I appreciate your effort in adding an aerial view of the Seychelles' airport and its sole runway for the preamble of this episode, Andre. Makes me want to go island hopping in a small ATR 72-600 turboprop plane! ✈️🌍 HF and VHF radio are the most basic communications medium between aircraft and airport control towers. Larger, modern jet planes generally have satellite comms as a backup system. Pilots generally use the VHF Air band to communicate with the nearest airport tower control, but in the rare cases when they're out of range they would switch to HF. Fun fact: the VHF Air band may be sitting just above the FM broadcast band frequency (108 MHz), but the Air band itself is always in AM mode, never narrow band FM. The main reason for using AM is because FM transmissions have the undesirable "capture effect". If the aviation band used frequency modulation, the strongest transmission will dominate the channel and block weaker transmissions from more distant aircraft. By using amplitude modulation, pilots and ATC controllers can listen to simultaneous background transmissions from other aircraft, in case of an emergency. Amateur ham radio operators who use the VHF 2m band on the other hand, use narrowband FM and not AM. 😊

That island airport looks very inviting indeed! I read a very interesting article in the Wall Street Journal this week about GPS systems on planes being hacked, all around the world. This causes, among other things, the satellite communication systems on board to jam up. Which, in my opinion, just shows how important HF and VHF radio remains on aeroplanes. When all else fails, let's return to good old radio technology :-) Here is the article: www.wsj.com/business/airlines/electronic-warfare-spooks-airlines-pilots-and-air-safety-officials-60959bbd I wasn't a subscriber, but when I saw this article I clicked on the subscribe button and they had a special offer of $2 per month for a year. So I signed up. Been very impressed so far, it is a very good newspaper. Not as partisan as some other US media outlets, like the New York Times (on the left) or Fox News (on the right). WSJ seems to be quite centrist and objective.

I've not heard that one as far as I know. But I have heard India on HF Airband. I suspect HF is more of a backup these days rather than a primary form of communication.
@swlistening
@swlistening 4 сағат бұрын
Hi Glen, I have also heard Mumbai on 8879, it is actually the one that I seem to catch most often. I think in some cases HF is just a back-up, as you say, but I think there are still instances when airliners are in the middle of vast oceans where they still rely on HF for some of their communication needs. The messaging system used on planes, ACARS, relies on VHF, so it only works overland. And satellite communication, from what I have read on some aviation blogs, while used by most airliners, is not ubiquitous, that is why a number of airliners still use HF radio when crossing oceans.

Interesting comparison, André, but for once I beg to differ. To me, the D-368 has a vastly superior speaker but this test doesn't do justice to it by only tuning to talk radios. I do understand that having music in KZbin videos is not something you want to do, but in my opinion this biased the comparison against the D-368 that sounds the best by far when listening to FM music, and it sounds just as great when playing MP3s or when used as a Bluetooth speaker. If we're only considering talk radio and mostly on SW, then I do agree that it's more or less a tie between the D-220 and the D-368. However to me the D-219 really lacks bandwidth and produces a very tinny and somewhat muffled sound. This is the only gripe I have against this otherwise wonderful small radio.
@swlistening
@swlistening 2 күн бұрын
Hi there Alain, thanks for your comment! I think you are right, for music listening the D-368 will beat the other two here by far. I should have made it more clear in my video commentary that this test is more aimed at DXers than at music listeners. I do mention this in the video description, but I should have mentioned it in the video itself, just to make it clear what I am doing here. I am very careful not to play too much music, if any at all, on any of my radios during tests and comparisons. It is just too risky. KZbin is really strict about music copyright, so I'd rather not risk the future of my channel through copyright infringements. Anyway, it's OK, as my channel's main focus remains DXing and radios for DXing. Having said all this, most of the people who have commented here agree with your assessment of the D-368, even for voices :-) Most people seem to prefer the D-368 sound, a few like the D-219, and a few like the D-220.

Thanks André for this comparison 👍 to my liking, I think I'd prefer the D-368, with its sound being simply fuller - more bass (even though I listened on my phone, which doesn't give much bass either), and more highs on FM, albeit no significant difference between all these radios on AM in this regard. The D-219 & D-220 sounded quite tinny on FM 🙄 in fact, I couldn't spot any difference anywhere between the D-219 and D-220. Actually, with Radio Pulpit, I didn't see much of a difference between any of the three radios. Was that woman speaking over a phone? That wouldn't be the best audio source to compare radios and speakers due to its range of frequencies even further limited than most radio speakers can respond to. But in any case, the sound of all three radios is very crisp & understandable, so obviously others may have different preferences.

