The movie Whiplash actually has a similar message to this. Its director's intent was for it to be a cautionary tale, subtly showing why one shouldn't be motivated by perfection.

The magical mystery tour is the strangest album by the Beatles according to John I Am the Walrus is a silly psychedelic tune with lyrics that make no sense

it’s like you read my mind! i’ve been thinking about this topic for days, as i recently began reading “in his own write”. his writing style is nonsensical and strange. i love how he can use so many words to say what is essentially nothing at all. i’ve been trying to make nonsensical art pieces inspired by john’s work and as it turns out, creating nonsense is a lot harder than it looks.

This is honestly what sets the Beatles apart from a lot of other bands and artists. John Lennon can make a song with absolutely insane lyrics and no actual meaning and still make it a great song that is listenable to all. I mean just look at early Pink Floyd. They were arguably more psychedelic and “out there” than the Beatles, yet most of their early albums are terrible. You can’t tell me with a straight face that you think the songs on Piper At The Gates of Dawn and Umaguma are better than anything on Sgt Pepper’s and Magical Mystery Tour. The Beatles were able to push the boundaries of music while still making amazing songs that are actually easy to listen to.

It’s always hilarious that John made I Am The Walrus and Glass Onion to make fun of the conspiracy theorists reading too deep into their songs, and yet they somehow still believed that these songs were hinting at Paul’s death. You’ll still find these nut jobs today who believe that “the walrus was Paul” means that Paul died. Some people are just too stupid for their own good. 🤡

"I am the egg man" is a Lewis Carroll reference too. While Lewis Carrol didn't invent Humpty Dumpty, the character appears in Through the Looking Glass. Given that the "egg man" line comes right before the walrus line, it's pretty clear that Lennon is thinking of the Lewis Carroll version. Lennon also references his own music in the line "See how they fly like Lucy in the sky."

I've heard Joe in interviews pronounce his own name as "Satri-Annie" so this guy's not wrong. Also, i personally think Alex Skolnick is a better thrash guitarist than Kirk, but Kirk is still incredible. Sure, Kirk goes back to the same scales and techniques over and over, but almost every guitarist does: generally speaking, any number of your favorite guitarists have their own given habits, like Joe Satriani has masterful legato that he incorporates into almost every song, Steve Vai mastered whammy bar techniques that he incorporates into any song possible, even a modern and inhuman guitar player Guthrie Govan has his own habits with his trademark chromatic lines that give an impression of more a saxaphonist than a guitarist. With these examples in mind, Kirk's habits tend to be those of his heroes, with lots of double stop bends and pentatonics that you would hear in solos back in the 70s when rock music really came into its own. It really is an inventive thing that allows Metallica to stand out in the thrash scene as every other thrash guitarist was trying to reinvent to make a sound of their own, Kirk simply took what was perfect about 70s playing and integrated it into the thrash circle perfectly. Now keep in mind, I ain't a Metallica meat rider, in fact i don't listen to them regularly at all, but i can appreciate Kirk as a player, and that i can assure you he doesn't suck. At any point in Metallica's sound that it could be considered bad, its almost certainly never Kirk's doing, its usually either James or Lars.

Lennon was just entering another musical prime when he was murdered. The whole Double Fantasy album is sublime, and songs like Borrowed Time show that he was experimenting with a reggae sound. Still a huge loss.

I am the walrus is about the death of Brian Epstein. I'm crying is the most repeated phrase. John felt like the walrus (the bad guy) because he felt guilty about Brian's suicide. There's no way John forgot the walrus was the bad guy when in an interview he said he read the book at least once a year. At the end of the song the death scene from King Lear is heard. "Sit ye down father". "Oh untimely death". Brian was a father figure to John. Sitting on a cornflake means he's making a cornflake last a long time (similar to nursing a pint) waiting for the van ie the van for the mental asylum. So he's sat, depressed, not eating, slowly going insane. But Maharishi told him to be happy so he's been a naughty boy, he's let his face grow long. I am he...etc is also taken from what Maharishi told him when Brian died. He links the death with that of his mother via his childhood - yellow matter custard etc. First his mother died and now Brian, the father figure has died. Throw in some genuine nonsense to throw people off because working class northern men in the 60s didn't show their emotions.

IMO The 'walrus' is meant to represent the person in the band who the media and their record label were pushing to be the lead man of the band. First it was John, and then McCartney.

I had John's book of poems "In His Own Write' and found it to be not only whimsical but obviously self serving. He writes what he likes because he can. His humour is dark and also very light. I'm sure the Jabberwocky was something he could very much identify with. I found great joy in the book as a teen.

I love the Beatles. Seriously. But the only thing I don't like about them is nonsense lyrics. Instead, check out Don McLean. Nearly all of his lyrics mean something deep. Think about it: if you are going to have a million people hear your song, don't you want to say something? What would you say to the world, if you could say something? Wouldn't you give the world some sweet advice? Peace and Love! :)

This video explains a lot of things very well, and taken together, it also adds up to what I think is a very good explanation of why Frank Zappa liked it. Even covered it one time. Ike Willis is singing, and his voice fits it to a T.

This song, IMO, was unmistakably about how much Lennon hated being famous, while being expected to be grateful for his fame. Whether he was conscious of this message or not. When I listen to it, I see references to fans, groupies, police holding back crowds, miserable bus tours, the depersonilization of being an idol, etc.

"I am he as you are as you are me and we are all together" It reminds of African philosophy Ubuntu, which says "I am because we are". Maybe this association has nothing to do with it, but I remembered it. Even more so because today's Western industrial culture preaches such an individualistic way of being.

I mean, "Glass Onion" isn't even particularly obscure about its trolling. It's jam-packed with references to other Beatles songs. And the metaphor of a glass onion is suggests that people are trying to pull back the layers on something that's actually transparent.
