So nice to see you again! Sorry about all of the health issues. I just went through some allergic reactions with one of my children, and it was not even severe like yours, and it was not fun at all! I have a couple of questions! First, is it bad that some of my chickens don't roost at night? They 100% have enough roost space. Some just choose to sleep in a nesting box. I once had a rooster in a bachelor pad that wouldn't roost at night. I was starting to worry because we have such cold winters, I didn't want him to sleep wothout the other's body heat. We made a small little roost abouts 4 inches off the coop floor for him to practice, and he very quickly got the hang of it and started roosting up with the other guys! But like I said, I have some hens that won't roost. Second question is what else would you feed your chickens for molting/feather loss? You mentioned the mealworms. Any other treats to help with feather production? My girls are not molting yet, but I have 2 with feather loss from the rooster (said rooster has now moved pens). It ia taking sooooo looong for their feathers to come back in. Thanks Noelle!

hi, thank you so much, I am glad to be back, and so sorry to hear that one of your children is suffering from allergies, it's no fun. As for your question about roosting, the flock should be roosting on the roosts at night. If they are young, they may need to be taught that the nesting boxes are for laying rather than roosting. You can discourage this by making the nesting boxes inaccessible at night by placing a box or other large obstruction that would prevent them from roosting in the nesting box. I have had to train several of my clutches that the roost bars are where they perch at night. After a few weeks, they will change their behavior, and you can remove the obstruction from the nesting box. In addition to mealworms, you can offer dry cat food. Cat food has protein that is useful for feather regrowth. Scatter it on the ground like scratch, once the molt is complete discontinue the cat food, but you can offer meal worms year around as a healthy treat. The saddle feathers will come in during the regrowth phase of molting. Removing the rooster is a good decision as it gives the hens a break from his treading during mating. I hope this helps, if you have any more questions don't hesitate to ask. ~ Noelle ~

@@JD-dh7bk At this age their hormones are surging, as a rooster ages he does melloe out some. However, some roosters can be rough despite efforts to protect the hens backs. Not all hope is lost though, If you like your roosters and dont want to part with them you can establish a bachelor pen and seperate the roughest roosters from the hens and allow the better behaved roosters to remain with the flock. I hope this helps, I have several videos on my channel addressing bachelor pens and how to home roosters together in this manner.

Very excited to find your channel !!! I've never seen so many roosters in a flock so calm!!! It gives me hope, I can get my roosters sorted out. My 3 are brothers I've had since they hatched. And until hormones hit they were fine. They are just over a year old now and there has been 2 major bloody fights over who's head roo !!! So far I've expanded their yard quite a bit. And there are 3 feeding stations and 4 water stations. We have also built a new coop 13×10. With two 12ft roosts and 3 10ft roosts. They are all one level. All of the above to try and calm the boys down. From all the fighting and knocking each other off the ladies they all are missing lots of feathers. There has been no blood since Mid April. I have 29 hens as well. Anyway I going to watch all your stuff for more ideas on helping my boys get along.

How often do you deworm? When you have very young baby chickens and see one had worms how much would you recommend to give? I noticed worms in ones stool, 2 different stools w some blood, I have lost one bird. And I find it needs to be done, I love the natural way but the natural way as far as I know only prevents it unless done I’m assuming on a very constant maybe weekly basis
@TheKuntryKlucker
@TheKuntryKlucker 4 ай бұрын
Hi, thanks for your comment. It is extremly unlikely that your baby chicks have worms as it takes at least 9 months of exposure to the outdoors and contact with the ground to develop a parasitic load that would need addressed. In baby chicks I would be more concerned about Coccidiosis which had many of the same symptoms as worms. Wormer is dangerous to use in chicks as their bodies are so small. Medicated chick feed can help coccidipsis and prevent the condition, but of you suspect worms in baby chicks I would recommendednd that you consult a vet. sorry, I can't be of much help.

Hi, I feed my bachelor boys the same feed as the rest of the flock gets. They are not pickey. Grower feed is typically feed to chicks as it has the nuteition needed for growing. My adult bird do not like the grower feed either, I switch them to layer at around 20 weeks of age.