BTW just after your video, a KZbin recommendation suggests me a new video of a HanRongDa HRD-737, made by a popular ham radio KZbinr here in Poland. It seems to be as small as the XHDATA D-220, but it has a digital display. From what I've seen & read earlier about HanRongDa radios, they weren't particularly sensitive, so I wonder how the D-220 and the HRD-737 would compare. And throw a PL-368 to that comparison, for good measure 😅

OK, I just watched. It can only do so much with a 30cm telescopic whip on SW, but a supplied piece of clip-on wire (maybe 3m long at best) does raise signals from nil to a fairly good level. He don't try a longer wire or a full-size EFHW he uses for ham radio, so we don't know how prone that HanRongRa would be to overload. And it doesn't seem too sensitive or selective on FM, he did pick up a few stations on auto seek, but none from a very high-power site a dozen kms away 😮

The D-368 uses the higher performance Si 4836-A10 tuner DSP, which supports FM stereo and bass/treble output controls. The D-219 is fitted with the cheaper Si 4825-A10 DSP which doesn't allow for sound control. The D-220 has an unknown Chinese designed DSP, presumably copied from the Si 4825-A10. If this is so then the D-220 will roughly sound like the D-219.

@ArnieDXer Hi Arnie, thanks for your comment. I think many people seem to prefer the warm and deeper sound on the D-368, it does sound quite a bit fuller than the other two. Personally I like the crisp sound on the D-220, although not many people seem to share my liking :-) I thought that the D-220 and the D-219 sound almost 100% alike on FM, but on MW and SW the D-220 sounds a bit different to me. Still sharp and clear, but with a bit of warmth, which the D-219 lacks. I like that the D-220 is quite crisp, but a bit warm, or full. The Radio Pulpit announcer, as far as I could gather, was not speaking on the phone, it was an announcer in the studio, I think. But I might be wrong there. About the HRD-737. I have seen this radio on Ali Express many times. Ali Express always recommends it to me, as well as the HRD-757, a much bigger radio. I haven't seen many reviews about these two radios, so I really don't know much about them. I don't think I'll buy one myself, but if HRD contacts me and asks me to review them, I will gladly do so :-)

I've purchased two D-368s and two D-219s, but will pass on the D-220 due to its single and cramped shortwave band. Sensitivity isn't everything in a receiver, other factors like selectivity, speaker sound and ease of tuning also matter, at least to me. Gotta admit that XHDATA was clever in marketing the D-220 though; the company advertised it as a "fun travel radio" and also released it in three colors options. *Some trivia for the techies:* Of the three radios that are featured here, the D-368 gets the most premium, known DSP tuner chip. It sports a Skyworks Si 4836-A10 tuner which has a slightly better selectivity than the entry level, Si 4825-A10 chip that the D-219 has. In addition, the Si 4836 supports separate bass and treble controls but XHDATA sadly didn't take advantage of these audio controls for the D-368. However the D-368 does make use of the Si 4836's station tuning light and the FM Stereo indicating LED. These features are absent in the less expensive Si 4825-A10 model. In terms of FM performance, the Si 4836 is better - it also has adaptive noise suppression which blends the left and right stereo channels into a single mono channel when FM reception conditions are poor. The Si 4825's FM tuner is monaural only - which is the reason the D-219 doesn't have stereo LED indicator and plugging in earphones won't give you that stereo experience with stereo FM stations. In terms of raw audio output the Si 4825's audio voltage maxes out at 72 mV (RMS) while the Si 4836 is slightly higher at 80 mV (RMS). The new D-220 has an unmarked DSP chip but it appears to be identical to the genuine Skyworks Si 4825-A10 or a derivative of it. I hope someone positively identifies the DSP manufacturer, even if it's a Chinese copycat. 🙂 Like the D-219, the D-220's FM tuner is mono only even with earphones plugged. And yes, the D-368 also has a Bluetooth chip for using the radio as a wireless speaker and a basic MP3 player but these are added-on circuits that aren't part of the Si 4836 DSP tuner. If I were the marketing head for XHDATA, I'd repackage the D-368 it in bright colours instead of the mundane, serious looking black and have a single colour background (no stripes) for the frequency dial, like the D-219. While it's not so obvious that XHDATA replaced the original micro USB charging port with Type-C, I'm curious to know if the 2024 D-368 is fitted with surface mounted RF filters like the current D-808 has. I also wish the D-368 comes in silver/gray and green color options. 📻☺👍

Hi Henry, this is true, and it makes quite a difference. The Hammarlund sound is really smooth and clean, because there is is no internal noise.

