The YB,-60 simply was a unique airplane. Convair was teetering with the XB-36 "Peacemaker" fuselage, but modified it with large "swept back" wings and the tail plane assembly. It was to be powered by eight P&W J-57 turbojet engines, pairs of two underwing just like the B-52. Boeing was already developing the B-52 "Stratofortress" to replace the existing B-47s. Only two YB-60s were ever built. One of the two was used for flight testing while the other airplane was for ground testing. I must say, this was a quite an impressive design that did not succeed, unlike the B-52, which was mass-produced and excelled all the way to this very present day.

About a dozen A4s still flying but the rest, long gone, indeed some of these didn't even get to get Tri-Service Designations. But oh my, can you smell the future? Just think, 10 yrs earlier these carriers had F6Fs F4Us TBDs etc.

There was no A-4D Skyray. When he says it, it is showing a Skyhawk. This guy keeps mixing up the two different planes, the A-4D Skyhawk and the F-4D Skyray, showing videos of each randomly alternating. Again, they were two DIFFERENT planes.

I think the second Phantom II prototype still exists. It's marked 142260. It's the F-4 airframe that set the ultimate speed record for the type in 1960. It flew over 1700mph, or about Mach 2.62 It's supposed to be part of the San Diego Air & Space Museum collection. It's in storage waiting to be restored for display. I imagine that plane has NOT been worked on for over 40 years now! It's in the island annex location, not the main SDASM building in Balboa Park. The original Phantom II prototype was destroyed during a test flight in 1959. The A-models (45 built) and the second prototype were retired by the mid-1960s. They were never going to be deployed as frontline planes and they were surplus to requirements. They had so many B-models in service and the Navy started receiving J-models by 1968(?).

The Navy could only land the Phantoms on a carrier so many times due to structural fatigue, then they gave them to the Marines.

The "Gutless" didn't get the engines it needed, but it did ultimately influenced the plan form of the wonderful F/A-18. Likewise, the Demon and the Phantom. I knew two guys who'd flown Demons before they got F-8 Crusaders. As much as the F-8 was an "adventure" to trap at 150+ kts, they preferred it by far to the F3H. I knew several others who'd flown the Ford and loved it. Ed H. =knew= airframes.

July 13, 2020----Thanks for the video. I'm sure many have heard/seen photos of Germany's Luftwaffe '46 aircraft. Let's say the over heating problem and getting a higher speed were solved. This would make a counter point, calling it a Army Air Force '46 scenario.

The F4D and the F8U used the same engine. The F4D Skyray was built for one purpose: to launch off a carrier deck and get to altitude quickly to intercept a Soviet bomber. It did this and still holds records. It was the only Navy aircraft that could climb vertically while accelerating. It was retired because the Navy could no longer afford single mission aircraft. The F4D and the A4 were both designed by the Douglas genius, Ed Heinemann.

June 21, 2020---Thanks for the video, but wondering about modelers and 3D printing. I know there was a vaccuform kit of this aircraft made MANY years ago. Then at least 5 years ago on a modeling website, saw a guy who 3D printed a 1/32 scale V-1. Yeah, everyone not only oohed and awed, but wanted to know how much he'd charge to print them one. When I saw it, I knew 3D printing would have a major impact for a lot of modelers. Imagine someone 3D printing this aircraft in 1/72nd scale, but with EVERYTHING as part of the printing. Separate canopy, interior, etc. I'm 67 and TRYING to learn 3D CAD and to those saying it's easy to learn, they're LYING!
