I read so many airplane magazine how this one escaped me! I am so thrilled to see an FW 190 in the air again! I bet the test pilot loves to add this to his log book! Thanks for posting this video. Now I know what a FW engine sounds like! :-)

This would bring tears to my father's ( RIP 1997 ) eyes. He was a Focke-Wulf engineer. He told me everytime Gen Galland would visit the office, he always took a 190 for a spin. G's favorite mount was the Dora model. Galland liked to perform airshows for the engineers and his favorite maneuver was a high speed pass, upside down followed by a split s with a flare out and gear deployment at touch down height. My father said he was an " engel " pilot

I just love seeing old warbirds brought back to life, moreover the people that restore these aircraft are keeping history alive for future generations.

Fantastic - the 'Butcher Bird' has a real air of menace about it in flight - Good job!

There are a couple of airworthy restorations that are using the original BMW. But those engines are extremely rare to find for an airworthy rebuild. Twenty years ago, the first DB605 engines were coming back to life, so now the BMWs will have a chance to be heard again.
@FiveCentsPlease16 жыл бұрын
Flugwerk originally built 12 new Fw-190 airframes. This production number has since been increased to 20 aircraft. None have begun flying in airshows and their buyers are still doing final assembly. One finished example is in the UK awaiting paperwork and approval from the CAA before flight testing.

Thanks...actually I found that site you mentioned. I sent them an e-mail through the site, but no response yet. I am finishing up my Private Pilot soon and I would love to get a LOA to fly a high performance warbird. They are crazy money [as you know] to own vintage wise. I also love the Fw 190. It would be something to own/fly even a new replica. I think I could swing one of these LOL. Maybe...Thank You for responding.

@camrober It's an early test flight, like the video title says. The gear is one less thing to worry about if something else goes wrong. Also during the project they needed to do some redesign work on the emergency release for the gear, so perhaps they were leaving it down and locked.

Sounds like a Shvetsov ASh-82, which I believe many modern Fw190 replicas are powered by. It also powered most of the fighters they faced during the war, like the La-5 and La-7.
@49317500115 жыл бұрын
According to wikipedia, the ASh-82FN has it's takeoff power rated at 1650 HP and the BMW 801D at 1677 HP, so the power output is pretty much the same.

The first batch of aircraft do feature original, refurbished wartime tail wheel assemblies that were discovered in storage--perhaps to give the aircraft some heritage. And I'm assuming there may be some original components in the cockpit or instruments.
@FiveCentsPlease14 жыл бұрын
@niflap Yes, this test flight was years ago. This is one of 20 replica Fw190s and several are already flying with buyers. 2 or 3 examples have been converted to Fw190D-9 standard but none are flying yet. (One was fitted with an Allison V12 but never flew.) Now the D-9s are awaiting rebuilds of the correct Jumo 213 engines, which will take some time to complete.

I love the throaty sound of the BMW 801. Best radial engine in any WW2 fighter.
@FiveCentsPlease14 жыл бұрын
@GR8TM4N Original engines are extremely rare, then you have the added costs of rebuilding it, finding or making any missing parts and getting enough spare parts to keep it running. And maybe locating a second engine to use as a spare also. Replacing the engine was primarily a cost decision. A couple of originals will be in the air soon, but there will be a learning phase since they haven't been operated in the air since the end of the war.

Shame that more didnt survive as of all the German aircraft!
@FiveCentsPlease13 жыл бұрын
@pervertt It's not a BMW 801. These replicas were built with different engines. Only one BMW is currently flying and its sound is more quiet, but still impressive.

I knew Europeans that when hearing this noise they sat down in a corner with both their arms over their head. These people were kids by that time but the trauma remain with them all along their lives. For me that BMW makes music!
@rockithoney14 жыл бұрын
@FiveCentsPlease that will be definitely a blast. You will post videos of those, too? I am not an engine freak, but I had a different radial sound of original fw190 movies in mind.
@jetaddicted14 жыл бұрын
@dwb345 it is an almost exact replica:the engine being different,it's covering differs a little.plus the landing gear panels seem to be missing the wheel part. i would anyways give a years salary to be given the oppportunity to fly this beaut

@audimanpov Where have you heard a BMW 801 running? A static display engine? The last BMW engine runs for an aircraft may have been in the 1970s or early 80s when the RAF Hendon Fw190 was started. It has not been run since. At any rate, it will probably sound similar to this 14-cylinder engine (as does the R-2600 from the B-25.)

the line going down gradually from top of the cabin to the tail, which makes the body disminish thinner, compared with messerchmit's heavy back, that's the reason i prefer fw-190 to messerschmit's ! :)

Let's assume that after all of the engineering, financial investment, and over 10 years in the making, FlugWerk would not bet their reputation and flagship product (this Fw190) on a "crappy" engine. This engine was chosen because it's plentiful in supply terms and has a similar weight and power output as the original BMW.
@FiveCentsPlease14 жыл бұрын
@rockithoney It's not. This is the prototype of eventually 20 new-build Fw190s using a Russian/Chinese ASh-82 14-cylinder radial. It's a very close match in size and power output as the original BMW, which are extremely rare. This was a German project to create a more affordable high-performance warbird for buyers (easier to insure and easier to service.) Also, two original WWII Fw190s are nearing the end of complete restorations and will fly with original BMWs soon.

It is illegal to display a swastika in some European countries, including Germany (museum displays may be excluded.) This is a test flight of a new-build aircraft in Germany, so no swastika.

@dna1101 China advanced ? So, you're telling me they can build a 14 cylinder radial engine that's almost as good as the real thing but the tacky Nokia N95 Chinese copies for sale on Fleabay never work properly !
@rudi188915 жыл бұрын
Which engine was used? BMW? Junkers? The swastika does not have a good conotation, but every Germaan plane had one in WW II. To not have one on the FW is silly.

it's not racism, just go to a fly-in and listen to some old p-47's or corsairs. Even an old beaver sounds better. And if you look at some old wwii vids of the FW-190 it's very different too.

theres a new chinese radial engine in it . not the original build engine.

OMG, that is the worst sounding airplane i've ever heard, rudi1889 it really does sound like the kind of engine the Chinese would build. Why the hell would they stoop so low as to use that in this rebuilt plane?
@dvdk8715 жыл бұрын
do you have ears? You can't honestly tell me this engine sounds nice. It's a poorly built substitute for the authentic german engine. This has nothing to do with who built the engine, this has everything wiith the final result. And in case you are not aware, the chinese do have a reputation for poor build quality. This is a prime example, find WWII videos of airplanes, they sound a heck of a lot better and they were built over 50 years ago, guess the chinese have yet to match their skill.
@pervertt13 жыл бұрын
@FiveCentsPlease Argh, you're right. Thanks for pointing it out. I didn't read the better informed comments first. Too good to be true, I thought I was hearing a 801.