Interesting video. I think another KZbinr has taken both radios apart, and he says they are very similar inside. If that’s the case, a tie is not surprising.

Interesting, I will try to find that video. I think they don't use exactly the same DSP chips, but, in general, I think they are very similar radios.

Hello. I am listening to Rep of Yemen on 11935 at 1230 UTC and am hearing a jamming signals the resembles a laser gun sound at high speed. Been hearing quite a lot in the mornings here in Florida.

Thanks Anthony. This noise seems to sound slightly different depending on where you are in the world. I hear more of a pulsing noise here in Johannesburg, but on web SDR's in Europe I also hear something like what you describe, kind of like a laser gun indeed.

Thank you for the report Andre 👍 Honestly I'm not sure about Mongolia. On the one hand, the demise of longwave in Europe might really hit them so hard, receivers would be less available, so less people could potentially be able to benefit from their service. Perhaps even less than with shortwave. On the other hand, digital shortwave? Really? I can't see that. And even if they choose to have analogue-only broadcasts on SW, they would quickly cut them to daytime-only, and later scrap them silently. Like with Ethiopia on 7110, I think it reactivated a few years ago, quickly decided to sign-off sometime early, and now I don't know if they're even active. Heck, the BBC is now following a similar tactique to Africa! Probably more likely to work hard on placing a plethora of cellphone masts, even wherever there are no people in the area at the moment, and encourage people to download Mongolian Radio app 😂 BTW Mongolia used to broadcast their domestic services on SW too. Last used frequency was 7260 kHz, carrying 3rd programme, unfortunately always clashing with Xinjiang PBS. Previously they had 4895, and earlier I think also 4830 kHz for 1st programme, the one that's currently on LW. I haven't been on SW nor MW this past week, focusing almost entirely on FM broadcast monitoring here in Poland partially suffering from floods, but on Wednesday night I did check Radio Exterior de Espana on a remote SDR in hope they'd be carrying Champions League, on the 1st week of the new season. Like, you know, they always did. Guess what -- they didn't! 😱 Domestic RNE on MW carried that Girona vs PSG match just fine. Really hope it's not a permanent change 🙁

Maybe you should try the radio academy, you never know how it could go! It might also be nice for you to try the XHDATA tour too and hope for the best if you have another passport! I have a British and Turkish one so far. Emirler is pronounced differently, with more emphasis on the I and a sort of sh noise on the r, I can’t quite describe it, you would have to listen to the pronunciation on Google Translate.

I'll definitely try for the radio academy next year, it sounds like fun and like I could learn a whole lot there! Thanks for the tip about the Emirler pronunciation. I can manage Spanish and German and a few others, but Turkish is not a language that I know at all.

@@StratmanII Maybe I should just clarify that with "manage" I mean I can understand some German and say a few words, but I'm certainly not fluent. I speak a fair bit of Spanish, and I can understand some Portuguese. And Dutch, of course, because of its similarity to Afrikaans.

Hi Tim, I agree! I'm not in the US, of course, but if such a big and important country continues to support AM, it is good news for AM (MW) radio in general.

@@swlistening Japan hasn't given up on its AM stations either. It was through your channel that I first learned that Japan still has many medium wave stations. DRM for Japan, anyone? DReaM on... 😀 My trip to Tokyo last year with my Tecsun PL-368 proved that they still have AM stations! 🙂

@@StratmanII That's good to hear! I think sometimes we talk about MW going downhill in places like Europe and we forget about places where it is still strong. The US, of course, Japan, as you say now. Also still very strong in Argentina and Brazil, Mozambique, Botswana, China, India, many Middle Eastern countries and a whole bunch of others. A look through the wonderful MWList website just shows how many countries still use MW.

@@swlistening I am all for the improvement and betterment of wireless broadcasting, bru. With many countries being highly resistant to change from analogue radio broadcasting and the gross unavailability of cheap-and-cheerful DRM receivers, how is DRM going to present its case? One has a much better luck buying a radio with FM and DAB+ reception, compared to DRM.