Actually it is known from where they come. First of all what you refer to as polish chickens and I can see in your video are 2 very different breeds. The Black ones with the white fluff on the head are a Dutch bread and are called Dutch crested. The other breed you have in your flock look a lot like Padovana and even though you can find in a lot of literature they are an Italian breed, it's not quite true. The first forms of this breed where in the whole middle Europe to find, but the Germans made the standard of what we know today as Padovana. All European crested chicken breeds we have today, have their origin in the Russian breed Pawlowskaja.

Thank you for the great info. I will do some research based on your leads and fill in my understanding of the Polish and breed histology. @@TheKuntryKlucker I got this from the Italian, German and Dutch Padovana association pages. All 3 say the same thing. Early forms of Padovanas can be found even over 300 years ago. They show up even in some paintings in Vatican, but the first standard was set in Germany, at the end of the 1800's. They are very common in Europe. The golden and silver laced are the most common. The Dutch crested, so the ones with black bodys and white crest were standardized in the Netherlands. This breed is even easier to find in Europe. The black ones with white crest are the most wide spread, but they are also quite easy to find in blue with white crest, all white and bared with white crest. The other color types are harder to find. The Padovanas and the Dutch crested are seen as 2 different breeds in Europe. They are very similar in body confirmation, but there is still a slight difference. There is quite a difference in behavior though. The European Padovanas are exactly how you described them in your video. They are flighty, easily scared and can take off to the air. They are crazy good flyers tbh. The European Dutch crested can be easily scared too, but they are not flighty. When they panic, they tend to run away for a few meters and hide. They don't really try to fly, but if they have no feathers in front of their eyes, they can fly quite good also.

@@meditatiigermana7568 Thank you for taking the time to share this information on Polish histology. Last night, I researched the keywords you mentioned and ran across some European religious artwork from the Medieval period that depicted what can be considered Polish. Seeing how our feathered friends marched with us throughout history is amazing. The Silkie is also an ancient breed originating in Asia. "A chicken with fur-like feathers" is mentioned in the travel journal of Marco Polo as he traveled Asia. The Silkies came to the Western World via trade on the Silk Road. I am enjoying learning more about one of my favorite breeds, thank you again for making this information known, this is fascinating.

@@TheKuntryKlucker Glad that I could give you new informations. It's always a pleasure to chat to a fellow chicken person :) The depictions from Medieval times where those Polish like chickens can be seen, is very interesting. It's also fascinating to see how far back the breed goes, in it's early form. The silky is one of the oldest breeds, if I'm not mistakening. I think it was mention by some other traveler, before Marco Polo I hope I'm not wrong on this one. And since you mentioned "A chicken with fur-like feathers", my sister asked me a year ago "Why do you have a white rabbit running and jumping around in the chicken yard?" I asked her what the heck she is talking about, because there are no rabbits in the yard. She said " There was a white fur ball zick zagging and jumping fast between the chickens"... I had to laugh and told her "That's Dizzy Sis, the Silky, you held her and did pet her many times already" : )))) That's a 7 years old silky hen and she is quirky like that... she sometimes hops around when she is full of joy

Thank you for taking an interest in my channel and for your comment. Roosters will compete to fight for the alpha position in a flock with multiple roosters. The trick to keeping multiple roosters is to provide enough room, resources, and hens. However, if you want to keep your boys a bachelor pen is a viable option. Roosters can live in harmony with other roosters if no hens are in the coop with them. I will do a video of bachelor pens to help chicken keepers like yourself know that there are options when dealing with multiple roosters.

Hi, yes. The non-polish roosters will try to mate with the polish hens. However, the polish roosters that look after those hens will see to it that their attempts are unsuccessful. Roosters are very protective of their hens. Any rooster that tries to mate with another rooster’s hens will usually be met with an altercation. Most roosters would rather avoid this kind of confrontation.

But every now and then they do revert back to their wild heritage and roost in trees.
