony DV Camcorder") in the Device Manager and the info shows it as "working properly" but just isn't recognized by the software apps. It also shows in the Devices & Printers screen as "AV/C Subunit". I'm going to contact Dell support on Monday, but thought you might have some thoughts also. Thanks in advance! Ed

I love that fact that the mass consumer once has access to an Indexed video format cameras which was then pulled off the market and never allowed back into the mass consumer market. Everything since then has to be either Proxied or re encoded to something else. DV and later DVCPRO literally capture and transfer to your computer, edit and export that was it. Since the footage was INDEXED every software editor was able to play, edit and encode without any proxy files. The mass consumer is still waiting for a video Camera, DSLR that was as fast and proxyless as DV.

I was able to convert my mini dv tapes off my camcorder on my MSI gaming cpu by installing a PCIE chip and then firewire to dv. Capturing software WinDV

i have an old early 2013 Macbook pro (which has 2 Thunderbolt inputs on the left side). I was able to import Sony Digital8 Video from my handycam via one of firewire cables you linked and the $150 firewire->thunderbolt 1/2 adapter (wow what a price lol) and OBStudio app (Note: i had installed OpenCore Legacy Patcher to get an updated OS [like Sonomo 14.6] on my old laptop fairly recently. But that probably doesn't matter but thought i'd mention.). I also have Windows laptop (Lenovo W540) but the Thunderbolt input didn't work on there, but there is an optional 'expresscard' slot in that laptop that a $50 startech firewire card from Amazon may work ... EDIT: It did work... but OBStudio recognized the camera but for some reason wasn't able to 'see' the video/audio on Windows when i started recording, but WinDV and ScenalizerLive did (and they both imported around the same size/quality. HDVSplit didn't work at all (maybe as that program is meant for "HDV" format [which some MiniDV tapes i believe i read use vs "DV").). Question: is 8mm/Hi8/Digital8 all fine to do via Firewire, or analog formats like 8mm/Hi8 should be done via S-Video instead? I read something about Analog->Digital conversion on Hi8 not being optimal to get video via FireWire vs Digital->Digital on Digital8 so curious. PS it would be nice for a separate video that just compares the different apps like WinDV, HDVSplit, OBS, ffdshow, Windows Live Essentials 2012?, dvgrab on linux (and the various settings to make sure they pull optimal archival format vs smaller filesize format meant for youtube/IG). Like take the hardware tutorial part out, just assume the user finally figured out a way to connect, but now needs to do the pure software parts

Using an old computer is not a solution. Finding an obscure product that i still made is the solution.

By the way any computer that supports thunderbolt 3 implicitly supports thunderbolt 2. The main difference is the connector shape. There may be some circuit differences, but there's an embedded chip in the thunderbolt 2 to 3 adapter that takes care of those differencess. It's a very tiny chip that sits in the plastic shell that houses one of the connectors, just behind the connector itself. Windows does not need to explicitly support thunderbolt 2 for this to work. Windows only sees the thunderbolt 3 chip in the cable so it has no problem recognizing the cable. That chip translates any commands that are needed to the thunderbolt 2 equivalent command, and then the thunderbolt 2 device only sees the thunderbolt 2 protocol being used, so it thinks it's connected to a thunderbolt 2 host. This system works flawlessly. There's no need for any explicit support in Windows for thunderbolt 2.

Or ask a company yo build you a custom product and be prepared to pay thousands for it.

Please make a 2024 version of this video. Apple stopped selling the FireWire to thunderbolt adapter. A new solution is needed. And don't tell me to buy a used one from ebay. Tell me of a mostly unknown company that still makes such adapters, a company that is so elusive even Google search can't find it. I'm sure one exists, but i can't find it on Google.

The best comparison of these devices that I've seen anywhere. Of those two, I've ordered the Poly. The main reason being that I already have a Poly headset from work. That headset came with the USB-C version of the BT600 dongle. But that dongle is long and bulky, thus I prefer not to have it connected to the computer at all as I feel that in even the slightest accident, the dongle might break and/or damage the USB-C port. Not to mention that on one of my two desks at home, I need both the Thunderbolt and the USB-C port to run 3 external monitors. The problem with connecting the headset via Bluetooth without the dongle is that the microphone's recording quality fluctuates badly, and at times, people on the other end can't understand me at all. So what I ordered was the newer version of the Poly Sync 20+, which already comes with the USB-A version of the much smaller BT700 dongle (smaller even compared to the USB-A version of the BT600 dongle). This way, I expect to keep the dongle plugged in at all times, and I'll be able to easily switch between the headset and the speakerphone. The other reasons why I went for the Poly were the much nicer design, its capabilities as a speaker for music and video payback, the better battery life, the nicer travel bag, and the powerbank feature. I do expect them to have eliminated some of the bugs through firmware updates, but I'll only be able to tell once I receive it.

Hi friends, For the past 14 years, I have been using a Focusrite Saffire Liquid 56 paired with a mid-2011 Mac mini (FireWire Cable -> FireWire-Thunderbolt Adapter). A few days ago, I purchased a Mac mini M1, thinking I could still use this old interface via the Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C)-Thunderbolt 2 Adapter (which I do not yet have). However, I discovered by contacting Focusrite support that the interface is not compatible with the new ARM processors (or at least they have not tested it) and that the latest supported operating systems are Catalina and Windows 10 (Build 1809). At the same time, I came across videos from this channel which attest to a partial functionality of some audio interfaces with the FireWire protocol using a FireWire Cable -> FireWire-Thunderbolt Adapter -> Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C)-Thunderbolt 2 Adapter. I thought, alternatively, that I could emulate a compatible x86_x64 operating system on a UTM virtual machine in the hope that the USB signal "passes through" and operate, albeit at significantly lower speeds, on the same machine. I wondered, in case I can't get it to work with one of these methods, what the solution (or advice) might be to avoid permanently abandoning the interface. Could I use ADAT with any compatible interface? If so, would this "tutorial" be useful for me kzbin.info/www/bejne/jpWXknywmMeJmbMsi=5HIo7CTh_WPRAbvS? Do you have any other ideas? Hi Scott! Thanks for the great videos. I’m trying to transfer some footage from an old camcorder (Samsung VP-D371W) and keep running into issues. I wanted to ask for some help as I’ve now reached a stage where I’m stuck! What I’ve done so far: - Tried using an AV cable and an AV capture card. I got the camcorder to be recognised, however, I was only able to record audio and not video footage. - Now trying to use a DV cable and connect it to an old Macbook with a firewire port. When I turn on the camcorder and turn it to playback mode, then connect it to the laptop using the DV cable, the screens goes black for a second which indicates to me there is some sort of connection. However, no DV symbol appears on the screen like the manual if the camcorder says it should and the camcorder isn’t showing up on the macbook. What should I do? I’ve contemplated there being an issue with the camcorder itself but would like buying another one to be my last resort as that’s expensive. Any advice appreciated :)

Running Sonoma. I have all the adapters and the connection to my old Alesis MultiMix FW shows as working via the System Report, but it does not show up in Sound settings under Input or Output. Alesis no longer makes drivers... is there any other way to get these to show up?
