HI Jerry. My uphill grind on going digital currently is that less-featured version of Concepts that they offer for Android/Windows compared to the full features provided to iOS. I'm not really a Mac person, or are our offices. It's a bit frustrating that some sort of gatekeeping is happening here. So I am at a crossroads: (1) switch to iOS; (2) look for another sketch app like Sketchable; (3) just stick it out with Photoshop and its complexity. If you have a sway on the Concepts developing team, please urge them to aid the demographic working on Windows/Android.

Sorry for that! Are you watching on mobile? When I made this first one, I wasn't really planning on uploading to YT so it was formatted with the instagram dimensions in mind. If you look under the 2 minute tuts playlist, there's an updated version of this that should work better for you! The brush for the shadows at the end is the brush pen and I upped the pressure sensitivity on it a bit. Hope this helps!

How you go from inventory to base map digitally? Are you using google earth and field verifying? Drones? Up to autocad base then dropping into concept ?
@landshaperstudio
@landshaperstudio Ай бұрын
Yes to all the above actually! It varies as we are an outsourcing option for our clients so we use whatever they give us. Sometimes that’s on-site measurents we then draw out, sometimes it’s a drone or Polycam scan, or a traditional survey. Occasionally we have to just use google earth but the perspective skew makes it pretty unreliable.

@mptprojetos6966 this is one of the biggest reasons I switched to iPad. It’s unfortunate because android tablets and pc setups have grown leaps and bounds! What's the use case for using morpholio trace vs the concepts app for landscape/garden design? Thanks in advance. Appreciate your content!
@landshaperstudio
@landshaperstudio 5 ай бұрын
Hi Nymode! For me it’s less about what you’re drawing and more about your style and working deadlines. The main difference between these two apps is Morpholio is a pixel painter and Concepts is vector based. Since we work for other designers we are constantly up for critiques and tight deadlines, so vector based selections and changes are much quicker and easier and although we lose some of the abilities you get with pixel based editing, it’s much faster for us. At the end of the day, both are really good apps that you can utilize for pretty much any application you put the time into.

can these drawings be opened on AutoCAD cause last time I opened it on their bunch of wiggly lines were coming up instead of an actual drawing
@landshaperstudio
@landshaperstudio 7 ай бұрын
Yes. Couple things to keep in mind though: When you draw in concepts app, you are drawing from point to point with a line of information in between to dictate what that stroke looks like. That's why we can change a pen stroke to a marker stroke in concepts. It's all just a series a points with info between each point telling the program what tool we use and what that should look like. However, when you export the .dwg to a program like Autocad, autocad is only reading the lines. So if you used a watercolor brush for instance, CAD doesn't detect that information. Instead, it only sees a line between two points. In autocad, you can take that line and change the line type and style, but the perameters you set within concepts app won't carry over. Make sense?

Hi, great tips. I'm a garden designer and use Sketchup Pro and Concepts in combination and I never knew you could do this! So does it have to be the basic fixed-width pen or can you use the fountain pen with a bit more character for example Thanks
@landshaperstudio

Hey Jo! It’s whatever fits your style! I typically use the “pen black” style in SketchUp with detail turned all the way up, or I used “Construction Style” with extensions set to 4. Didn't have to wait for my windows system to boot up :) and those wonderful 30 min. sporadic updates! haha. The switch to vector was also huge. While it does have some limitations, it's just been much more fluid and fast for turnarounds and popping in and out of difference scales. We only work for other designers and its usually on a tight deadline so the ability to easily isolate, select and switch scales has been huge for our workflow. Thanks for the love!

Awesome work! This a dying art from within landscape architecture a whole. If more students and architects resorted to hand drawn conceptual work like this we would be moving toward a more creative and expressive future. Having been in the profession for 30 years there's a stronger connection to creativity when you co ordinate thought with hand-eye co ordination of hand sketching rather than the cut copy paste and concept development in a CAD platform. I've seen creativity levels drop significantly over the years as hand sketching fades into the background.

Luckily almost all of my professors pursued some sort of traditional art on the side and so were big on traditional methods and being able to express our ideas quickly and effectively. LA, from what I see, has grown into something much more broad than it was in the past. For better or worst, is everyone's personal opinion, but the industry has grown to wear multiple hats. And many of those hats aren't very "design" oriented in the way of art but more purely function. As LA's grab more at civil engineering type projects and planning, I see alot more info-based / use-model design happening in the commercial spaces and the only ones that seem to be truly artful are the big competition based firms. I know thats painting with a broad and probably unfair brush, but that's just what I've seen. Seems less about hey, how can we collaborate with other professions and make what they need into an artful marriage of form and function...and more about: Grading? Planning? Survey? Structural? Yeh we can do that too. Lol. I think what we are seeing more is a shift in the profession as a whole and less about the graphics. Heck, the graphics alone now are pretty much it's own profession. Atleast that's what my company does :)

Thanks! And it depends. Some design/build firms that we’ve drawn for just need a simple sketch since they have a good idea of what they want to do whereas some need detailed drafting. However, usually it’s not the contractors that dictate the final deliverables. It’s the city (permitting) and the homeowner. This was a concept sketch (1of2) that was presented to this client. Then 3d, and lastly a submital set for project permitting.

Love the videos and would love to see more of your layering process, what your traditional education taught you about layouts, plant selections and linework and then the thing that gets me is your stuff is gorgeous and mine looks like dog shit comparatively.
